Special Meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council – Budget Adoption

A special City Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 1st to adopt the 2014/215 budget. City Council meetings are always open to the public and the agenda is on line.

New interactive science exhibit coming to Lake Tahoe

The Institute of Museum and Library Services awarded $150,000 to the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) to create a new, interactive public exhibit at the Tahoe Science Center, located in Incline Village. The exhibit will merge the results of citizen science with TERC’s new, real-time monitoring network that is being installed around the lake to understand and improve the clarity and health of Lake Tahoe’s shoreline.

Power outage Saturday night from Reno to South Lake Tahoe

Sunday 10:22 a.m. Update: There is an arcing power line in the Bijou area that Liberty Utilities is now working on. A pocket of residents around Herbert Avenue are without power.

A power outage on Saturday night affected over 15,000 customers from South Lake Tahoe through Douglas County to Carson City and Reno.

According to Liberty Utilities, electricity was out briefly for some areas around Carson City and up to 3 hours in South Lake Tahoe. Power went out in South Lake Tahoe at 11:45 p.m. and returned at different times through the night.

Marijuana grow houses becoming a problem in South Lake Tahoe

There are an estimated 500 unpermitted, illegal marijuana grow houses on the South Shore according to local law enforcement. In the city limits, South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler estimates there are 300 houses where marijuana is growing illegally with another 200 in the El Dorado County portion of the South Shore according to SLEDNET’s Matt Underhill. (SLEDNET stands for South Lake El Dorado Narcotics Enforcement Team, a joint drug enforcement task force)

A Trio of Art Exhibits and Opening Receptions Coming to LTCC

Artists and fans of beautiful art have at least three great reasons to visit Lake Tahoe Community College this autumn. Three new art exhibits will be open to the public through December 5, 2014. All three will launch with an Artist’s Reception and talk on Thursday, Oct. 2 starting at 5 p.m.

The entire community is welcome to all three exhibits to meet the artists, ask questions about their process, and enjoy some light refreshments.

Accused arsonist Wayne Huntsman in South Lake Tahoe jail

Wayne Allen Huntsman, the accused King Fire arsonist, is sitting in the El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe awaiting his next court date on October 28, 2014.

Huntsman was arrested on September 17 on felony charges of Arson on Forest land with a Special Allegation of Arson with Aggravating Factors. He was arraigned in Superior Court in Placerville on Friday and transferred to the county jail in South Lake Tahoe. His bail was set at $10,000,000.

Five South Lake Tahoe projects win TRPA's "Best in the Basin" awards

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency announced recipients of its 2013 Best in the Basin awards today. Award winners in the agency’s 24th annual Best in the Basin include remodel, new construction, Best Management Practices, stream restoration and erosion control projects that stand out as examples of the best environmental planning, design and implementation.

California Fire Update: 337 square miles currently burning in 14 fires

So far, 2014 has been a major fire year for the west, from Washington through California. There are currently 14 fires burning in California that have burned a total of 215,486 acres.

The Happy Complex fire in Northern California is currently the largest fire burning, with 130,139 acres having burned since starting on August 11.

The King Fire had burned 76,379 acres as of Friday morning but due to infrared monitors being down the fire figures will be updated on Saturday. It was just 10% contained and started on September 13.

USFS issues forest closures for El Dorado National Forest

The Eldorado National Forest has issued a closure order for public safety in the area impacted by the King fire beginning September 18, 2014, until the fire is declared out. The closure order includes the Desolation Wilderness.

“Under our Unified Command System, our top priorities are fighting this fire and keeping the fire fighters and the public safe, said Crabtree. “We cannot safely fight this fire with intermingled publics. Please stay out of the closed areas until I can reopen them, which I intend to do as soon as possible.”

Pollock Pines man arrested for starting King Fire; Bail set at $10,000,000

Wayne Allen Huntsman, 37. was arrested Wednesday on felony charges of Arson on Forest land with a Special Allegation of Arson with Aggravating Factors. Law enforcement officials held a press conference Thursday at the Cal Fire base in Camino, announcing the arrest.

Huntsman is being held in lieu of $10 million bail.

Arraignment is scheduled for Friday, September 19, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. in Department 7 of the El Dorado County Superior Court in Placerville.

Forest thinning underway near Pioneer Trail and Lake Baron

You may have noticed all of the trees missing from large areas of South Lake Tahoe recently. The U.S. Forest Service has had forest thinning projects going on in several locations around the South Shore in order to reduce forest fire fuels and improve forest health.

25th Annual Lake in the Sky Air Show

The 25th annual Lake in the Sky Air Show at Lake Tahoe Airport in beautiful South Lake Tahoe, California is scheduled for this Saturday, September 20, 2014. The Lake in the Sky Air Show has been described as “the best in the west” by one of its many professional aerial participants.

Learn about new Heavenly Mountain Resort plans at USFS Open House

Heavenly Mountain Resort's proposed Epic Discovery Project will be featured at an open house hosted by the U.S. Forest Service on Thursday, September 18.

The resort wants to expand year-round activities to include zipline and skycycle canopy tours, a mountain bike park, a ropes course, water activities, hiking trails, mountain excursion tours and nature interpretation. Heavenly is also proposing to create a snowcat emergency evacuation route for the gondola line.

