A foot of snow blankets South Lake Tahoe; Heavenly opens and road controls in place

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is one word to describe Wednesday: SNOW! Winter made its appearance in the Lake Tahoe basin Tuesday and will continue this week as one storm exits and another stops by.

Lake Tahoe Community College is closed for the day. The college will reopen at its normal time after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend on Monday, Dec. 2. The City of South Lake Tahoe offices are open.

The National Weather Service in Reno created a snowfall report at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday(posted above). They said a stronger storm system is expected to bring more precipitation to the Sierra and western Nevada Saturday afternoon through M onday. Hazardous travel is again likely during this time, so plan accordingly.

Heavenly Mountain Resort opened 22 acres of skiing Wednesday, with 4 of 28 lifts open.

I80 was closed for a while overnight and has since opened to passenger vehicles only. Big rigs are being turned at the Nevada state line and Applegate due to continued traction issues over the summit, which cause traffic to snarl.
