Lake Tahoe Wildlife Bear Cubs Begin Hibernation
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 11/13/2012 - 9:56pmAre you ready for some fun? Well, it may be ‘fun’ for us, BUT for our seven bear cub in the BEAR Cage at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, it is not so much fun for them.
We are putting them into hibernation. Yesterday (Monday, Nov. 12), they ate their 'Last Supper.’ Today, they were introduced to some green tree limbs, supplied to LTWC by Ed Cook of Ed Cook’s Tree Service in South Lake Tahoe. The cubs knew exactly what to do with the limbs. They started chewing them.

Record number of bears, bobcats at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

Scientists assemble five acres of mats for Tahoe Asian clam project
Submitted by Editor on Wed, 10/17/2012 - 7:48amRubber barriers bound for the lakebed of Lake Tahoe’s Emerald Bay are being assembled at the University of California, Davis, as part of the biggest Asian clam control project in the lake’s history.
The invasive clams threaten the lake's health and famed clarity.
UC Davis scientists, staff and students are unfolding the long, black mats and enhancing them with rebar, brass grommets and valves that will hold the barriers in place underwater and enable scientific analysis of the project.

Six-week Asian clam control project begins at Emerald Bay
Submitted by Editor on Thu, 10/11/2012 - 3:12pmBoaters heading to Lake Tahoe in the next six weeks may experience a short delay when entering Emerald Bay due to an Asian clam control project that will be taking place there.
The Asian clam control project is being implemented by a team of partners from the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Program, with plans to treat an area of up to 5 acres at the mouth of Emerald Bay. Treatment will be accomplished by covering the infested lake bottom with thin rubber barriers, augmented with organic material, that reduce the available oxygen and smother the clams. It will be the largest project of its type in the history of Lake Tahoe.

Asian clam control project at Lake Tahoe's Emerald Bay

Lake Tahoe problem bears this year have been 'mixed bag'
Submitted by Editor on Mon, 10/01/2012 - 5:25amBiologists anticipating serious problems with black bears raiding garbage and breaking into homes due to lack of food because of drought say the situation has been slow to develop at Lake Tahoe and along the Sierra front but that activity is now picking up in some areas.
The Nevada Department of Wildlife has received about 120 bear complaints thus far in 2012, according to bear biologist Carl Lackey.
While the year is shaping up to be a bit busier than 2011, it’s nothing compared to what Lackey originally expected in the wake of a remarkably dry winter.

We have had a total of six this year, which is the most we have EVER had, but the one we got in about a month ago, was just with us for about 3 days, after being hit by a car in the Woodfords, Calif., area. We got ‘her’ back so she could - hopefully – take care of her babies.

Submitted by Editor on Thu, 09/20/2012 - 3:09pmThe U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit affirmed Thursday a district court ruling upholding Lake Tahoe area environmental analysis for the Angora fire area fuels reduction project.
The Angora Restoration Project was designed to protect wildlife habitat as well as reduce long-term wildfire risk to Lake Tahoe area communities. Two environmental groups, Earth Island Institute and Center for Biological Diversity, tried to stop arguing it would harm the black-backed woodpecker.

'Chips' was rescued by a fireman working the blaze. She is about 1-1/2 pounds and has second degree burns on all four paws.

Various provisions of federal law mandate that federal agencies coordinate certain activities with local agencies before making decisions which may impact local government, according to a news release sent by Mike Applegarth, principal analyst for the county's chief administrative office.
It is important that county government track and analyze federal decisions in order to timely invoke the right of coordination and participate in the decision-making process.

“Over 96 percent of fees help support projects like the Lake Tahoe Water Trail and access to beaches like this,” says Wild, standing on the beach at Watermans Landing. “I train on the lake every day. Tahoe is a treasure, and I have a Tahoe plate to show my love for this magical place.”
Lake Tahoe Wildlife Center releases Golden Eagle

August 26, 2012 (All day) Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care released its first Golden Eagle of the season on Sunday at Carson Pass. Release is the final process of the three areas of wildlife rehabilitation.
For the next three weeks, Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care's Eagle Team will be exercising a minimum of three eagles, preparing them for release back to the wild.

Mountain lion found at Reno casino released near Lake Tahoe
Submitted by Editor on Sun, 08/26/2012 - 4:02amA nearly 100-pound mountain lion that tried to get inside Harrah's in downtown Reno Friday morning is back in the wild in the mountains above Lake Tahoe.
The mountain lion was tranquilized and kept in Carson City Friday and early Saturday morning before officials headed to Lake Tahoe where the cat was released above Spooner Summit, said Chris Healy of the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

Conservation group seals deal to buy Royal Gorge
Submitted by Editor on Mon, 08/06/2012 - 8:38amThe famed 3,000-acre Royal Gorge property on Donner Summit in the Sierra Nevada will be bought and protected from development under an agreement announced today by The Trust for Public Land, the Truckee Donner Land Trust (TDLT), and the Northern Sierra Partnership (NSP).
The agreement is a big change for a property that, as recently as 2007, had been slated for major resort development. That proposal stalled in the face of overwhelming opposition and an unfavorable economic climate – opening the way for conservationists to buy the land when the bank foreclosed on the loan.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, which cares for and rehabilitates sick and injured animals, is having its open house today, Sunday, August 5, from 10 am to 4 p.m.
Tom Millham of the center reports having eagles, bears, bobcats, raccoons and a river otter, plus more to see. The Millhams also want to show off its new expanded Bear TV video operation which has nine cameras looking in at all of the wildlife.
Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care will also have retail items for sale as well, including t-shirts, hats, jackets and its new 'metal' LTWC license plate holders.
