Day-long traffic jam over Echo Summit as vehicles leave Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Sunday has been one big traffic jam for travelers trying to head west over Echo Summit. And as it the normal case, when traffic backs up the mapping apps direct drivers to side residential roads, many of which were unplowed and hard to navigate.

As of 7:30 p.m., traffic is still very heavy in Meyers and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is currently working on two accidents, one west of Sierra-at-Tahoe Road and the other east of Strawberry.

There have been spinouts and accidents on all Lake Tahoe roads after two to three feet of snow fell since Saturday. Avalanche control measures have also led to traffic as the road closes when the hillside is blasted.

Another reason for the traffic is the fact that I80 was closed much of the day.
