SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) will be holding its next Wellness Clinic for dogs and cats in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, January 9 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
No appointment is necessary, and pets will be seen on a first come first serve. They are located at 3438 Lake Tahoe Blvd. HSTT asks that people park in the large lot on the east side of the building.
The elusive mountain lion not always easy to catch on camera around Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/03/2024 - 12:04pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Toogee Sielsch of South Lake Tahoe normally spends his free time with the urbanized bears around the south shore, but his cameras placed in the wild often catch other native animals.
A photo found on one of those cameras this week showed something he hadn't been able to capture before, a mountain lion. These big cats live in the Lake Tahoe Basin, but their elusive behavior sometimes makes them seem non-existent.
Temporary restraining order to halt alleged ongoing fraud on consumers and banks

Talbert announced.
The charges involve a South Lake Tahoe man.

There has been a slow start to winter. In its first monthly snow course measurement of the year at Phillips Station on Tuesday, the Department of Water Resources (DWR) measured the snowpack at 30 percent of average with a snow depth of 7.5 inches. There is a snow-water equivalent of 3 inches.

Winter Weather Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/02/2024 - 10:26amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Greater Lake Tahoe area starting Tuesday at 10 p.m. and lasting until 1 a.m. Thursday.
This system will be followed by another one this weekend.
Neither of the systems looks to be particularly strong, according to NWS Reno, but they are capable of producing travel impacts. The weekend storm is colder and appears to be the stronger of the two at this time.
Record crowd at New Year's Eve celebration at Heavenly Village
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/01/2024 - 7:40pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly Village's New Year's Eve celebration was big, with organizers estimating several thousand people took in the music and fireworks as they welcomed in 2024 to South Lake Tahoe.
The event featured an array of performances by bands Decades from Chico and from NBC’s The Voice, Kristen Brown.
As the clock hit 9 p.m. (midnight in New York), the fireworks display with the gondola coming down the mountain thrilled those watching.
Wandering bear dies after being clipped by vehicle on I-580 freeway in Carson City

The driver and passenger, a mother with her young son aboard, were not injured.
The collision was reported to dispatch at 8:47 p.m., December 31. Airbags were deployed. According to a Carson City Fire Department battalion chief, the vehicle clipped the bear on the passenger's side.

This upcoming week the pattern remains progressive with two storms projected to move through the Sierra and western Nevada. Be sure to monitor road conditions midweek as well as next weekend with snow in the forecast.
Temperatures will be dropping, with highs below freezing by next weekend. Here is a report from the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno for the week ahead at Lake Tahoe:

Leona Allen will be walking with the U.S. Forest Service float celebrating Smokey Bear's 80th birthday.
Leona is a former Lake Tahoe Fire Academy instructor, current Lake Valley Fire Protection District Board Secretary, and is now on the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) fire patrol, when needed. One of her LTBMU supervisors put her name in for being a float participant, and she was selected.

US50 reopens after being closed for investigation

Earlier today there was a suspicious package left at the electronic sign at Twin Bridges and law enforcement closed the highway for an investigation. While the investigation continues, no explosive was found and the road is now open, free of controls.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - US 50 is currently closed from Meyers to Pollock Pines (Sly Park Road) due to a "police investigation." According to Caltrans, all cars must exit.
All agencies are involved, according to CHP Dispatch.
At this time it is unknown when the road will reopen.

There are also many myths regarding trafficking, which is why educating ourselves is critical. Many believe traffickers are usually strangers to the victim when, in fact, that’s the most uncommon situation.
Current statistics show that around 42 percent of trafficking victims were brought into trafficking by a member of their own families, and 39 percent were recruited via an intimate partner or a marriage proposition.
Child Advocates of El Dorado County appoints new executive director

Natalie joins CASA El Dorado with extensive experience in child welfare advocacy. With a law degree from Pacific Coast University, her background includes serving as court-appointed counsel for youth and families for the past five years.
CASA dedicates services to support, empower, and provide a voice for El Dorado County abused, neglected at-risk youth.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches above lake level, with up to 12 inches possible above the 7,500-foot level.
TubeTahoe adds Neon Night Tubing

The crowds have been coming out to enjoy the daytime tubing, and now the business is adding Neon Night Tubing on some select dates.
Now people can enjoy neon lights, snow tubes, and laughter "that can be heard from space," says Tube Tahoe Co-founder Leon Abravanel.
Tahoe casinos "win" figure $19.73 million in November
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/28/2023 - 12:15pmNevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,374,350,070 for November 2023, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's monthly report released Thursday. This amounts to a 12.56 percent increase compared to the same month a year ago when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,220,945,367. For the fiscal year to date (since July), the gaming win has increased by 4.74 percent with $6,572,928,432 in "win".
The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.
TTD plans late night bus service to Tahoe Blue Event Center this weekend

The extra service is scheduled to help with New Year's Eve revealers and those attending the two-day Excision concert at the Tahoe Blue Event Center.
Buses will stop on US50 directly in front of the event center at the designated bus stop.

It has nothing to do with masks or social distancing but has everything to do with parking. Many people heading to Tahoe to find some sort of snow to play in have forgotten how to be safe and park safely along the roadways.
In just a few days over the Christmas holiday weekend, 111 parking tickets were issued by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) on US50 at Echo Summit and SR89 at Emerald Bay.

Identification of skull leads cold case investigation to missing South Lake Tahoe woman

It has been over 53 years since Donna Ann Lass was last seen alive while working at the then-Sahara Tahoe. Her disappearance was covered in a South Tahoe Now story marking the 50th anniversary of that date, September 6, 1970.

Lake Wind Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe as first wave of systems arrives
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/27/2023 - 10:24amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday. They said to expect southwest winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Wave heights from 2 to 3 feet are expected, with the highest waves from mid-lake to the north and east shores.
Small boats, kayaks, and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

Commissioners vote 3-2 to ban vacation home rentals north of Cave Rock at Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/26/2023 - 4:15pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Douglas County Commissioner Danny Tarkanian asked for a ban of vacation home rentals (VHRs) in all areas north of Cave Rock State Park on November 2, and in two meetings, the ban is now complete. The issuance of permits will end on December 31, 2024, after the passing of a new ordinance.
"Two-thirds of my proposal on VHRs has now passed," Tarkanian said in an emailed overview of the meeting. "The last part is reducing the number of VHR permits in each neighborhood based upon the analysis of VHR Program Manager, Ernie Strewlow."
