Farmers Markets return to the South Shore

It is time for farmer's markets to return to South Lake Tahoe and Stateline, the first two set to start Friday, June 3.

On Friday, the popular Ski Run Blvd market opens for their seventh season at 3:00 p.m. Food, crafts, fruit and vegetables will be featured in the middle of the block in front of Blue Angel Cafe. This market will be on all Fridays from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. through September 30. For more information, visit their website www.skirunfarmersmarket.com.

Young fans line up to watch elite women cyclists in Thursday's Amgen

It's not every day that elite cyclists come to your hometown for an international race, so when they do, take advantage of it. Students from Bijou Community School walked to the corner of Pioneer Trail and Ski Run Blvd. on Thursday to watch Stage 1 of the Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease Race.

As the women raced by the young fans, they heard the chanting of "U.S.A" and the sounds of cowbells.

After a race around Lake Tahoe, Stage 1 for the women ended with Megan Guarnier of the United States in first. Here are the winners Thursday:

Skujins breaks away at finish line to win Stage 5 of Amgen in South Lake Tahoe

Stage 5 of the Amgen Tour of California is in the books. 24-year-old Toms Skujins from Latvia burst across the finish line at Heavenly Mountain Resort at the last second Thursday, edging out Adam De Vos of Canada and Xabier Zandio of Spain to take the win.

The day began as riders left Lodi at 50 feet above sea level, and crossed the finish line 130 miles later in South Lake Tahoe at 6,650 feet.

Great viewing spots throughout South Lake Tahoe for Amgen Tour

Not only do people around South Lake Tahoe get the opportunity to watch international stars of men's cycling on Thursday, they also get to watch the women as the Amgen Tour of California features both races.

There will be a Lifestyle Festival in the parking lot at Heavenly California Base Lodge from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This is the starting and ending point for the women's race, as well as the finish for the men, so a great viewing spot, but there are other opportunities to watch the cyclists as they zip by all through town.

Tahoe Mountain Lab provides unique work situation

While the official grand opening isn't until May 26, the doors have opened and office spaces are filling up at the new Tahoe Mountain Lab in South Lake Tahoe. What was once the Tahoe Daily Tribune offices on Lake Tahoe Blvd. is now home to 24 private offices, shared work spaces, tables and desks as well as the local paper's new office.

With two City Council members missing, vote on potential tax increases delayed

In just over one hour, the South Lake Tahoe City Council finished up all of their business for the day, but not all that was on the agenda.

City Council members Hal Cole and Tom Davis were both missing from the May 3 meeting, Davis due to a planned County Supervisor luncheon and Cole due to illness.

Volunteers needed for Amgen Tour's South Lake Tahoe competition

The Amgen Tour of California South Lake Tahoe Organizing Committee is seeking 300 volunteers for the combined stages for men and women on Thursday, May 19, 2016.

The men’s elite race Stage 5 will begin in Lodi, Calif. at 10 a.m., and finish around 3:45 p.m. at Heavenly Mountain Resort’s California Base Lodge in South Lake Tahoe totaling 132.4 miles. The women’s Stage 1 will start at 10:50 a.m. and finish approximately at 2:00 p.m. at Heavenly, totaling 72.7 miles.

High speed chase in South Lake Tahoe Tuesday morning

An officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department attempted to pull over a SUV Tuesday morning near the intersection of Carson Avenue and Lake Tahoe Blvd for a traffic violation. The driver of the vehicle, which was a black 2005 GMC Envoy, failed to pull over and led officers on a high speed chase eastbound on Lake Tahoe Blvd.

A witness said the cars looked to be going 80 mph. When they got to the area of Ski Run, officers lost site of the vehicle and its two occupants when they pulled back due to safety concerns, and the pursuit was terminated.

Tibetan Monks returning to South Lake Tahoe

Tibetan monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery are returning to South Lake Tahoe from April 1 to April 6 with a full schedule of ancient and colorful participatory activities, Dharma talks, meditations, and cultural rituals to promote inner healing.

Events, unless otherwise noted, will be at the Blue Angel Cafe, located at 1132 Ski Run Blvd.

All events are donation based and all proceeds will go towards funding the construction of the Phukhang College House at Gaden Shartse, which houses over 600 exiled monks in the Tibetan Refugee Zone in India.

Motel and surrounding property could be demolished to make way for new project

The Knights Inn could be purchased by the City of South Lake Tahoe for $6 million should a grant be awarded them by the California Tahoe Conservancy. If that happens, the City would purchase, and then demolish, the motel located on Highway 50 near Ski Run Boulevard to make way for a new environmental and retail project.

There is grant money available through the CTC which the City will apply for. The funds come from the state's Proposition 1 Water Bond which was approved by voters in 2014 to authorize $7.545 billion in general obligation bonds for water projects.

Malcolm C. Pribyl 1946-2016

Former resident of South Lake Tahoe, Malcolm Pribyl, passed away at the age of 69 on January 19, 2016.

The long time local had recently moved to the Sacramento area due to illness.

Malcolm graduated from Tracy High School and U.C. Davis. Following completion of his military service, Malcolm moved to the South Shore where he worked at Sahara Tahoe.

He owned Malcolm C Pribyl Insurance Agents And Services which operated for years on Ski Run Blvd, after which he operated out of his home on the meadow near the college.

Amgen Tour announces Lake Tahoe men's and women's race schedule

Lake Tahoe will be the scene of both Amgen Tour of California's men's and women's races in May of 2016, and the routes announced Thursday show cyclists will ride into the Tahoe Basin from Kirkwood and Hope Valley, circle the lake, ride up the mountains leading to the Heavenly Mountain Resort and through South Lake Tahoe.

