When times are tough, South Lake Tahoe volunteers and businesses step up

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As one would expect in South Lake Tahoe, the community has been coming together to help others during these trying times and uncertainty.

Base Camp Pizza has been one of those businesses that have helped out the community. On Friday they dropped off 120 pizzas, 75 salads and 100 pasta dishes to Bijou Community School for families there who were picking up kids' homework and other supplies to use for at-home study. Local girl scouts donated boxes of cookies to hand out.

That is, until today.

Warming room to open in South Lake Tahoe December 18

Not having a place to call home in a community where winter temperatures often drop below freezing could be hazardous to the increasing number of homeless men, women and families in South Lake Tahoe.

Recognizing the need, a group of concerned community members formed the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless. Their goal was to create a warming room, a place for those on the streets to come in from the elements to keep warm.

Group looking for homeless "Warm Room" in South Lake Tahoe

For an estimated 20 days a year, homeless people would have access to a "warm room" where they can seek refuge when temperatures drop below freezing and conditions are deemed unsafe.

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) asked the South Lake Tahoe City Council today for access to the recreation center between the hours of 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. on nights when there is a forecast of extreme temperatures. Wanting to keep the homeless population on the South Shore safe, TCH asked for permission to house approximately 20 men and women on a temporary basis.
