Tahoe Transportation District rolls out fare-free transit

STATELINE, Nev. - The Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) is rolling out zero-fare bus service on the South Shore starting Sunday, April 12.

While they already had plans in place for a free system to help eliminate traffic, the rollout is sooner than expected in order to make travel safer in response to COVID-19 by eliminating fare exchanges between drivers and riders.

V&T Railway ends season this weekend with steam, 150th anniversary and Toast of the Canyon trains

CARSON CITY — V&T Railway will bring its event-filled 2019 season to a close this weekend with a final 150th Anniversary train on Friday, Oct. 11, vintage steam trains on Saturday, Oct. 12 and Sunday, Oct. 13 and a Toast of the Canyon spirits train on Saturday, Oct. 12 following the steam train.

New general manager announced for Kirkwood Mountain Resort

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Vail Resorts has announced the hiring of Matt Jones for their new Vice President and General Manager at Kirkwood Mountain Resort.

Jones has been with Vail since 1998 and has held several positions in Human Resources since that time, most recently as Vice President of Human Resources where he oversaw the Colorado Resorts and employee housing initiatives. He’s also been a member of various boards including the Epic Promise Foundation and Vail Resorts’ Emergency Grants Committee.

Former South Tahoe High Teacher loses cancer battle

Vali Dees, beloved wife and daughter, passed away at her home in South Lake Tahoe this July 7th, 2019 at 6:45 PM. She was attended by her husband, Jeff Davies, and her mother, Helen Valborg, when she finally succumbed to the cancer she had been so determined to overcome. Her death deprives the world and all who knew her of a bright and healing light.

Father John Grace ~ September 18, 1920 - May 4, 2019

Father John Grace, former pastor of Saint Theresa Catholic Church in South Lake Tahoe, passed away on May 4, 2019, at the age of 98. Father Grace had injured himself in a fall while on a walk near his Al Tahoe residence a few days before his death.

He was born September 18, 1920, to John and Cecilia Grace in the small coal-mining village of The Commons, County Tipperary, Ireland. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Catherine (“Rena”) and Maureen. At the time of his death, Father Grace was the oldest priest in the Diocese of Sacramento.

Stephen Bannar ~ 3/18/63 - 12/13/18

On Thursday, December 13, 2018, Stephen Bannar, loving husband and father of Brandon and Allison, passed away at the age of 55. Stephen was born in Camden, New Jersey on March 18, 1963. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1985 and completed his Medical Degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1990. Stephen practiced Orthopedic Surgery for 25 years. On May 18, 1991, he married Barbara Lee Storck. They raised two children Brandon and Allison.

Family Skate Night to help defray costs for local spinal cord injury victim

South Lake Tahoe resident Rocky Beaty has embarked on a long road to recovery after suffering a spinal cord injury while going gymnastics on May 28, 2018 in a local gym. Beaty fractured his C6 and C7 and was flown to Renown where he underwent a four-plus hour surgery, removing bulging discs, fusing his vertebrae, and placing two rods on the front and back of his spine.

We've all most likely had an experience hailing or calling for a cab, but how many have tried that doing that on Lake Tahoe? On Monday I boarded the South Shore Water Shuttle at Lakeside Marina for a round trip to all four of its regular stops, Timber Cove Marina, Camp Richardson Resort & Marina and Round Hill Pines Beach Resort & Marina, and then back to Lakeside.

Presenter Sherry L. Rupert is the Executive Director of the State of Nevada Indian Commission, and the first American Indian woman to be appointed a member of Governor Brian Sandoval’s cabinet. She will share the past and future of this historic institution in Carson City. Established in 1890, the Stewart Indian School was one of the first 25 of hundreds of Indian Boarding Schools instituted across the nation to assimilate American Indian children into mainstream culture. The school was open for 90 years and educated over 30,000 American Indian students in the multi-colored stone structures.

Women's March in South Lake Tahoe draws almost 400

It may have just been planned in the last two weeks, but the 2018 Women's March in South Lake Tahoe drew out 392 women, men and children to join hundreds of thousands of others marching around the country.

"The turnout was phenomenal," said co-organizer Meg Peart. "Its amazing how quickly our community can come together."

Peart and Kelsey Adams took an idea and reached out to the community through Facebook, friends and local news to get people out to walk the just over two mile route from Hard Rock Hotel and Lakeview Commons.

Bruce's Legacy, the underwater search and recovery team from Wisconsin, was at Fallen Leaf Lake recently, searching the water for a missing person. What they found was more than expected when bodies of both a man and woman were recovered.

