The Virginia & Truckee Railroad will once again offer special train rides over the Mother's Day weekend, May 13-14, that will take moms and families from Carson City to Virginia City aboard a historic train.

All mothers will be honored with a long-stem rose as they board the 1953 ALCO (American Locomotive Company) heritage diesel locomotive for the 16 mile trip to the Comstock-era town of Virginia City.

Internationally bestselling author Garth Stein, whose book “The Art of Racing in the Rain” has sold more than 4 million copies and been published in 35 languages, will appear at Tahoe WordWave Oct. 9-11 at the Tallac Historic Site in South Lake Tahoe. His newest book, “A Sudden Light,” is set in a large historic house in the woods similar to Valhalla’s Grand Hall, the site of WordWave’s Friday night steampunk ball, held from 6-10 pm, kicking off with a Champagne reception with Stein. Karla Huntsman will combine the art of storytelling with her talent as a musician, in a performance at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday August 26, at 6:30 pm. The event is open to the public and free to attend.

Making meaning through story and theater activities has been Karla Huntsman’s life work. Huntsman believes in the power of storytelling to infuse life, joy, connection with self, and connection with others no matter the age of the listener. She sings, plays guitar, autoharp, washboard and djembe drum as part of her storytelling performances.

Writers, readers and performers from all around the country will appear at South Lake Tahoe Oct. 9-11, 2015 for WordWave, a three-day festival held on the grounds of Valhalla at the Tallac Historic Site. This literary mash-up will feature oral storytelling, theater performances and free readings, panels on craft, yoga, and a novel writing camp for kids. Highlights include a one-act playwriting contest, a Maker’s Station demo with bookbinding, letterpress, drum making, and found poetry and art. Ticketed events include a steampunk ball, workshops, and even a hike.

It's been a weird ski and riding season, for sure. One indication is that Heavenly Mountain Resort is only operating the Boulder base lodge and the Boulder and North Bowl lifts on weekends. In all the years I taught at Boulder never has had a shutdown like this. Too bad because lots of locals liked Boulder as out-of-towners didn't go there very often. Thus, parking was close and runs not crowded.
