Former Horizon Casino in Lake Tahoe to become a Hard Rock Casino & Hotel
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/17/2014 - 12:10pmSouth Lake Tahoe's Horizon Resort Casino is going to be a Hard Rock Casino & Hotel by the end of 2014 or beginning of 2015.
This comes amid local speculation and rumors that have been circling the community since the Horizon's closure this spring.
The new casino has a facebook page and website already.
Hard Rock Lake Tahoe is undergoing $60M in renovations and redesign that will highlight rock and roll and will also serve as a live music venue.
Drought affecting California State Parks including D.L. Bliss in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/13/2014 - 9:12amA lack of water in California has prompted water restrictions to be imposed at California State Parks including Lake Tahoe's D.L. Bliss.
Due to the drought conditions showers, flushing toilets, and trailer dump stations will not be available at the park and chemical toilets have been put in their place.
According to the park's website, drinking water will continue to be available at the spigots throughout the campground but there will be no showers.
Two more bear cubs brought to Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/10/2014 - 5:50pmIt's not a record breaking year for bear cubs at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, yet. Two more cubs were brought to the care facility on July 9 from the Paradise, California area, bringing the total of cubs now at LTWC to eight.
The new cubs are named Paradise 1 and Paradise 2, as with all of the other cubs they take on the names from the area they were living. As of today they have these two, along with Bieber 1 and 2, Conway 1 and 2, Meyers and Tahoe who was named before knowing that she came from the Northern California coastal area.

3. Access - Good access helps emergency responders arrive in a timely manner.
South Lake Tahoe Citizens Academy Holds 4th Graduation

The Spring 2014 academy was held from April 9-May 21, 2014 and consisted of 13 attendees including: Douglas Bolton, Tom Burkart, Ian Caruth, Tobias Devor, Janill Gilbert, Misty Johansen, Jen Menzel, Jo Mutz, Lannette Rangel, Jonathan Schank, Leslie Schultz, Brandon Swartz, and Judy Weber.
BMP Retrofit Project Approved for Tallac Historic Site

The project will reconfigure the three entrances to the site in order to reduce confusion of travelers and create a more efficient use of paved surfaces. There will also be an internal road created to serve as a connector between Tallac, Kiva and the Visitor Center so vehicles will not have to exit to Hwy 89 to move about.
This project was first proposed in January of 2011. Work may begin in Spring of 2015 and is expected to take 10 years to complete.

Whittell High School Parents Upset With Planned Cuts

Several concerned parents attended the last meeting and many more are planning on making the drive to Minden for this week's meeting. The parents have taken their mission to social media with starting the Facebook page: Concerned citizens and parents for Whittell High School.

South Tahoe High Varsity Baseball Team Headed to State Tournament
Submitted by paula on Sat, 05/17/2014 - 4:05pmThe South Tahoe Vikings varsity baseball team is headed to the Nevada State Division 1-A Tournament May 22-24 after taking 2nd place in the Northern Championships Saturday.
Friday's Northern Nevada Tournament action saw South Tahoe beat Number 1 seed Elko in the morning game, followed by Fallon beating Spring Creek in the afternoon and South Tahoe losing to the Fallon team in the nightcap.
South Tahoe had the morning game again on Saturday, in which they beat Spring Creek by a score of 10-8.
South Tahoe Vikings Host Division 1a Playoffs This Week

This is only the second time in school history for the team to make it to the post season, and the last time was in 1994, when current Viking coach Starbuck Teevan was a junior on the team.
They join Elko, Churchill County and Spring Creek in this weekend's Division 1a playoffs to be held Friday and Saturday at South Lake Tahoe's Todd Fields.

The queens are the only bee colony member to hibernate in the winter. She emerges in spring and begins to look for a suitable place to build a nest and begin her new colony. By the end of summer one colony can have 4,000 to 5,000 yellow jackets.
So if you take out one queen, you eliminate thousands of bees.
Fallen Leaf Project to Improve Trail Access
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/29/2014 - 7:05pmWork will start as early as May 5th on the Forest Service's Fallen Leaf Trail Project. The project will improve the trail system by improving access to popular destinations and reducing congestion and user conflict.
The first phase will be worked on this spring and summer. The result will be a new bike path from Fallen Leaf Lake Campground to the Pope Baldwin Bike Path.
Final Weekend of the Season at Kirkwood: 28" of New Snow
Submitted by paula on Sat, 04/26/2014 - 7:06amA Spring storm dropped snow on the Sierras Friday, leaving a couple of feet of snow to blanket the higher elevations and a couple of inches at lower levels around Lake Tahoe.
Kirkwood Mountain Resort is in it's last weekend of operations for the 2013-14 season and is celebrating 2" of snow at the base and 28" at the summit in the last 24 hours. Even with the recent weeks of mild temperatures, their base is still recorded at 64".
They are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

A couple of inches of snow is expected at lake level before the storm heads out early Saturday morning.
Thursday night: Rain, mainly after 1am. Low around 34. Breezy, with a southwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.
Friday: Snow. High near 40. Breezy, with a southwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

South Lake Tahoe Police and Fire Departments Participate in Active Shooter Exercises
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/04/2014 - 2:12pmIn order to be trained and prepared to handle active shooter situations, the South Lake Tahoe Police and Fire Departments took part in exercises at Lake Tahoe Community College on Thursday, April 3. They will continue the exercises on Monday at Tahoe Valley Elementary.
Both training sessions take place at school campuses that are on Spring Break so students and classes are not disturbed. The purpose of the exercises are to give the departments an opportunity to work together in order to be prepared should an active shooter incident take place within the city limits.
Changes, Including Boat Inspection Fee Increase, Coming for 2014 Lake Tahoe Boating Season

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board approved the fee update for the watercraft inspection program to help sustain boater services after a reduction in their federal funding.
The changes the TRPA approved this week:
* The decontamination fee will increase from $25 to $35 dollars only charged to boaters who don’t arrive at the inspection station Clean, Drained and Dry. All other fees will remain the same.

They will be stepping up enforcement to ensure that motor vehicles are sharing the roads with the bicyclists and reducing the accidents between the two.
Spring is here which means Nevadans will be taking to the road to get some exercise and soak up some sun, so you will begin to see more people biking along the roads in Nevada.

Harrison Avenue Project Moves Forward

In Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council action, the final steps of the Harrison Avenue Project were unanimously approved after 20 years of planning, discussing and talking by the City, business owners, property owners and residents.
The project will start this spring with substantial completion by October 15, 2014. The wrap up of the project will be complete by December 1, 2014.

Lake Tahoe Golf Course Opens For Season; Earliest Date in History

Lake Tahoe Loses 5 Feet of Clarity in 2013; Winter Waters Clearer, Summer's Declining

Data released today by the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC)and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency reported the average annual clarity level for 2013 at 70.1 feet. While the reading represents a 5 foot decrease over the previous year, it is still well above the lowest value recorded in 1997 of 64.1 feet and above recent years' averages.

Whittell High School's Boys Basketball Team Wins Nevada State Title

The Warriors beat Spring Mountain on Friday in a close game by the score of 53-50, getting them into the final round for their 4th game of the year against Virginia City.
KNBB televised the game live from the University of Nevada.

Elko is now 18-3 and South Tahoe 8-11.

Year's First National Water Forecast Predicts Limited Supply in Lake Tahoe and Rest of West