Firefighters have put a line around 89% of the King Fire

9/28/14 10:00 p.m. update: 4,420 firefighters and support staff are still on the scene of the 97.099 acre King Fire which is now 89% contained.

After 4 days of precipitation with accumulations of 1-3 inches, fire spread has been halted, however heat remains in the heavier fuels and in the heavy duff sheltered from the rain under the dense timber canopy. As the weather turns warm and dry over the next several days, expect to see an increase in fire activity and smoke production; however spread potential is extremely low, doe to the successful suppression efforts.

LTCC Tapped to Join CA Community Colleges Online Education Initiative

Lake Tahoe Community College has been chosen by the California Community Colleges’ Online Education Initiative (OEI) as one of eight colleges that will participate in the OEI’s full pilot launch, slated to take place from Fall 2014 through Spring 2016. LTCC was selected based on a number of criteria, including its accreditation standing, its well-established online degree programs, and its well-established professional development program to assist faculty with online education-oriented services and course design.

Douglas County names Jim Nichols as new County Manager

Douglas County can now say they have a County Manager, a position that hasn't been filled since the former manager left earlier this year.

Jim Nichols has accepted the position of Douglas County Manager at a pay rate of $172,000. He is expected to begin September 29, 2014.

South Tahoe loses at Spring Creek, Whittel beats Excel Christian

The Whittell Warriors have started their 2014 season much like they ended 2013, winning. The Varsity football team beat Excel Christian on Saturday by a score of 38-14, bringing their record to 2-0.

Senior Jake Sharp scored two touchdowns and carried the ball 14 times for a gain of 63 yards. Freshman Corey Huber scored once, ran for 109 yards on 13 carries. Huber also ran in an extra point and was on the receiving end of another.

Applications being accepted for South Lake Tahoe Citizens Academy

Would you like to learn more about how the City of South Lake Tahoe operates? A free six week academy is being offered so participants can learn more about City government, learn about City projects, how the budget works and much more.

The Academy will be held on consecutive Wednesdays from 5:30-8pm beginning October 8, 2014 and running through November 12, 2014.

Today Kristen Spees announced the details of her congressional campaign’s Off-Road Ride Across Nevada.

Spees' ride is entirely off-road to promote public access to BLM land. The ride starting September 5th will navigate across Northern Nevada beginning in Dayton, to Sand Mountain, Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park and up to Austin, Nevada. Riders on Off-Highway Vehicles are expected to cover more than 350 miles over 3 days to promote public access to BLM land throughout Nevada.

Guidelines for the operation of Bingo games in South Lake Tahoe are to be voted on during the City Council meeting on September 2. In an effort to clean up the city's code, City Attorney Tom Watson has been evaluating and updating all rules in the books, and the Bingo rules are part of this change.

South Lake Tahoe students needed for Teen Court

If you're a student in South Lake Tahoe in grades 8 through 12, you are invited to participate in the juvenile justice system through the county's Teen Court program.

Teens that go through volunteer training will serve as court personnel for real court cases where a minor has admitted to an offense and agreed to be judged by his/her peers.

The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) will hold an open house on Thursday, September 18, 2014, to explain and answer questions about its draft analysis of a proposal from Heavenly Mountain Resort. The resort has a 40 year lease to operate on national forest lands and now wants to expand year-round, non-skiing activities at the Lake Tahoe resort.

17th Annual Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day

Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day is the largest volunteer restoration event in the Lake Tahoe basin. Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are invited to restore trails, stabilize stream banks and plant native plants. Last year 82 volunteers from various organizations participated to help restore Tahoe Paradise Park in Meyers, CA.

This year, volunteers are invited to help restore the watershed habitats that lead to Lake Tahoe.

The stewardship project starts at Tahoe Paradise Park in Meyers at 8 a.m.

Camp Richardson Corral seeks reissue of 20 year permit

The Camp Richardson Corral operates under a U.S. Forest Service Special Use Permit that is up for renewal. As part of the process, the USFS has opened a month long period for comments from the public.

They are asking for input on a proposal to reissue the corral a 20 year special use permit for the operation and maintenance of the corral and outfitting and guiding services.

American Legion and Gold Star Mom withdraw support from local event

American Legion Post 795 has withdrawn all support and endorsement of the Forever Dreams for Veterans program scheduled at MontBleu on September 6, 2014. Gold Star Mom, Patty Smith, mother of Sgt. Timothy M. Smith who was killed in action, has also rescinded all support. The Rose of Love ride from the Carson City Harley Davidson site to the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe has been cancelled.

First woman to swim across Lake Tahoe at age 16, Erline Christopherson, tells her story tonight at library

In 1962, Erline Christopherson was a 16 year old from Lodi, CA who was living her dream of swimming across Lake Tahoe. In 2014, 52 years later, Erline has returned to the site where she set a world record as the first woman to swim across the lake.

She will be sharing her story at the South Lake Tahoe library Wednesday night at 6 p.m. The library is located at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd in South Lake Tahoe.

That is now possible by simply logging on the the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority website and opening your own portal to Tahoe.

"Six live high definition cameras called were installed at various Tahoe South locations with the intent to inspire and engage ,fans to share breathtaking images with the world," according to the LTVA.
