Lake Tahoe digging out

The trip to Lake Tahoe on Highway 50 and Interstate 80 Friday was not a pleasant experience for most drivers. Multiple accidents, road closures and heavy snow greeted them throughout the day and night. A winter storm warning is in effect for South Lake Tahoe until 10:00 a.m. Saturday.

It is a cold start to the morning Saturday with 13 degrees at 8:00 a.m. The forecast high for the day is 27. Expect snow showers after 5:00 p.m. with scattered snow showers during the day with an additional 1-3" possible, and another 1-3" possible overnight. Winds 5-10 mph.

Hang in there...a sunny Sunday is ahead! The high on Sunday will be near 32, low around 7 with calm winds. Slight chance of rain/snow in the week ahead on Wednesday and Thursday, with rain/snow expected on Friday.

Heavenly Mountain Resort received 18" of snow overnight, 54" of snow in the last 48 hours. At Sierra-at-Tahoe, 20-35" of snow overnight, 32-73" in the last week. Kirkwood received 21" overnight, 91" in the last seven days. Squaw Valley received 27" overnight, 93" in the last week, and over at Mt. Rose, 14" of snow fell overnight, 50" in the last 72 hours.

As of 8:00 a.m. Saturday the following road controls are in place:

In South Lake Tahoe, Elks Club Drive was closed but as of 8:45 a.m. it is now open.

Highway 50 from Meyers to Placerville: Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. (Four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas). Trucks are MAX requirements.

Highway 50 from South Lake Tahoe to Carson City: Chains or Snow Tires Required

State Route 89N: Closed from Ebright to Bliss State Park. From park to Truckee, Chains are required on all vehicles except passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks under 6,000 pounds gross weight and equipped with snow tires on at least two drive wheels. Chains must be carried by vehicles using snow tires. All vehicles towing trailers must have chains on one drive axle. Trailers with brakes must have chains on at least one axle.

State Route 89S: Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels from Christmas Valley to Hope Valley. (Four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas).

State Route 88: From Woodfords to Pine Grove, except for the Carson Spur - Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. (Four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas). The Carson Spur is closed.

I80: Eastbound 80 is closed at Colfax. Westbound 80 is closed at the NV/CA state line.

State Route 207/Kingsbury: Chains or Snow Tires Required from US 50 junction to juntion with 206 Foothill Road in Nevada.

State Route 431/Mt. Rose: Chains or Snow Tires Required from State Route 28 to Douglas Fir Drive in Nevada.

State Rout 28: Chains or Snow Tires Required from mile post 0.0 in Douglas County to mile post 11.0 in Washoe County. From California State Line to Tahoe City - Chains are required on all vehicles except passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks under 6,000 pounds gross weight and equipped with snow tires on at least two drive wheels.
