What swept through South Lake Tahoe this past winter (as reported on South Tahoe Now) has morphed into an ice bucket challenge, this time as a fundraiser for ALS. KOLO-TV anchor Sarah Johns and Reno City Councilwoman/candidate for Mayor Hillary Schieve challenged Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval who accepted and has now challenged Nevada's two Senators, Harry Reid and Dean Heller.

Douglas County Sheriff Ron Pierini Appointed to State Post

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval appointed Douglas County Sheriff Ron Pierini as chairman of the Nevada Commission of Police Officers' Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) on On Tuesday, May 13, 2014.

Sheriff Pierini has been on the Commission since 2002 and the Chairman since 2006 after being appointed by three Governors, Kenny Guinn, Jim Gibbons and Brian Sandoval.

According to a press releases, selection to the non-compensated Board of Commissioners is based largely upon the appointee's commitment to professionalism and excellence within the law enforcement field.

Motorcyclist Safety Encouraged in Nevada

Fifty-three motorcyclists died on Nevada roadways in 2013, surpassing the previous year’s number of fatalities by 39 percent, according to the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety (OTS).

They raised more than $300,000 for the organization and four Signature Projects around the Lake. Nevada Gov. Sandoval declares 'State of Emergency' citing extreme cold in Silver State

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval declared a state of emergency Tuesday, citing extreme winter conditions in the Silver and prolonged periods of freezing temperatures that have increased the demand for propane in the Nevada.

Nevada Governor Sandoval Asks For Assessment Of School Security

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval today said he wants an assessment of how Nevada’s public schools are doing in regards to security following the horrific shooting deaths a week ago at a Connecticut elementary school.
Sandoval made the request as chairman of the state Homeland Security Commission, which met today by teleconference. A presentation will be prepared for the next meeting of the commission.

Nevada governor appoints Lake Tahoe ski industry stalwart John Wagnon to Tourism Commission

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval on Tuesday appointed John Wagnon of Vail Resorts and Herb Santos, Jr. to the Nevada Commission on Tourism. Wagnon, a 40-year veteran of the snowsports industry, is senior director of brand marketing for Vail Resorts, Inc at Heavenly Mountain Resort south shore Lake Tahoe and Kirkwood Mountain Resort.

He has served on the on the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, Ski Lake Tahoe and the California Travel Industry Association boards. Wagnon is also a trustee and past chairman of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Board.

Nevada Posts 26th Consecutive Taxable Sales Increase In August

CARSON CITY – Nevada recorded its 26th consecutive month of taxable sales increases in August, when consumers spent $3.7 billion on goods and services for a 7.6 percent jump over August 2011, the state Department of Taxation reported today.
The last decrease in statewide taxable sales came in June 2010, when a 0.3 percent decline was reported over June 2009.
Taxable sales grew by 8.1 percent in Clark County and jumped double-digits in Washoe County to 10.5 percent.

CARSON CITY – A legislative panel today quickly approved budget changes sought by a state agency so it can finalize a $3 million contract with an out-of-state firm to spearhead tourism efforts in Nevada.
Burson-Marsteller, with offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco, was the unanimous selection of an evaluation committee made up of Nevada tourism professionals. The company will be working with Red Rock Strategies of Las Vegas.

Board Rejects Proposal To Seek State Funding To Subsidize Nevada’s Health Insurance Exchange

CARSON CITY – A board overseeing the creation of the state’s health insurance exchange opted today not to seek general fund support to subsidize the fees charged to participants in the program.
The Finance and Sustainability Advisory Subcommittee of the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange Board had proposed subsidizing the monthly fee paid by enrollees with a general fund appropriation from the state Insurance Premium Tax.
