Kirkwood opens 40th season with four feet of snow

Kirkwood Mountain Resort opened its 40th anniversary season when the lifts began turning at 9 a.m. Friday, five days earlier than its originally-scheduled opening day. Kirkwood opened with one chairlift and five trails, accessing 40 total acres.
“The last two storms that have rolled through the Sierra have dropped a combined four feet of snow at Kirkwood, allowing us to open early for all our passionate skiers and riders,” said Casey Blann, general manager of Kirkwood. “This will be a great start to the 40th anniversary season at Kirkwood, and the first with Vail Resorts.”

Heavenly at Lake Tahoe celebrates with early opening

Lifts began turning at Heavenly Mountain Resort at 9 a.m. Wednesday, signaling the return of winter to Lake Tahoe and the region's ski and snowboard destination. Early-season storms combined with the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system have given Heavenly the ability to stage its earliest opening since 2004-05. All access to the mountain at this time is through the Heavenly Gondola and Tamarack Express.

Upper Kingsbury Grade prescribed burning set for Thursday

A prescribed fire is planned for upper Kingsbury Grade near North Benjamin Drive at Lake Tahoe South Shore Thursday, Nov. 15.
U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews will burn around a quarter acre, conditions permitting. Across the lake, prescribed burning is also slated for the Bunker Road area near Tahoe City. Both operations are scheduled to last through the day.

Former El Dorado Hills man arraigned for mail fraud, money laundering charges

Gregory J. Chmielewski, 43, formerly of El Dorado Hills, is scheduled to be arraigned today for 24-counts of mail fraud and money laundering, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced. The indictment, from February 17, 2011, was sealed until Chmielewski’s arrest in Arizona on October 24, 2012.

More snow for Lake Tahoe Basin on the way this weekend

More snow is on the way for Lake Tahoe, securing ski resorts preparing for the long Thanksgiving weekend.
The first of two low pressure systems will bring some snow to the Sierra beginning late Thursday night into Friday. The second and wetter system should arrive late Saturday night or Sunday with periods of heavy snow possible for the Lake Tahoe Basin, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Models have been mixed and the weather service hasn't suggested snow amounts from these storms.

Yesterday (Monday, Nov. 12), they ate their 'Last Supper.’ Today, they were introduced to some green tree limbs, supplied to LTWC by Ed Cook of Ed Cook’s Tree Service in South Lake Tahoe. Holiday tree permits go on sale in the Lake Tahoe Basin

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin the sale of holiday tree permits the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, Nov. 23. Permits cost $10 each (cash or check only, no credit cards) with a limit of two permits per family. Permit holders may choose from a variety of pine, fir or cedar in designated cutting areas and must abide by specific permit conditions for proper and responsible collection. Harvesting smaller diameter trees offers residents and visitors a traditional holiday experience while helping to thin the forest.

After attending the State of the South Shore Economy Public Forum held on October 23rd, 2012 I was inspired to draft a response to the questions about economic revitalization that were asked at the meeting. I feel like our group had many salient ideas that were not properly represented. Also, I have noticed that people are quick to offer ideas like “reduce unemployment”, “beautify the city”, and “improve recreation”, but they are typically unable to offer suggestions on how to make those ideas a reality.

Cold weather, wind and snow is on the way, Lake Tahoe. A winter storm is expected later this week that will bring strong winds, much colder temperatures and 5 to 10 inches of snow to the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Sierra and possibly 2 to 5 inches on the valley floors of Western Nevada. A strong cold front will push through the region Thursday dropping temperatures 15 to 20 degrees below normal by Friday through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. The Lake Tahoe basin can expect seasonably warm weather through midweek with changes ahead that may bring snow down to lake level and the valley floors before the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
A cold front is forecast to bring gusty winds Thursday with showers spreading into the Sierra, Lake Tahoe Basin and western Nevada. Showers and much colder conditions will then spread over all the area Thursday night through Saturday with snow levels falling to all valley floors.

Lake Tahoe prescribed fire operations continue Thursday at South Shore

Prescribed fire operations in the Spring Creek area near the south end of Lake Tahoe will begin Thursday, Nov. 1. The Forest Service says crews expect to burn three acres Thursday and three acres on Friday, conditions permitting.
Residents and visitors can expect to see smoke from this prescribed fire project area.

The Forest Service strives to minimize the impacts of smoke on local communities. Smoke-sensitive residents should consider staying indoors and keeping doors, windows and outside vents closed. To directly receive prescribed fire updates, send an email to pa_ltbmu@fs.fed.us.

Gusty winds and low humidity ahead of a low pressure system has prompted the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a Fire Weather Watch for Wednesday that includes the western Sierra front. El Dorado County Search and Rescue deployed to 11 calls throughout Lake Tahoe and Sierra

It has been a very busy week for the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Unit. Numerous backcountry visitors were caught off guard with the arrival of this weekend’s inclement weather.
Approximately 60 SAR volunteers along with four Sheriff’s deputies responded to 11 different deployments between Friday and Wednesday. Nine of the SAR events were within the borders of El Dorado County while two were in Alpine County.
