World class fishing at Lake Tahoe will be featured this month in a two-part series August 16 and again on August 18, hosted by the Tahoe Center for Environmental Science.
The Lake Tahoe Basin has numerous opportunities for fly fishing, but also has a limited season. Join local fishing expert Victor Babbitt to learn about how, where and when to fish in and around Lake Tahoe at a presentation on August 16 at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences building in Incline Village, 291 Country Club Drive.

Natural forces and human actions have affected the lake's clarity, physics, chemistry and biology since 1968, when UC Davis first began continuous monitoring of Lake Tahoe.
Despite an extreme weather year, overall clarity at Lake Tahoe improved in 2011. Yet underlying trends portray a more complex picture of the Lake Tahoe ecosystem, according to the annual “Tahoe: State of the Lake Report 2012,” released today by the Tahoe Environmental Research Center at the University of California, Davis.

A little more than a year ago the El Dorado County Library added a new digital library service to its collection. With this service library patrons have access to thousands of books that are available for download 24/7. In the past year El Dorado County patrons have downloaded over 8600 books using this service. And it is completely free.

Fishing spots in the Sierra, Lake Tahoe, Northern California and Nevada will be the place to be this week as temperatures will send thousands of anglers to dozens of rivers, lakes and streams in the region. UPDATE 10:57 AM: South Lake Tahoe Fire Department issued the following press release regarding Monday night's gas leak, which was reportedly caused by a backhoe that severed a natural gas line. The Lake Tahoe Federal Advisory Committee (LTFAC) is scheduled to meet from 9 a.m. to noon, August 9, 2012, at the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe, Calif., 96150. LTFAC will address issues related to federal activities at Lake Tahoe.
Items on the agenda include an update on Lake Tahoe Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act projects, a presentation from the Sugar Pine Foundation, and public comment. Members of the public interested in finding out more about the LTFAC are welcome to attend the meeting.

10:13PM: Smoke moved into the Lake Tahoe Basin on Sunday night as a result of Sunday afternoon fires sparked by lightning in Douglas County which have reportedly burned about 1,000 acres in the Pine Nut mountains east of Gardnerville. Fire crews are still working the scene, which was said to be growing at a moderate rate. Thunderstorms rattled much of western Nevada Sunday afternoon. Some scattered showers could happen in the Lake Tahoe Basin tonight, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. A Red Flag warning for high winds is in effect for the mountains east of the Lake Tahoe Basin until 5 a.m. Monday morning.

Intense and deeply destructive "super fires," like Colorado's current Waldo Canyon fire, which has claimed two lives and burned 350 homes, are almost assured in Northern California's future, according to a U.S. Forest Service scientist.
"Typically we're seeing an earlier fire season and that fire season is lasting longer," said Malcolm North, plant ecologist with the Pacific Southwest Research Station of the U.S. Forest Service. North works out of the station's Davis office.

Douglas Boyle is Nevada's new state climatologist. He will oversee operations of the Nevada State Climate Office, a public-service department in the College of Science at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Neighbors in Al Tahoe participated in a volunteer clean-up effort Saturday as an outcome of their most recent neighborhood meeting. Gerry and Jill Carter were the first to arrive and started collecting trash and debris at Regan Beach.
A local neighbor who was unable to tackle years of mounting debris from previous tenants was the recipient of a group volunteer effort. With the help of a volunteer with a trailer, the group was able to remove an old sofa, dilapidated shed remnants and an assortment of materials which were hauled off the property and created a dramatic improvement.