Amgen officials said more than 350 of the world’s top cyclists will challenge themselves in Lake Tahoe by putting their strength and muscle power to the test as they climb, descend and break away along steep and winding stretches of the Sierra on Thursday, May 19.

Search continues for missing Sugar Bowl ski instructor

The search for a missing Sugar Bowl ski instructor has been called off for the evening by the Placer County Sheriff's Office.

More than 50 people spent the day searching for 23-year-old Carson May who hasn't been seen since Thursday when he went skiing after work.

Searchers, with the help of search and rescue dogs, have been focusing their search on the back side of the mountain where the sheriff's office has been able to get pings from May's cell phone.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is hosting a “Coats for Kids Drive” during the month of January and they are looking for donations from the community.

Be a hero and help children of the South Lake Tahoe community stay warm this winter by donating gently used coats. All donations will be distributed to children in need within South Lake Tahoe.

Forty-nine year old Shawn Michael DeCosta is behind bars after being arrested Tuesday on suspicion of burglarizing the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) in South Lake Tahoe on January 4, 2016.

Man who inspired South Lake Tahoe act of kindness movement dies of ALS

Just over two months ago, we wrote about how a large group of South Tahoe High alumni were rallying behind one of their classmates, Kevin Sullivan, who was suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

At October's homecoming football game at STHS, many of Kevin's classmates from the class of 1984 and former teammates from the wrestling and football teams came together to honor Kevin and fondly share their memories.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue hosts blood drive and coat drive

Holiday Parade heads through South Lake Tahoe Saturday

The fourth annual Holiday Parade will make its way through South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, December 12 starting at 3:00 p.m.

Golden Bear Events is the organizer of the event which will raise money and food for Christmas Cheer, South Lake Tahoe's year-round food pantry.

This year, ten parade entries will start at the top of Ski Run Blvd, head down towards the lake, turn west on Highway 50 and end in the TJMaxx parking lot where people can enjoy cookies and a visit with Santa Claus. The parade should end there at approximately 3:45 p.m.

With storm headed to Lake Tahoe, Caltrans offers tools to help be prepared

With a forecast for the Sierra of a significant snowfall over both Donner Summit and Echo Summit, Caltrans issued a statement for motorists to take caution and to alert drivers of tools at their disposal to help them on their trip.

High winds are predicted with heavy snow, creating the potential for white-outs and even blizzard conditions on summit passes between Wednesday night and Friday morning.

City may use eminent domain to complete Ski Run to El Dorado Bike Path

There are five small pieces of property standing in the way of completing the Ski Run Blvd to El Dorado Beach Class 1 multi-use trail, and it was determined in a City Council vote that South Lake Tahoe can resort to using eminent domain if necessary in order to complete it.

The walking and biking path is ten feet wide, and as it crosses the land in front of the old Don Cheapo's Ski Rentals, Beach Retreat at Tahoe, Heidi's Restaurant and Tahoe Beach & Ski Club, the City needs easement in order to make the path the required width, make it safe, and have it landscaped.

South Lake Tahoe drive-by shooting suspect arrested on multiple felony charges

The hunt is over for the suspect in the October 14 drive-by shooting in South Lake Tahoe that sent a 19-year-old man to the hospital.

Samuel Tovar, 43, was arrested after a high-risk search warrant was served at 816 San Francisco Avenue at 10 p.m. Friday, October 4. Inside they found Tovar, who had been avoiding law enforcement since the shooting.

Low inversion layer keeping smoke from prescribed burns near ground

Smoke from local prescribed burns can be seen, and smelled, through much of South Lake Tahoe today. A cool night and low inversion layer have trapped the smoke closer to the ground than normal.

What most residents are experiencing is coming from a 69-acre prescribed burn area near Trout Creek that was ignited Friday. The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department said there are no vegetative fires in the basin.

Smoke was especially heavy Friday night and looked much like fog while navigating many streets in the area.

New mayor and end of plastic bag ban on SLT City Council agenda Monday

Hal Cole's term as mayor during the City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th anniversary is coming to a close. During the next City Council meeting on Monday, December 7, the next mayor and mayor pro-tem will be elected. All current council members are eligible though first term Councilwoman Wendy David is the current mayor pro-tem.

Normally held on Tuesdays, the Council meeting was moved to Monday so Tom Davis could attend his daughter-in-law's graduation from nursing school in Tennessee. The meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers at the airport.

Schedule for South Lake Tahoe's decorated fire truck released

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department has released the schedule for their 2015 decorated Christmas engine. All of the fun runs nightly from December 10 to 24 barring any weather issues or emergencies.

The truck leaves Fire Station 2 at 5:00 p.m. nightly.

Prescribed burns to continue in Lake Tahoe basin next week

North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service will continue widespread prescribed fire operations beginning the week of November 30, 2015.

Operations are planned for the following areas:

57 acres on urban lots on the west side of Incline Village. Smoke expected to travel North/Northeast/East.

28 acres off Fairway Drive near Tahoe City. Smoke expected to travel North/Northeast/East.

105 acres in Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park north of Spooner Lake. Smoked expected to travel Northeast.

North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service will continue widespread prescribed fire operations around the Lake Tahoe Basin over the next several weeks as conditions allow.

4th Annual Christmas Cheer parade seeking banner sponsor

The fourth Annual Holiday Parade to benefit Christmas Cheer is seeking a sponsor to purchase a new banner. High winds last year destroyed the old banner which is on display at the South Lake Tahoe Visitors Center.

Parade organizer JoAnn Conner and her Golden Bear Events, is looking for donation(s) to help purchase a new one to leave more of the proceeds to Christmas Cheer, a local food closet.

This year's parade will be held on Saturday, December 12th, and begins at 3:00 p.m.
