Heirloom tomatoes are varietals that have been grown for at least 50 years without crossbreeding. They are open-pollinated, meaning that they are naturally pollinated by wind, bees, and other factors.

Knight Monsters release 2024 schedule - Home opener at Tahoe Ice Arena October 24

STATELINE, Nev. – The Tahoe Knight Monsters have announced the team’s complete 2024-2025 game schedule for their upcoming Inaugural Season set to begin in October.

The Knight Monsters will play a 72-game regular season schedule (36 home, 36 away). The team will play a family-friendly home schedule comprised of ten Friday games, 11, Saturday games, six Sunday afternoon contests, four Wednesday games, and five Thursday games.

Falsely changing address to vote is fraudulent, and El Dorado County will investigate

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The proposed tax measure on the November ballot in South Lake Tahoe will directly affect people who do not live in the area as it proposes to tax second homeowners up to $6,000 per year if they live in the house less than six months.

The problem for many is the fact that they cannot vote on the vacancy tax that will affect them due to their voter registration being at their main residence.

Letters have been sent out to property owners in the city limits who don't live or vote in South Lake Tahoe to alert them of the Vacancy Tax citizen-led initiative.

Exploring nature's classroom: The annual children's Forest Field Trip at Tallac Historic Site

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.— Last week, third and fourth graders from South Lake Tahoe and Zephyr Cove elementary schools made the trek to Tallac Historic Site for the annual "Children’s Forest" field trip. Judge: Initiative to ban VHRs in Lake Tahoe area of Douglas County won't appear on November ballot

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - An effort to get an initiative on the November ballot to ban vacation home rentals (VHRs) in the Lake Tahoe area of Douglas County hit another roadblock, this one being a ruling by Judge William Maddox on Monday, June 3.

The judge upheld the Douglas County commissioners' finding that a petition to change the ordinance on vacation home rentals was insufficient. The petition had been circulated by a group of signatures but did not meet the required valid signatures.

Guided tours offered of Al Tahoe Pioneer Cemetery

Voting opens to select design of new Douglas County Justice Center

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Over $50 million has been approved to build a new Justice Center in Douglas County. In 1980, with a population of 19,400, the County relocated several County Departments to a newly constructed two-story Justice & Law Enforcement Center (JLEC) located at 1038 Buckeye Road in Minden.

Now, 40 years later and with a population of almost 50,000, the services provided in the building exceed the design capacity of the space, and a new building has been approved, also to be located on Buckeye Road.

Gas Line Replacement Project on State Route 28 resumes Sunday night

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans is advising motorists of traffic-interfering work continuing on State Route 28 (SR-28) along the north shore of Lake Tahoe next week.

Southwest Gas and its contractor, Q&D Construction, continue work on a gas line replacement project on SR-28 between Tahoe City and Kings Beach.

- One-way traffic control is scheduled between Agate Road and Sahara Drive from Sunday, June 2 at 7 p.m. until Friday, June 7 at noon.

Hours-long standoff in South Lake Tahoe after Saturday morning stabbing

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High School Junior Optimist Club is holding a fun field day for kids in grades K-8 on Saturday, June 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the South Tahoe High School softball and baseball fields.

Kids get to try out new things offered at the high school and in the community. There will be various activities, including softball, wrestling, cheer/dance, football, volleyball, arts and crafts, and Career Technical Education (CTE) classes like sports medicine. Parking area at Bayview Trailhead near Emerald Bay partially opens June 1

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – To ease parking congestion in the popular Bayview Trailhead & Day-Use Area near Emerald Bay, the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will open a portion of the parking area tomorrow, June 1, 2024.

The parking fee is $10, and visitors should be aware that construction is ongoing and the parking area may close occasionally throughout the summer. Visitors should use caution in areas with active construction activity and equipment. No overnight parking is permitted.

TTD adds stops for East Shore Express this summer, service starts June 28

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The East Shore Express bus service returns beginning June 28, 2024, according to a Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) announcement Friday. This season, hourly paid parking will be available at the Tunnel Creek parking lot, located at 1102 Tahoe Blvd. at the Tahoe East Shore Trailhead. This strategic change is meant to enhance access and convenience for riders.

South Tahoe High senior ready for Simpson University's first full season of football

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Simpson University in Redding, California is set to start its inaugural season for football this fall, and the team will have another South Tahoe High School graduate, Allen Aparicio, on the roster.

Jeremy Renner's foundation holding summer camp for foster youth at Lake Tahoe 4H Camp, counselors needed

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Actor Jeremy Renner, who has a home near Mt. Rose at Lake Tahoe, has created a foundation to support foster youth in the Reno/Northern Nevada area. The RennerVation Foundation is holding a summer camp for those foster youth at the 4H Camp in Stateline from July 1-5, 2024, and camp counselors are still needed.

The biggest need is for male cabin counselors and high-school-age counselors in training. A cabin houses about 10-12 youths.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - At its regular meeting on May 21, 2024, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors proclaimed the period of May through October 2024 as Wildfire Awareness Season as a call for residents in El Dorado County to prepare for wildfire.

Although late spring rains delayed the typical onset of dry fire-prone conditions, the weather is changing as evidenced by the increase in vegetation fires in the last few weeks.

Sugar Pine Foundation volunteers plant 16,800 seedlings this spring

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There were 16,800 seedlings planted this spring, a lot of little trees including sugar pines, Jeffrey pines, and white pines, according to the Sugar Pine Foundation.

They said there are now a lot of little trees to water this summer!

"Thanks to lucky timing of our planting events, we managed to stay mostly dry even though it rained and snowed quite a bit in April and May," said the Sugar Pine Foundation in a letter to supporters. "Of course, the precipitation was fantastic for watering our newly planted baby seedlings!"
