LONG-TERM PROJECTS
State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by summer 2017.

During the City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 21, the following items will be addressed and possibly voted on:

The approval of $627,371 to be spend on the lobby of the SLT Airport to make improvements for both appearance and aging electrical and lighting. A Verdi, Nev., company submitted the bid to add a gas fireplace, log and iron accents, stone facade, new windows, walls and ADA complaince.

Approve measures to add two new tax measures to the November ballot, one to increase Tourist Occupancy Tax (TOT) by 2 percent and the other to increase sales tax by 1/2 percent.

The following are incidents the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue department responded to from June 1 to June 15, 2016.

June 1 - 11 calls: 5 EMS, 1 interfacility transfer, 1 vehicle accident no injuries, 1 police matter, 1 sprinkler activation no fire, 1 alarm activation no fire, 1 canceled en route.

June 2 - 11 calls: 7 EMS, 1 police matter, 1 vehicle accident with no injuries, 1 no incident found, 1 smoke detector activation no fire.

June 3 - 12 calls: 7 EMS, 1 unauthorized burning, 2 interfacility transfers, 1 dispatch error, 1 vehicle accident with injuries.

Heavenly Mountain Resort has created Epic Discovery Kids, a program offering free access to Heavenly’s new Epic Discovery summer activities to 2,000 kids from Lake Tahoe schools and non-profits as well as regional non-profits.

With the recent vote count on Measure E in El Dorado County still too close to call, the County's Capital Improvement Program and Traffic Impact Mitigation Fee Update have been put on hold.

The County Supervisors had been tentatively scheduled to adopt the two in August, but will now wait until questions raised by the Measure are resolved.

El Dorado County residents can keep their homes cooler this summer and warmer next winter by taking advantage of free weatherization services through the El Dorado County Community Services Weatherization Program. “The average household can save $400 or more each year on their energy bills after weatherization, depending on the work that is done,” said Kyle Hartman, weatherization supervisor with Community Services.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and its partners have started work on the Shoreline Plan, a collaborative planning process to enhance recreation and protect Lake Tahoe’s 72 miles of shoreline.

The aim is to strike a balance between recreational access, the many uses along Tahoe’s shores, and environmental protection. An inclusive, open public process will bring in as many voices and viewpoints as possible to represent a wide range of stakeholders in developing new policy and code over the next two years.

The 13th annual Day in Paradise on Saturday, June 18 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The day gets started with the Optimist Club's pancake breakfast, and moves into a full day of activites from a car show to a beer garden. Topping off the day are the Optimist's Duck Races.

The U.S. Forest Service is planning a project to restore the Taylor and Tallac creek ecosystems, an area that provides habitat for numerous protected wildlife speciesfas well as being an important hydrological connection to Lake Tahoe.

Named the Taylor and Tallac Restoration Project, the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will restore the large wetland complex where the two creeks were once connected through a series of four swales.

Public comment is sought on the Environmental Assessment, Initial Study and Initial Environmental Checklist.

Many people find law enforcement officers intimidating and unapproachable, so the South Lake Tahoe CHP office is holding "Coffee with a Cop" on Friday, June 24 starting at 9:00 a.m. at Alpina Coffee Cafe on Emerald Bay Road.

All community members are invited to stop by and chat, discuss community issues, have coffee, and build relationships.

Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the Department’s work in El Dorado County’s neighborhoods.

Authorities from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and Reno Police Department are looking for a 21-year-old woman who is wanted on multiple felony charges.

Haley Douglas is actively being sought on charges on burglary, fraud, theft and uttering ba forged instrument. Law enforcement believes she is in the Carson Valley.

On June 13, DCSO deputies went to an address in the Gardnerville Ranchos and were told by a family member that she had left an hour prior and has not been seen since. There is no associated vehicle information.

The search for Marc Ma, the 20-year-old University of Nevada Reno football player who went missing after a paddleboard outting on Lake Tahoe with teammates, will resume on Thursday, June 16.

The Tahoe Dive Team and volunteers from the Placer County Sheriff's Office will be joined by Kern County Sheriff's deputies and an out-of-state company to search for Ma who went missing on the afternoon of June 10 when winds came up and created dangerous conditions including 3- to 5-foot waves.

June is wildfire awareness month at Lake Tahoe. And nine years later, the 2007 Angora Fire remains a vivid remember that wildfire is one of the greatest threats facing our environment, our homes, and our businesses. We must prepare accordingly.

Our region continues to take important steps to manage that wildfire threat, improve the health of our forests, and create fire adapted communities that are prepared for the next wildfire at Tahoe. But there is more work to do.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Department is asking for the public's assistance in identifying two suspects who burlgarized a Mogul, Nevada home on Friday, June 10, stealing multiple weapons.

Nobody was home at the time, a fact that was verified by the suspects first knocking on the door. Entry was gained through a back door.

Both suspects are described as light-skinned males in their early-to mid-20s, driving a late 1990s to ealry 2000s Pontiac four-door sedan.

Anyone having information is asked to contact the Washoe County Sheriff's Detective's Office at 775-328-3320.

Barton Health is offering pre-participation physicals for students who were not able to attend the Tahoe Center for Orthopedics sports physicals event on May 25. All high school, middle school, and Pop Warner athletes from the Tahoe area can participate.

The free physicals are available at Barton Urgent Care and Family Practice the following days and times:

Authors Wanda and Richard Canton will speak on their book, Bodie Railway & Lumber Company: Railroad in the Sky 1881–1917, in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Sunday, June 19, at 10:00 a.m.

The Cantons’ book tells the story of the dream of bringing timbers and cordwood to the remote mining town of Bodie, Calif. by train. In 1880 the mining town of Bodie was located at over 8300' in the eastern Sierra. The plans for a 32-mile narrow gauge railway developed through hard work and some luck as well.

3:46 p.m. - Vague Threats - Al Tahoe Blvd - A 33-YEAR-OLD MALE INMATE ACCUSED ANOTHER INMATE, AGE 18, OF MAKING THREATS.

You may have noticed the bulldozer and tree removal activity adjacent to the Community Playfield on Al Tahoe Blvd this week.

Work has begun on the Community Playfields Expansion Project, one by the City of South Lake Tahoe to bring two new playfields to the area next to the current soccer field at Lake Tahoe Community College.

The owners of Jamba Juice in South Lake Tahoe will have a celebratory ribbon-cutting ceremony at their newly remodeled store on June 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Abra Teague, owner of Jamba Juice since January 2011, has seen a year on year increase of customers as visitors flock to enjoy the natural beauty and outdoor activities that South Lake Tahoe has to offer.

June 12-17 - State Route 89 (Placer County) from Mankato Place to Cathedral Drive: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations around the clock from 10 p.m. Sunday until 10 a.m. Friday for roadway excavation, drainage work and curb and gutter construction.

June 13-17 - State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from Cascade Road to Cascade Creek: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 2 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday and 2 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday for shoulder work and permanent erosion control.
