Lake Tahoe "Fresh Tracks" 5K Snowshoe Walk and Race raising funds for breast cancer research

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you have never experienced snowshoeing, this is your chance! If you can walk, you can snowshoe! You don't have to race, just have fun during the annual Eric Nageotte Memorial "Fresh Tracks" 5K Snowshoe Walk and Race on Sunday, February 23, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. at beautiful Historic Camp Richardson Resort. This event is being sponsored by the Tahoe Mountain Milers Running Club.

Sign up by Feb. 8 to save $10 off over race day registration, and be sure to reserve a pair of snowshoes if you need them or bring your own. First time walkers are encouraged.

'Breakfast for Dinner' fundraiser for Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation

The Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation is holding their first "Breakfast For Dinner" on Tuesday, December 4 at Ernie's in South Lake Tahoe from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Come in your pajamas and enjoy while raising money for local schools and students.

"Dinner" includes Ernie's famous French toast with bacon or sausage and a beverage. A full order is $10 and a half order is just $5. There will also be hot chocolate and a mimosa bar available for an additional donation, so be sure to bring cash.

"It was a sign that I need to retire," said Dr. Kelly Shanahan.

Shanahan sat down with me recently, to reflect on her 22 years in South Lake Tahoe, and the almost 10,000 babies she's delivered in her career.

The sign?

Without putting her office up for sale she received a phone call from a local realtor, asking if she'd like to sell the building that houses her Emerald Bay Center for Women's Health.

The potential buyer came to look at the property, and shortly after, a vacationing doctor called to see if she'd like to sell her practice.

Dr. Mandi Weavil wins Dancing With the Tahoe Stars

A packed house at MontBleu Resort Saturday night witnessed ten local celebrity couples dancing for the ultimate prize, the mirror ball trophy, during Tahoe Art's Project annual Dancing With the Tahoe Stars fundraiser.

After a few weeks of practicing with their trained professional partner, the celebrities put on an entertaining show that brought out the cheers and applause, and lots of money for the non-profit.

For the past few weeks, "celebrities" from South Lake Tahoe have been practicing with their professional partners, all in a quest to win the coveted mirror ball trophy in the Tahoe Arts Project's 4th annual Dancing with the Tahoe Stars

All of the rehearsing, and nursing aches and pains, have come down to this, the final event which will be held at MontBleu Resort on Saturday, March 5 at 6:30 p.m.

South Tahoe Now caught up with a few of the couples in their secret rehearsals as they polished up their dance moves in preparation for the big night.

The next cast for the Tahoe Arts Project's Dancing with the Tahoe Stars has been announced, and the list contains ten South Lake Tahoe business owners, educators, police sergeant, and other well known locals.

Professional dancers will be working with the "celebrities" to teach them each a dance they'll bring to the MontBleu stage on Saturday, March 5, 2016.

The Stars:

Dr. Kelly Shanahan will be teamed up with Rainer Herm to dance Disco.
Iris Kahm is teamed up with Jorge Favio Orozco to dance Salsa.

Performing Arts Gala before January 22 Cinderella performance at STHS

The South Tahoe High School Performing Arts Booster Association (PABA) is holding their annual gala on Friday, January 22 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., prior to the evening's performance of Cinderella.

Despite its name, this is a dress-as-you-please event in the school's Student Union which will feature a photo booth complete with a glass slipper and a silent auction. There will be refreshments made by the STHS culinary students. The whole evening promises to be fun for the whole family.

Metatatic Breast Cancer deserves more

October is pumpkin spice and jack o lanterns and crisp mornings and pink ribbons. It is Halloween and homecoming and races “for the cure”. For people like me, with metastatic breast cancer, it is “Pinktober” and a reminder that we will never be cured, because despite 30 years of awareness and fundraising, 40,000 Americans still die every year from metastatic breast cancer, just as many as died in 1970.

Dr. Scott Welker, from Barton Memorial Hospital at South Lake Tahoe performed his first single-incision cholecystectomy (surgical removal of the gallbladder) with the da Vinci Si Surgical System on Wednesday, May 9.

“With all of the added benefits of less pain, less blood loss, shorter hospital stays and a reduced risk of infections, the single-incision allows us to do cholecystectomies via one incision in the umbilicus (navel), which is nearly invisible after it heals,” Dr. Welker said.
