A magnitude-5.7 earthquake struck 25 miles southwest of Ferndale, Humboldt County on Wednesday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake was reported 40 miles southwest of Eureka. According to USGS, the quake took place at 1:08 p.m.

Lt. Wayne Hanson of the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office says no damage or injuries were immediately reported, the Associated Press reported. No tsunamis are expected from the earthquake, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office responds to calls throughout the county.

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) was awarded over $150,000 to look into providing safer, more walkable and bikeable off highway routes around South Tahoe Middle School (STMS), Bijou Park and Lake Tahoe Community College. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) awarded the grant as part of their $500,000 "On Our Way" program grants.

Another public workshop to get feedback from the community will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the STMS Multi-purpose room.

Have you noticed the new, blue signs placed along some of the South Lake Tahoe bike trails? They are part of a pilot way finding sign project to help cyclists between Kingsbury Grade and Meyers.

There are currently eight signs up in four locations, so people using the trails can see the directions from opposing views.

According to Steve Noll, community planning consultant with Design Workshop, “the international best practices for way finding signs consist of four elements known as 'The Four D’s: distance, direction, destination and distinction'."

Drug and alcohol statistics for 2013 show that the rate of drug use in America has declined by approximately 30% from 30 years ago but has risen fairly steadily since 1992.

Yesterday, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) released an overview of the findings of the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). The report released yesterday showed that in 2013 illicit drug use in America was stable over the previous year:

The Recreation Mater Plan has been in front of local citizens, community groups and staff for the past several months, and now their ideas and suggestions has formulated a Draft Master Plan that can now be reviewed.

The Plan is intended to provide strategic guidance for the management, improvement and development of City and County parks, in conjunction with the recreation opportunities provided by other public and private entities in the South Shore.

The Tahoe Prosperity Center (TPC) wants to facilitate the expansion of high speed internet in the Lake Tahoe Basin, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. In order to see where the need is, a speed test of your current internet service and a survey is being conducted.

After lengthy debate during Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting, a 3-2 vote changed the direction of the second phase of the plastic bag ban.

In January, 2014, a ban on single use bags was implemented for all grocery stores and food vendors in the city limits. That portion of the ban has not changed. What has changed is the second phase which was going to expand the ban to retail stores starting on October 15, 2014.

Living in a forest gives great benefits, but it also carries with it the risk of forest fires.

A Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) for South Lake Tahoe is being developed jointly by the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department and Lake Valley Fire Protection District.

The community is being asked to complete a survey which will help the agencies prepare the CWPP. This will enable the creation of a plan on how the south shore will reduce it's risk of wildfire by identifying strategic sites and methods for fuel reduction projects.

How often do you use Kingsbury Grade?

Due to the closure of Kingsbury Grade this Spring and Fall, the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD), Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and TahoeChamber are asking for input in order to anticipate travel needs for residents and business owners during the Kingsbury Grade Construction project.

Survey results will be used to better understand residents’ needs and arrange adequate public transportation during construction.

The first snow survey of the season found more bare ground than snow throughout the higher elevations of the state. The survey, conducted by the Department of Water Resources on Friday, found the 9.3" of snowpack at Phillips Station to be 20% of the long term average. A dismal 2.3" of water content was found.

The City of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County want your input in order to create a new plan for parks, facilities and trails to best match resident's and visitor's needs.

The Lake Tahoe Outreach Committee is concluding a survey to discover what the public thinks are the most important actions people can take to help protect the Lake Tahoe region. Results of the survey will be used to inform the creation of a new Tahoe area Environmental Stewardship Messaging Campaign. Individuals have until 5 p.m. Monday, September 16th to weigh in and can take the survey online.

From Tahoe’s mountaintops to the lake’s sandy bottom, scientists from the University of Nevada, Reno continue to study and find solutions to the breadth of issues that face the entire Lake Tahoe Basin. Their research is making a tangible contribution to the decisions, policies and practices that guide the basin’s environmental health.

An unmanned submarine headed for Antarctica will first explore the depths of Lake Tahoe on Friday to study the blasted rocks of a seismic fault created thousands of years ago by a huge earthquake that ruptured the lake's floor.

Ross Seitz, an engineering geologist with the California Geological Survey and an expert on the lake's ancient quake history, will be using the tethered sub to gather underwater images of the West Tahoe fault, which last ruptured some 2,500 years ago with a magnitude of more than 7.
