Sass Talk: Cannabis, VHRs and the 4th of July

July kicks off the busiest time of the year for our city. Schools out, the temps are soaring in the valleys to the west and east of us, the roads are free of snow, and visitors from all over the world are getting away to see beautiful places and enjoy the great outdoors. For many of our businesses this is is the best time of the year. For many locals who like to play on the mountain trails and along the beach and eventually need to get to work, this is the hardest time of the year.

Auto thefts and burglaries continue to target South Lake Tahoe residents

There has been a rash of suspicious circumstances in the Gardner Mountain area over the last week, ones that remind residents to lock their cars to prevent petty theft and other crimes of opportunity.

On March 19 between 4:04 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., 10 calls went into the South Lake Tahoe Police Department about suspicious activity on Gardner Street, Clement Street, Julie Lane, Tata Lane and Sand Harbor Road. In each incident, dome lights were on several cars as if some person(s) attempted to open them. In one incident the truck's doors were open and a stereo was stolen.

Tahoe, A Visual History may be gone, but memories to last a lifetime

Recently, I had the chance to visit the much-hyped Tahoe: A visual History at the Nevada Museum of Art. Located in the hip, CalAve District wedged between downtown and midtown Reno, the museum offers locals to the region a taste of world-class art collections. During events like Art Town (a marathon of a hundred-or-so art related events in Reno during the month of July), the museum offers innumerable pieces from local and global artists alike.

South Lake Tahoe city budget fight looms large; layoffs eminent

As an early snowstorm descended on South Lake Tahoe the first week of October, the continuing winter of economic discontent looks bleak for the city’s budget woes and employees facing layoff. Seventeen positions are still on the chopping block. At least half of those positions are linked to street maintenance and snow removal operations. While negotiations between the bargaining units and the city continue to be held, there is a hint of an impasse — while the city functions on only an interim budget until the end of the month.
