Fundraising campaign underway to add dog water station in Rabe Meadow
Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/16/2021 - 1:08amSTATELINE, Nev. - The very popular Rabe Meadows to Nevada Beach Trail, also known as the Lam Watah Trail, has no water stations along the route for dogs and their humans, and a local resident is trying to change that.
In cooperation with Douglas County, the U.S. Forest Service and Lake Tahoe Planning and Permitting LLC, Liz Lawton would like to raise the funds necessary to purchase and install a doggie drinking fountain and water bottle filling station. It would be located at the trailhead near the intersection of Kahle Drive and US50 by the restrooms.

Most traffic-interfering work will be restricted from 6:00 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8 due to the Labor Day holiday.

Tahoe Fund grant helps TAMBA get started on Tyrolian Trail construction
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/11/2020 - 1:13pmA $45,000 grant from the Tahoe Fund has allowed the nonprofit Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) to begin a trail improvement project that will reconstruct sections of the Upper Tyrolian Trail in Incline Village. The project is designed to enhance the user experience, make critical trail connections, rehabilitate and restore old logging roads to reduce erosion and improve lake clarity. It is expected to be completed by the end of October 2020.
Park Tahoe paid parking pilot program starts at East Shore Trail
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/22/2020 - 10:25amINCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - When the three parking lots with 90 spaces were created last year in Incline Village for the popular East Shore Trail, they were free but all were told paid parking was coming in the near future.
That time has now come.
Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) has unveiled the Park Tahoe pilot program at the trailhead north of Ponderosa Rand Road. The lots were created to expand off-highway parking options along the high traffic area of SR28 between Incline Village and Sand Harbor State Park.

Crews working on two lightning caused fires at Lake Tahoe

The Alert Tahoe Fire Camera system was active with fire officials able to zoom in on possible problem areas.
Pair arrested on suspicion of breaking into cars at Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley trailheads
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/26/2020 - 2:59pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Two people have been arrested in connection with six vehicle burglaries at trailhead parking areas in Douglas County, four at Lake Tahoe and two in the Carson Valley.
Between May 16 and May 23, 2020, the two suspects, Carolyn Brinkman and Harvis Berry, allegedly broke into cars, stealing cash and credit cards, then using the credit cards immediately at local stores, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO).
Neither the name of the stores or trailheads have been disclosed.
USFS beaches and sites around Lake Tahoe to remain closed through May 15
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/01/2020 - 2:03pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A temporary closure order for USFS beaches and recreation sites around Lake Tahoe has been extended through at least May 15, 2020. The original order was set to expire May 1. To keep in alignment with current federal, state, and local guidance for social distancing, and to ensure the health and safety of its employees, visitors, and volunteers, it was extended.
Trailheads and trails outside of the orange areas of the attached maps, or the ones on the closure website, are not affected by this order but parking lots are closed.
Fatal shooting in Douglas County under investigation
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/22/2020 - 10:28amDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff's Department (DCSO) Is investigating a shooting that left one dead in Gardnerville.
At 9:31 p.m. on March 21, 2020, DCSO deputies responded to a report of gunshots in the area of the 1400 block of Bumblee Drive. When they arrived they found a deceased male, a victim of gunshot wounds.
Deputies located, detained and interviewed all parties they believed to be involved.
No parking fee at Eagle Falls trailhead Saturday in honor of National Public Lands Day

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) manages approximately 78 percent of the public land in the Tahoe Basin. They will continue to the celebration of NPLD through the weekend of October 5-6 when they host a booth at the Fall Fish Festival at Taylor Creek in South Lake Tahoe. This time is also the 50th anniversary of Desolation Wilderness.

The Sierra Business Council has just released the 2019 Lake Tahoe Water Trail Map & Access Guide to help paddlers safely find their way along the water route. It pinpoints all of the 37 public launch and landing sites, including the Lake Tahoe Water Trail's 20 trailhead sites with wayfinding signage, restrooms and parking.

