With only an interruption during World War II, the El Dorado County Fair has been going strong since 1859. The 2016 fair will be held June 16-19, 2016 at the fairgrounds in Placerville.
South Lake Tahoe City Councilmember Tom Davis, a long time board member of the fair, is this year's Board President.

New security fence going up at SLT Police Department

In the plans since 2014, the black metal fence with three rows of razor wire at the top should be completed by the beginning of July.
"This is a need we've had for a long time," SLTPD Lt. Brian Williams told South Tahoe Now. "We received support from the City Council and City Manager, and the fence has been a long held desire for this department."
Another South Lake Tahoe murder suspect arrested, this time in Oklahoma
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/01/2016 - 2:34pmThe fifth suspect in the January 30, 2016 murder of an Amador County man at the Beverly Lodge in South Lake Tahoe has been arrested. 26-year-old Dion Jermaine Vacarro, a former resident of Solano County, Calif., was arrested in Oklahoma City on suspicion of the murder on Dennis Wright, Jr. after a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Get free firewood permits online
Submitted by admin on Wed, 06/01/2016 - 2:08pmThe California Tahoe Conservancy today announced that free firewood gathering permits and firewood locations are now available online. Permits are valid until December 31 of the year printed or downloaded.
“The new online system will make our program more accessible to people throughout the Tahoe Basin and will save people time because they will no longer need to come into our office to obtain a firewood permit. The rest of the program remains unchanged,” said Milan Yeates, the Conservancy’s Community Firewood Program Coordinator.

On Saturday, May 29 at 12:08 p.m., the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office received a call of the missing 15-year-old who was hiking in the area with family and became separated from the group and was last seen near the river.

Leave No Trace events in South Lake Tahoe to raise awareness

City receives $3 million in grants for South Lake Tahoe projects

The money will be used for the following:
$1.8 million for design and construction of the Sierra Boulevard Complete Street Project
$510,000 for construction of the Tahoe Valley Greenbelt Project
$390,000 for purchase of a Sander vehicle replacement
$200,000 for the design and engineering of the Lake Tahoe Boulevard Bike Trail

The foundation's “Military to the Mountains” program will receive the donation so injured veterans can be trained on the slopes. The program, a partnership between Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, High Fives Foundation, Achieve Tahoe (formerly Disabled Sports USA Far West) and Adaptive Training Foundation, hosts and trains injured veterans of the United States armed forces on the slopes of Squaw Valley.

Due to the recent implementation of the new license plate reader system at the parking garage, the City now has flexibility to establish variable parking garage rates.
Businesses in the area who attract an evening crowd for music, dining and entertainment, contacted Cityy staff and requested a reduced evening rate.

Group formed to battle new Vacation Home Rental Ordinance change

There are current 56 different parcels in the City limits that are multi-family units that are also licensed vacation rentals and the City of South Lake Tahoe wants to prevent them from being rented, thus stopping the home owners from earning the needed income to keep their home.
Jerod Haase hires his old coach from South Tahoe High for Stanford job

According to the Fresno Bee, Orlich, who won three Central Section championships and more than 300 games in 14 seasons at Clovis High, is retiring from his district job to join Haase.
Small diesel leak in the Tahoe Keys cleaned up; cause unknown
Submitted by paula on Sat, 05/28/2016 - 4:53pmThere has been another spill in the Tahoe Keys, this time a small diesel fuel spill in the Spinnaker Cove area between White Sands and the beach.
On Wednesday, May 25, the spill was reported at about 4:00 p.m. to the California Office of Emergency Services by the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA). Employees from TKPOA immediately placed booms in the water to keep the fuel from spreading.
Clean Harbor arrived on Thursday to lay out more booms and absorbent pads on the fuel and were able to pull them out on Friday.

Donut and frozen yogurt shop opening in South Lake Tahoe

Jody Filgo and Sallie Ross-Filgo have been planning their dream for a long time, and now they have the space to do it, the old donut shop next to Raley's.
They got the keys on Tuesday and popped the sign up in the window, letting people know what is coming.
Electrical short at South Lake Tahoe motel causes early morning fire
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/27/2016 - 3:15pmThe cause is still under investigation as to why a mattress caught on fire Friday morning, sending two people to Barton Hospital with minor injuries.
Just after 6:23 a.m. May 27, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to the Sky Lake Lodge at 2644 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Once they arrived they found a mattress on fire.
Preliminary investigation shows an electrical short on or near the mattress caused the fire.
Coe Swobe, father of the Tahoe Bi-State Compact, dies at age of 87
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/27/2016 - 11:33amThe flag is flying half-staff at the TRPA offices today in honor of the passing of Coe Swobe who has been called the “Father of the Tahoe Bi-State Compact.”
Former Nevada State Sen. Coe Swobe died Thursday of liver failure at the age of 87.
“Lake Tahoe and the state of Nevada lost a stalwart champion in Coe Swobe,” said Joanne S. Marchetta, TRPA’s Executive Director. “Coe directed his passion for the lake into a lasting legacy that serves as an international symbol of cooperation in protecting an irreplaceable natural resource.”

In a very moving ceremony, late SLTPD Officer Mark Hounsell was honored for distinguished service. Hounsell and his wife Jeanne were killed in a single vehicle crash October 17, 2015. Two memorial shadow boxes were presented, one staying at the police department, the other going to the Hounsell's place of worship, Lifepoint Church in Minden, Nev.

Pier 1 store closing in South Lake Tahoe, Goodwill Industries coming in
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/26/2016 - 5:09pmCustomers of Pier 1 received the notice Thursday that the company's South Lake Tahoe store on Emerald Bay Road will be closing. Moving in will be a store owned by Goodwill Industries.
Originally, Goodwill was issued a South Lake Tahoe business license at the same location from 7/2009 to 5/27/2011. The new license was issued on May 6, 2016.
Neither of the corporate offices for Pier 1 or Goodwill Industries have returned calls made by South Tahoe Now. At this time, the closing and opening dates are unknown.

Prescribed fire burning near airport in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/26/2016 - 1:38pmA prescribed fire by the Lake Valley Fire Department in the trees and brush surrounding the Upper Truckee River caused some concern by area residents on Thursday afternoon.
Large plumes of smoke could be seen from miles away, and with the burn not on the normal U.S. Forest Service weekly list of prescribed burning, many calls were made from concerned citizens. According to the USFS office in South Lake Tahoe, they alone had dozens of phone calls.
Community invited to help the river during the annual 'Restoration Day'

They will survey the plants that volunteers planted last September, water any plants that need a little care, stabilize streambanks and survey for aquatic invasive plants. Volunteers can meet at one of four locations throughout South Tahoe to pick up litter from the areas around our bike paths. Then we’ll get together at the League to Save Lake Tahoe office located at 2608 Lake Tahoe Boulevard for a free lunch, raffle and celebration after 12:00 p.m. All ages are welcome and all supplies will be provided.
We encourage volunteers to ride their bike, which also makes you eligible to enter a free raffle for a chance to win a prize.
Gaming revenues drop in April for South Shore casinos
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/26/2016 - 9:01amIncome for casinos on the South Shore was down in April, 2016, with their recording a 12.48 percent drop in gaming win when compared to income from a year ago. They had a "win" of $12,708,195.
The gaming win represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.
For the fiscal year, the local casinos continue to be slightly off from last year, with a drop in the gaming win by 3.84 percent.
South Lake Tahoe water restrictions loosen slightly after wet winter
