Food assistance in South Lake Tahoe through the holidays
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/21/2020 - 3:24pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many people in the South Lake Tahoe area could use some extra help during the holidays, and local sources of free food are available to help ease some needs.
Bread & Broth will be open on Monday, December 21 and 28 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. with bags of food. Also, their Friday food bag operation will not be open on Christmas Day but will resume on New Year's Day, January 1, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. They are located at St. Theresa Grace Hall at 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe.

The Attic Thrift Store is providing free clothing, home goods and toys for all of the clients coming to Bread & Broth’s food giveaways on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall, 1041 Lyons Avenue (one block east of the Tahoe Middle School).
Community spirit surrounds South Lake Tahoe food giveaway
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/27/2020 - 3:21pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the second time in as many weeks, Overland Meat & Seafood Co. of South Lake Tahoe gave away 1,000 pounds of hamburger to the first 500 people to come by the store.
This time, Overland owners Brian and Kim Cohen had other businesses join in the fun.
Grass Roots gave away $10 gift cards, Heart Rock Herb & Spice Co. gave away spice samples, and Safeway at Bijou added two pallets of fresh fruits and vegetables to the mix.
"This is community effort at its finest," said Brian.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The social, nutritional, recreational and educational hub for South Lake Tahoe's senior citizens has been getting a much-needed facelift in their "great room", one which includes new flooring, heat and air, along with new technology and large screen televisions.
A Grand Opening Celebration will be held on Saturday, December 28 and the whole community is invited, both young and old. The Open House will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. A full slate of activities is planned:
LTCC women's soccer team on top of national coaches poll for 4th straight week
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/18/2019 - 7:46amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Community College's Women's Soccer team is on top of the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 NJCAA poll for Division III for the fourth consecutive week. On September 25 they rose to the top spot of the list and haven't left since then.
Fresno City College is currently in the second spot, a team they tied during a September 20 match-up, 1-1. The team the women lost too in last year's state final, Santiago Canyon College, dropped to the twelfth-ranked team.
Free food for South Lake Tahoe youth all summer with Bread & Broth 4 Kids program
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/14/2019 - 1:53pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the third consecutive summer, the St. Theresa Bread & Broth 4 Kids Summer Program will provide weekly food bags for South Lake Tahoe youth until school resumes in August. During the school year more than 2,000 local students receive free or reduced cost meals at breakfast and lunch, but that program doesn't cover weekends or summers and that is where Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) comes in. In the 2018-19 school year, BB4K supplied over 180 bags of food each Friday to local youth and last summer 225 bags of food were given away each week.

Every year for two weeks, instead of driving, Lake Tahoe residents and visitors ride their bikes to work, school, and for fun. Schools, offices, neighbors, friends and individuals can all join in the challenge by logging all trips done on a bike, no matter the distance.
Just by participating in the Tahoe Bike Challenge people will be automatically eligible to win fabulous prizes and cool swag! Two categories to win: Most Total Trips & Most Trips (from June 1-14) and top riders will receive a limited-edition Tahoe Bike Challenge T-shirt.

UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe will be holding an evening of not only culinary fun, but one with free food as they bring together the community, local produce, food and gardening.
On Thursday, April 19, the Soup Night will be held at South Lake Brewing from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Soup will be prepared by South Tahoe High School Culinary Arts Program and the bread will be prepared by Lake Tahoe Community College Culinary Arts Program.

This free summer food program is bringing smiles and excitement to local children as they pick and choose their favorite breakfast, fruits, snacks and dinner foods from the baskets full for food at St. Theresa Grace Hall every Wednesday. The biggest smiles come from the special treats of ice cream, cupcakes or chocolate chip cookies that the Bread & Broth and Vail Resort volunteers give to each child as they finish filling their bags.

LimeBike, the newest in bike riding sharing, will kick off their South Lake Tahoe operations with a BBQ and ribbon cutting on Friday, July 14 at the Ski Run Blvd Farmer's Market from 4:00 p.m. t 5:30 p.m.
The San Mateo based business will have ten bikes prepared for people to try out along the boulevard between Outdoor Gear lab and the farmer's market. They'll have a booth set up with free food and drink, flyers and t-shirts.
Western Nevada College hosting Journey of Hope

Since 2014, Western Nevada College has hosted the group as they make their annual journey across 32 states, 12,000 combined miles of cycling.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District is holding a series of workshops for parents in the community where they can find support both personally and academically.
On Wednesday, March 9 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., all parents are invited to attend the "Helping Parent s ADVANCE Workshop" in the South Tahoe High Student Union.
As the parents participate, there will be free childcare and free K-8 tutoring available, as well as free food, prizes and more.

Lake Baron closed to public as it's stocked with 1,000 pounds of fish for annual derby
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/16/2016 - 8:01amLake Baron in Tahoe Paradise Park will be closed to the public from 2:00 p.m. Friday to 2:00 p.m. Sunday as final preparations are made for the 15th annual Kid's Fishing Derby. They will be stocking the lake with almost 1,000 pounds of catchable and trophy sized trout.
The annual event, for kids up to the age of 16, is provided free of charge by the Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge on Sunday, September 18 from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Free food and prizes for kids as well as a chance to take home prize money for the largest fish caught.
August 27: 36th anniversary of Harvey's Resort bombing
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/27/2016 - 8:22amFor those that were on the South Shore on August 27, 1980, they'll be able to tell you exactly where they were, or what they were doing when law enforcement detonated a bomb that had been left inside Harvey's Resort casino in Lake Tahoe.
Three men planted a bomb containing 1,000 pounds of dynamite inside a machine they delivered to the second floor. Successful landscaper, John Birges from Clovis, Calif., the mastermind behind the bomb, was attempting to extort $3 million from the casino, claiming he had lost $750,000 gambling there.

In the spirit of community, the idea of honoring law enforcement in South Lake Tahoe on August 1 is growing. Jen Bloch, owner of Tahoe Tot Spot, heard what South Lake Tahoe restaurateur Ted Kennedy was doing to honor the men, and women, in blue, and wanted to join in.
Tahoe Tot Spot will be offering free admission for children of law enforcement officers and deputies that day.

Kennedy, who on the ownership team of Base Camp Pizza, California Burger, Azul Latin Kitchen and now, the Lakeside Beach House, shows gratitude on a weekly basis. Those in uniform and teachers get a free meal at any of his four restaurants (police officers, sheriff's deputies, fire personnel, nurses and those on active duty).
"This is to thank them, and show that we appreciate their service," said Kennedy. "They are our local heroes."

Thanks to the Moose Lodge’s generous donation, the 91 folks who came for dinner were served baked salmon with orange sauce, spaghetti with red sauce, a mixed green salad, a lovely strawberry/cantaloupe salad and a wide assortment of desserts. Although heaping servings were doled out during the first serving at 4:00 p.m., 27 diners returned for the 5:00 p.m. “second” serving of this tasty and nutritious dinner.

The Food Bank of El Dorado County, in partnership with California Emergency Food Link, is holding a free Farmer's Market for the South Lake Tahoe community. During their stop in town last month, almost 200 families received food.
On Wednesday, June 24, a truck full of food including fresh produce will be at the American Legion Hall located at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The Food Bank of El Dorado County is have a free Farmer's Market for people in need in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, August 27.
In partnership with the California Emergency Food Link, the food bank is giving away one box of food to each family at the American Legion located at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