Join Tahoe Climbing Coalition at Eagle Lake trail clean up

To celebrate the beginning of climbing season the Tahoe Climbing Coalition is sponsoring a garbage and micro-trash pick-up on the Eagle Lake trail on National Trails Day, Saturday, June 1 at 10:00 a.m.
Come with water (reusable bottle), sun protection and gloves, and they'll provide the rest. They will be meeting at the parking lot/trailhead of Eagle Falls.
The clean-up will be followed up with a crag meet-up at the 90-foot wall.
If you choose to park in the parking lot at Eagle Falls bring $5 exact change for parking. There is limited parking along SR89 outside the parking lot.
Opening dates announced for USFS recreational spots around Lake Tahoe

Free Nordic skiing back at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/06/2019 - 11:43pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Through a private-public partnership, California State Parks and the Sierra State Parks Foundation successfully brought back free Nordic skiing at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park along Lake Tahoe’s West shore.
The public can ski on the trails made famous when the 1960 Winter Olympics’ biathlon and cross-country events were held there, designed at the time by South Lake Tahoe's Martin Hollay.
There have been various threats to the continued grooming of the cross-country ski trails at Sugar Pine Point due to funding shortages.

Ski for free on Olympic trails at Sugar Pine Point State Park

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Ski on the trails made famous in the 1960 Winter Olympics during a free ski day at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park on Saturday, February 2 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
California State Parks and the Sierra State Parks Foundation are bringing back groomed Nordic skiing at the park and have invited the public to enjoy the sport in the same spot the biathlon and cross-country events of the Olympics were held.
The latest round of winter storms has brought in plenty of fresh snow for the park to offer this popular pastime.
Missing snowshoer located off Tahoe Rim Trail
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/07/2019 - 10:50am2:45 p.m. update: Search and rescue teams spent Sunday night dredging through deep snow and in very windy snowy conditions to locate the missing snowshoer Raymond Murdock.
The initial search for Murdock was called off in the early morning hours due to the snow and avalanche conditions, resuming Monday morning at 6:00 a.m.
Douglas County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue team called in the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office was made for additional personnel and Raven for aerial observation.
Body of hiker missing in Alpine County found at bottom of cliff
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/05/2018 - 12:08amSearch and Rescue teams located the body of missing hiker Bradford Dozier on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the base of a cliff in Alpine County.
A search was initiated after Dozier left on a hike to the Carson Pass area on October 27. His car was found on Sunday at the Evergreen Trailhead. It appears Dozier died after falling 200 feet as he attempted to free climb steep terrain on the north side of Peak 9626 according to the Alpine County Sheriff's Office.
Dozier was described by family and friends as an avid and strong hiker who enjoyed climbing peaks in the Sierras.
Lake Tahoe Christmas Tree permits go on sale November 14

Starting November 14, 2018, The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will begin selling the $10 permits on a first-come, first-served basis. Permit holders may choose from a variety of pine, fir or cedar trees up to six inches in diameter (at the base) in designated cutting areas.
Search underway in Alpine County for missing hiker
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/31/2018 - 12:12amALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - Search and rescue teams were out in Alpine County on Tuesday, searching for a missing hiker.
55-year-old Bradford Dozier was last seen in Sacramento on Saturday morning. Family members said he was heading to the Carson Pass area to go hiking and hasn't been heard from since.
Dozier's car was found on Sunday at the Evergreen Trailhead but his actual destination is unknown.

National Trails Day community cleanup in South Lake Tahoe

June 2, 2018 - 9:00am The Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) and partners, the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association and US Forest Service, are organizing a morning community trailhead cleanup on Saturday, June 2 at 9:00 a.m.
Celebrate National Trails Day, the nation’s largest gathering of trails by volunteering cleaning up the South Shore. Volunteers are needed to help remove graffiti off of massive granite boulders and remove garbage on a trail connector into Van Sickle Bi-State Park.

Injured paraglider rescued from steep embankment near Mt. Rose
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/29/2018 - 8:28amAn injured paraglider was rescued from a steep embankment along the Mt. Rose Highway near the Slide Mountain trailhead on Monday, May 28.
Rescue personnel from North Lake Tahoe Fire, Truckee Meadows Fire and the Washoe County Sheriff Search and Rescue team and HASTY team assisted in getting the injured person up from 200 feet down using high angle rescue methods.
Victim’s injuries are not life-threatening per fire personnel.

