Meyers multi-use trails won't be plowed this winter

MEYERS, Calif. - Due to a lack of viable bids from local snow removal contractors there will be no plowing of the multi-use trails on the lake side of El Dorado County this winter.

In July the Bicycle Advisory Committee of the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Facilities JPA awarded $22,000 to El Dorado County for bike trail plowing in the county for winter of 2019/20. When the project went out to bid they only received interest from Alpine Smith, according to Donaldo Palaroan, P.E., senior civil engineer for the County. Their $48,500 bid was more than double of what was budgeted.

Fire damages South Lake Tahoe home during dangerous red flag conditions

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Had it not been for the quick response by first responders, a fire at a South Lake Tahoe home Wednesday could have been much worse due to the dry conditions and high winds.

Lake Valley Fire Protections District (LVFPD) crews responded to a structure fire off of Lodgepole Trail. Upon arrival crews found the home in flames and additional resources were called to the scene to prevent further spread of fire to neighboring homes and vegetation.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation but appears to be accidental," said Kileigh Labrado of LVFPD.

Tahoe Valley Elementary shows school is more than just academics

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - The students at Tahoe Valley Elementary School are enjoying the fruits of many volunteers' labors as the new greenhouse, Tranquil Garden, climbing stumps and outdoor learning areas have been completed and officially dedicated.

Principal Christina Grubbs gathered staff, parents and community members prior to last week's Back to School Night to thank all who took part in the projects, and to show off what the kids now get to enjoy.

"This is a labor of love for all to enjoy," said Grubbs.

South Shore projects win TRPA's Best in Basin Awards

Several South Lake Tahoe projects were awarded this week by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) as being the "Best in the Basin" for demonstrating exceptional planning, design, and compatibility with Lake Tahoe’s environment and communities.

The projects that were recognized upgraded highways, built new bike trails, improved water quality, restored environmentally-sensitive areas, remodeled blighted commercial buildings, and created defensible space for better wildfire protection.

The Best in the Basin award winners are:

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care breaks ground on new home

Tom and Cheryl Millham have been operating Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) out of their home since 1978. Since then, they've treated over 22,000 animals, released over 14,000 rehabilitated animals back into the wild, have a volunteer crew of 2,000 people, and train 50 to 100 new volunteers annually.

Nevada lawmakers to feds: Pay up for Tahoe fire work

Fed up with waiting, Nevada lawmakers are ramping up efforts to have private companies, fire districts and others paid for work conducted years ago to reduce fire danger in vulnerable areas around Lake Tahoe.

The Legislature earlier this month passed a joint resolution urging Congress to pay contractors who performed extensive fuels treatment work in the wake of Tahoe's disastrous Angora Fire of 2007.

Op/Ed: Why you should vote for Kenny Curtzwiler

Kenny Curtzwiler – www.voteforkenny.com

I have lived, worked and enjoyed South Lake Tahoe as a resident since 1977 when I came here for a vacation and stayed on as so many have. What makes me qualified for this position?

Commitment. I have been married for 33 years, raised three children, owned a Tree Service and Roofing Company for 33 years and served for 20 years in the Nevada Army National Guard, retiring as an officer with the rank of Major. I will not go along with the status quo of cronyism and favoritism that has stifled our local economy in El Dorado County District 5.

Op/Ed: Why You Should Vote For Me on Tuesday

My name is Kenny Curtzwiler and I have lived, worked and enjoyed South Lake Tahoe as a resident since 1977 when I came here for a vacation and stayed on as so many have. Many of you know me as The Skibum. Many of you know me as the Bartender at Carlos Murphy’s for 19 years and many of you know me as a Contractor and owner of K & K Services, a Tree Service and Roofing company. Regardless of how you know me the point is you know me, you know my thoughts and position on everything that concerns our community. There is no hidden agenda with me.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Bear Cubs Begin Hibernation

Are you ready for some fun? Well, it may be ‘fun’ for us, BUT for our seven bear cub in the BEAR Cage at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, it is not so much fun for them.

We are putting them into hibernation. Yesterday (Monday, Nov. 12), they ate their 'Last Supper.’ Today, they were introduced to some green tree limbs, supplied to LTWC by Ed Cook of Ed Cook’s Tree Service in South Lake Tahoe. The cubs knew exactly what to do with the limbs. They started chewing them.

Opinion: June Skibum

Loop road poop road, you do realize that the state is going to do what they want, how they want and when they want with concerns to the Loop road. This is probably the best chance we have to get out of our financial obligation with regards to pensions, healthcare, unsound financial decisions, raising taxes, giving away the keys to the city to every con artist around and quite possibly the clap.
