Step back in time 150 years to Genoa of yester-year on Friday night, November 8 as Snowshoe Thompson, Sgt. William Coray and Stagecoach Driver Charley Parkhurst visit the Genoa Town Hall. This will be one of the first big Nevada Sesquicentennial Events and it will benefit the "Friends of Snowshoe Thompson" and the "Town of Genoa".

The show will be from 7 to 9 pm. There will be open seating, no host cocktails and door prizes. Donations of $12 for adults and $5 for kids can be paid for at the door.

The Beacon Bar and Grill at Camp Richardson in South Lake Tahoe will hold its next wild and spirited evening snowshoe cocktail races Feb. 16 and again on March 16. Both events begin at 7 p.m.

The events are free to participate in with snowshoes provided by Camp Richardson’s Mountain Sports Center in South Lake Tahoe.

Along with the snowshoe cocktail races, this South Lake Tahoe event will include food and drink specials, prizes for winners and losers, and happy hour prices until closing.

With seven feet of new snow in the past four days, Kirkwood Mountain Resort is living up to its reputation for the deepest and driest snow around Lake Tahoe and is well on its way to exceeding its average annual snowfall total of 600 inches.

So far the 2012-13 season snowfall total for Kirkwood is 210 inches, and more is on the way with storms heading into the New Year in time for the mountain's 40th anniversary.

National Winter Trails Day at Van Sickle State Park

As part of National Winter Trails Day, the Tahoe Rim Trail Association will host free guided hikes on Jan. 12, 2013 from 10am to 2pm through the newly opened Van Sickle State Park behind Harrah’s Casino at Stateline South Shore Lake Tahoe.

There will also be outdoor gear demonstrations, raffle prizes, and a Warming Party at Explore Tahoe after the hikes.

This South Lake Tahoe event is a family-friendly introduction to snowshoeing and to winter opportunities on the Tahoe Rim Trail. Participants will have to bring their own shoes, snacks, water and warm clothing.

Reservations begin Dec. 17 for Winter Trek Express at Lake Tahoe

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin accepting reservations for the 2013 Winter Trek Express program on Monday, December 17, 2012.

Teachers may reserve a spot by calling the Forest Service front desk at (530) 543-2694, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Winter Trek Express is a 5th-grade environmental education program that takes place at Heavenly Mountain Resort via the gondola. Forest Service rangers lead the class through the wilderness to learn snowshoe skills and discover winter adapting animals.

Kirkwood opens 40th season with four feet of snow

Kirkwood Mountain Resort opened its 40th anniversary season when the lifts began turning at 9 a.m. Friday, five days earlier than its originally-scheduled opening day. Kirkwood opened with one chairlift and five trails, accessing 40 total acres.
“The last two storms that have rolled through the Sierra have dropped a combined four feet of snow at Kirkwood, allowing us to open early for all our passionate skiers and riders,” said Casey Blann, general manager of Kirkwood. “This will be a great start to the 40th anniversary season at Kirkwood, and the first with Vail Resorts.”

The workshop will be on Thursday, June 7 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Incline Golf Course Chateau located at 955 Fairway Boulevard in Incline Village. Staff from the Tahoe Rim Trail Association and the U.S. Forest Service will also be there to answer questions.