They’ll meet for coffee at Clydes Coffee Roasting Co at 10:00 a.m. and will take off around 11:00 a.m. Public, media, cycling enthusiasts, community members, businesses are welcome to mingle for coffee as well as join them for a fun race/bike ride to the beach.
USFS gives opening dates for Lake Tahoe recreation areas

Weather and snow conditions permitting, Inspiration Point will be the first site to open on Saturday, April 14, 2018. Baldwin and Nevada beaches open April 28. The Taylor Creek Visitor Center opens Friday, May 25. The Tallac Historic Site parking area opens Tuesday, May 15, and will be staffed beginning Saturday, May 26.

Squaw Valley Park to stay open for free snow fun this winter
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/23/2017 - 10:07pmFinding a spot to build a snowman or do a little snowshoeing will be a little easier this winter as Placer County’s Squaw Valley Park in Olympic Valley will remain open to offer a free snow play option for visitors and residents.
The park’s parking area will be plowed all winter long, creating a free and convenient place to park and play.
Christmas Tree permits go on sale November 13

Permit holders may choose from a variety of pine, fir or cedar trees up to six inches in diameter at the base in designated cutting areas. Trees must be cut on the forest where the permit was purchased (the ENF is south and west of the Lake Tahoe Basin, on the west slope).
Lake Tahoe recreational areas and forest roads begin their seasonal closures

Seasonal closures apply to many Forest Service recreation sites including beaches, campgrounds, picnic areas and forest roads. Keep in mind that Tahoe Valley and Zephyr Cove Resort campgrounds remain open year-round along with Camp Richardson and Zephyr Cove resorts and beaches.

Bears breaking into cars at Desolation Wilderness trailhead

Pictures on the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit Twitter page have shown windows torn from their frames and the foam from seats pulled apart.
Bears want food, and if food, not matter how small of trace, is left in a car, they will go after it.
These break-ins are a good reminder to not leave food in cars, no matter if the door is locked or not.

Fire breaks out in mountains southwest of Reno
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/01/2017 - 4:23pmUPDATE 6:15 p.m.: The Whites Fire has burned 60 acres on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Carson Ranger District near the Whites Creek Trailhead. The fire, burning southwest of Reno, is threatening eight structures in the Logan Meadows area.
Traffic is closed to Timberline Drive, except for local residents. There is no access to the Thomas Creek and Whites Creek Trailheads.

Crews are responding to a new wildfire southwest of Reno off the Mount Rose Highway in the Timberline area.
Snow and water still over many Desolation Wilderness trails
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/26/2017 - 8:57amThe U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit wilderness ranger scouting expeditions last week have brought back some updated trail conditions for those planning to venture into Desolation Wilderness.
Many hikers are turning around because of difficulty they have in finding the trail because of the large amount of snow at upper elevations, limited dry ground, frozen lakes, and high stream crossings.
Some USFS campgrounds in Lake Tahoe opening May 12
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/03/2017 - 3:10pmSnow is preventing some Lake Tahoe West Shore campgrounds from opening, but others are ready to go beginning May 12, 2017.
The West Shore campgrounds still have a large amount of snow at lake level which is causing the delay in their opening. Meeks Bay Campground will open on May 19, and Kaspian and William Kent campgrounds will open on June 2.
Fallen Leaf Campground will open May 12, but some sites will be closed due to wet conditions.

USFS announces Lake Tahoe recreational facilities opening dates
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/11/2017 - 10:15pmWeather and snow conditions permitting, Lake Tahoe recreational facilities will soon be open! The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) announced today they will begin opening some spots in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Inspiration Point will be the first site to open on April 15, 2017. The Taylor Creek Visitor Center opens May 19 and will be staffed weekends only until Memorial Day weekend. The Tallac Historic Site parking area opens May 1 and will be staffed beginning Saturday, May 27.
