SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe and the Sierra had a lot of lightning and thunder Tuesday afternoon, leading to a few fire starts in the area. The Alert Tahoe Fire Camera system was active with fire officials able to zoom in on possible problem areas.
The first is being called the Twin Peaks Fire. At approximately 3:20 p.m. the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) was notified of a tree on fire on Twin Peaks above Lake Tahoe Golf Course. The lightning strike caused about a 1/10 acre fire that was responded to by the Tallac Hotshots and a helicopter for bucket work.
The Trail Fire started near the Mt. Tallac trailhead west of Fallen Leaf Lake and was followed by the Sweetwater Fire north of Emerald Bay above Sweetwater Drive. CalFire, North Tahoe Fire and LTBMU crews all responded to them. No structures are threatened at this time and crews are working on containment.
A larger fire in on Peavine Mountain in Nevada. The Peavine Fire is currently estimated at 15-30 acres and has had help from rain in the area. Humboldt-Toiyabe and Truckee Meadows Fire are engaged in suppression operations with air and ground resources.
