Updates to PCE contamination in South Lake Tahoe to be discussed at public meeting

A 400-acre plume of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) has been found in some of the South Lake Tahoe groundwater and the agencies tasked with protecting the local drinking supply will be updating the community on cleanup efforts and the status of the plume on Wednesday, June 26 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the South Lake Tahoe City Council Chambers at the airport.
250 cigarette butt collection canisters to be installed around Lake Tahoe

At the League to Save Tahoe's most recent cleanups this month (the Tahoe City Cleanup and the South Lake Tahoe Bike Path Cleanup) over 4,500 cigarette butts were collected. Last year more than 27,600 cigarette butts were collected in and around Lake Tahoe by the League alone.

South Lake Tahoe's SnowGlobe: "It’s a great event, it's in the wrong location"

If they do not have a good plan in place after those first two years the City could terminate the contract.

They are questioning the fairness of the selection process, and one is stating that all three applicants who had the top scores evaluation scores should be disqualified. A third applicant said he is in the process of filing an appeal.

New website shows visitors and locals over 40 public beaches in the Tahoe Basin

Along the iconic shores of the lake are hidden gems along with popular spots, all providing people a chance to experience the beach and shoreline activities.
The website offers information about how to get to each beach, where to park, hours of operation, what amenities and services are offered, if any, along with other helpful information beachgoers might be interested in.

South Lake Tahoe City Council to discuss possible change to Charter City

Now there is discussion about changing to a charter city. During their March 5 meeting, Councilmember Cody Bass asked that this subject come forward at a future meeting and Councilmembers Jason Collin and Devin Middlebrook said they were interested in learning more about what the differences are between the two, and what it would mean to South Lake Tahoe to switch.
Former SLT City Attorney headed to new job in Santa Maria
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/30/2019 - 4:13pmFormer South Lake Tahoe City Attorney Tom Watson has resigned from his position with the City of Tracy, California and taken a new one as the City Attorney of Santa Maria, a community south of San Luis Obispo.
Watson will start with them on June 17 after his contract was unanimously approved by the Santa Maria City Council on May 7.
"I have confidence in his abilities to manage and lead the City Attorney’s Office for years to come,” said Mayor Alice Patino in a news release. “I look forward to him effectively managing the legal needs of our city.”

Council approves new officers for South Lake Tahoe Police Department
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/21/2019 - 10:14pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The current staffing level of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is 30 authorized, sworn officers, and even with this low number they are rarely at full staffing. During the summer of 2018, the department handled an average of 99 calls per day and had 196 incidents where no officer was available to respond immediately, and about 15 times a day they told callers to 911 the officer would be delayed.

Lake Tahoe Chapter of DAR celebrates its organization
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 05/08/2019 - 6:26amDaughters of the American Revolution (DAR) members from all over California came together on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course to celebrate the new DAR Chapter in South Lake Tahoe.
The chapter was officially organized by the National Society on February 5 of this year, and was welcomed to the city with a proclamation at the South Lake Tahoe City Council's April 16 meeting, Sunday's event was the formal recognition of the chapter's status as the newest in California. City Council member Tamara Wallace attended the event and read the proclamation to the attendees.
Airport Way renamed "Lisa Maloff Way" in honor of her numerous contributions

In this proclamation, the City extended to Lisa and Robert "Bob" Maloff their appreciation and gratitude for the numerous donations made to the local community. Her philanthropic donations have forever changed the community and her donations

City seeks public comment on the 2019-2020 Budget

Everyone is encouraged to attend. The meeting starts at 9:00 a.m.in City Hall at the Airport and is the midway through the agenda. Prior to the budget talk there will be four presentations, the approval of the consent agenda and three other hearings.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/29/2019 - 5:29pmThe SR89/Fanny Bridge Community Revitalization Project on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe has not progressed as expected and completion will not happen in 2019 though lots of work is scheduled.
Weather, utilities and construction scheduling have put it well behind the original 2018 planned completion and now construction work will be getting off to a late start in 2019 because of high water levels at the lake and Truckee River after an above average winter of snow and rain. Crews are expecting to start around mid-June.

South Lake Tahoe to spend almost $3M on new snow removal equipment
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/23/2019 - 9:34pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With about $8 million in unassigned General Fund reserves, the South Lake Tahoe City Council voted last week to spend about $2.5 million for the replacement of four pieces of critical snow removal equipment and the purchase of one new piece of equipment.
The Department of Public Works has thirty-one pieces of heavy equipment assigned to snow removal operations for use on roads, the airport, facilities, parks, and
trails. Some of that equipment can do double duty and work during non-winter months including loaders, pick-up trucks, and tractors.

New camping ordinance approved by South Lake Tahoe City Council
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/17/2019 - 10:31amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On the heels of a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ recent decision that stated cities cannot criminalize sleeping on public property where there is no alternative shelter space available, the City Council Tuesday updated South Lake Tahoe's camping code.
Prior to Tuesday, the City Code prohibited camping on all public property, except in areas specifically designated for camping, but that was not enforceable since there is no permanent shelter in South Lake Tahoe at this time, just seasonal.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been over three decades in the making. The US50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project, also known as the Loop Road, is getting closer to becoming a final plan and its implementation.
The South Lake Tahoe City Council heard a presentation by Tahoe Transportation District (TTD), Lew Feldman and John Hasty of Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) on Tuesday, outlining what has been accomplished and what is left to be done.
