Open House at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

Once a year the public has the opportunity to explore the Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care facility. On Sunday, July 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., they will open their doors to where the wild birds and animals are rehabilitated.
For 40 years the non-profit has been serving wildlife in the Sierra and normally the only people allowed past the front door are the volunteers.
As the group rehabilitates the animals for release back into the wild and this year that includes four bear cubs, three red-tailed hawks, four raccoons, nine great-horned owls, an osprey, a bald eagle, two river otters and more.
Most of the animals can only be seen the groups 18 closed-circuit televisions to prevent over-exposure to humans. Each cage will have a monitor outside so you can better see the wildlife inside.
Trained LTWC volunteers will be on hand to guide everone through the grounds and describe the reasons the various wildlife are at LTWC, and the prognosis for their eventual release back to the wild.
Also on display will be a peak into what the new LTWC compound on Al Tahoe Blvd. will look like.
Retail items will be available for purchase including Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care T-shirts and hats, posters, license plate holders, magnets, as well as LTWC ‘and’ Li’l Smokey lapel pins.
LTWC is a non-profit, tax-deductible organization and donations are also welcomed and appreciated.
The facility is located at 1485 Cherry Hills Circle off of Elks Club Drive in Meyers, just three blocks from where the location of the former Elks Club and current flea market. For more information, call 530-577-CARE (2273).