Underwater ROV locates bodies of man missing in Lake Tahoe and boy in Stampede Reservoir

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of Dan Pham, the man missing in Lake Tahoe after a kayaking trip, has been found by an underwater search team just a few days after they found the body of 11-year-old Marcos Vasquez.

On June 8, 2017, Pham, whose full name is Pham Dan Vu Thanh, called a friend at 9:15 a.m. to tell him he was going kayaking and camping in the Lester Beach area. As of 6:15 p.m. that evening there had been no word from Dan.

South Lake Tahoe teen to ride in Inaugural Parade in Washington

South Lake Tahoe native Emily Cefalu will be riding in the Presidential Inaugural Parade Friday as a member of the Culver Girls Academy Equestriennes.

The 17-year-old senior is the daughter of Paige and Christopher Cefalu of SLT.

Emily is part of the 24-member girls mounted unit who will be participating in their eighth inaugural parade. They will be alongside the 56-members of Culver Military Academy's Black Horse Troop who will be at their 17th inauguration.

'Ski with a Ranger' set to begin at Heavenly Mountain Resort

Tons of new snow has fallen in the Lake Tahoe Basin over the past week, just in time to Ski with a Ranger. The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit invites the public to participate in the free program while skiing and boarding at Heavenly Mountain Resort beginning Friday, January 20, 2017. Tours begin at the top of the gondola every Monday and Friday at 1:00 p.m. The tours last approximately one hour and continue through April 7, 2017, weather permitting.

Structure fire causes major damage to lodge structure at Lake Tahoe's Homewood Mountain Resort

5:00 p.m. update 12/28/16: Homewood Resort at Lake Tahoe will be opening their lifts on Thursday, just one day after a fire destroyed their South Lodge.

"We are expecting to have 'top-to-bottom' skiing and boarding available to our guests," says a message on the Homewood website. "Our team would like to thank the North Tahoe Fire Protection District, Placer County Sheriffs, our community partners and most importantly our amazing employees that are working to get our operations up and running for tomorrow."

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows set November opening date

The higher elevations saw a very small glimpse of winter this week as snow dusted the peaks around Lake Tahoe, but not too small to keep Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows from announcing their opening date for this winter.

They announced today that they'll open between November 11 and 18, earlier than their November 23 opening date last year. The resorts hosted the longest season in 2015-16 by staying open until May 30 with over 41 feet of cumulative snowfall.

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows was voted 2016 Best Ski Resort in North America by USA Today and 10 Best Readers’ Choice.

HIgh fire danger in Lake Tahoe basin Sunday and Monday

Hot and dry weather will continue in the region according to the National Weather Service, but with the warm temperatures and low humidity comes a "Fire Weather Warning."

NWS is forecasting gusty winds and high fire danger on Sunday and Monday and they are urging extreme caution, especially near dry grass and brush.

Gusty winds and waves up to 3 feet will produce hazardous conditions for boating, kayaking and paddle boarding. Calm lake conditions in the morning can quickly turn dangerous once the winds kick up, so remember to always wear your personal flotation device.

Stand up paddle shop moving into old winery with new wine and coffee bar

It was down to the 11th hour, Chris Brackett had to be out of his South Tahoe Stand Up Paddle location and had no place to go with all of his boards. He was in the same situation as Rude Brothers, the bagel and coffee shop that shared the same location. With the building sold and all tenants given notice to move, both businesses needed to relocate.

TTD adds new buses and scheduling system in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe locals and visitors utilizing transit opportunities have seen some recent changes including new buses, lighting, signage and a new scheduling system for those with disabilities and over the age of 60.

The Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) responded to input from the public and added the changes.

New master plan being created for Tahoe Paradise Park

Movie in Lake Tahoe combines snowboarding, surfing and environment

Dr. Clint Purvance named new Barton Health President and CEO

Dr. Clint Purvance will be taking over the helm at Barton Health on November 1, replacing the retiring John Williams who will retire in early 2016 after nine years with Barton Health.

Dr. Purvance has served as Chief Medical Officer for Barton Health for the past eight years. He is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and has practiced medicine at Barton Memorial Hospital since 1999.

Jamie Anderson in Dubai to promote city's action sports

XDubai, the city’s ambassador for action sports, has released a video series featuring professional surfer Sally Fitzgibbons and Olympic gold snowboarder Jamie Anderson paddle boarding, desert hiking, and engaging in wind tunnel inflight in Dubai.

Titled “Lifestyle Sessions,” the videos are meant to highlight Dubai’s outdoor and extreme sporting activities.

XDubai is the group behind videos of “Jetmen” Yves Rossy and Vince Reffet.
Anderson, who’s participated and won 12 medals, described Dubai as a “Disneyland for athletes.”
