South Lake Tahoe Celebration, Parade and Party Being Held For Its Three Olympians

South Lake Tahoe, the tight-knit ski community big on Olympic athletes will honor its three USA team members in a city-wide celebration, Saturday, March 15.

Jamie Anderson, Maddie Bowman, who won gold for snowboarding slopestyle and freeskiing halfpipe respectively, and Hannah Teter who placed fourth in snowboarding halfpipe, will be lauded at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort.

Grand Opening For New Affordable Housing Complex in South Lake Tahoe

What could be the last of its kind for some time in South Lake Tahoe, The Aspens at South Lake is celebrating its completion with a grand opening on Thursday, February 27.

The new affordable housing complex is 48 units and cost about $9.5 million to build. 47 of the units will be assisted units which are based on income needs and will likely be filled by service industry employees and single parents with entry level jobs. The Aspens bring the total number of affordable housing units in South Lake Tahoe to 350.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary's 46th Annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration

Tahoe Douglas Rotary's annual fundraiser, the St. Patrick's Day Celebration will be held for the 46th consecutive year on March 14, 2014 at Harrah's Tahoe beginning at 6 p.m. Enjoy a full Irish feast complete with corned beef and cabbage and tasty desserts as well as unlimited wine and beer tasting, endless silent auction tables as well as dancing. There is also a special hotel rate for the night should you want to enjoy and not worry about driving home.

Olympic Heritage Week Begins in Lake Tahoe

During the winter of 1960, athletes from around the world came to Lake Tahoe to participate in the Winter Olympic Games. The biathlon and cross country events were held in what is now Sugar Pine Point State Park. A celebration of the area's snow heritage begins Saturday with a series of events to showcase makes the region so special.

24 Arrested During Stateline New Year's Celebration

The Douglas County Sheriff's Department reports that the New Year's Eve party in the Stateline area went as expected, resulting in 24 arrests. The charges included assault, affray, domestic battery, disorderly conduct, minor consuming alcohol and civil protective custody. During the downtown party last year there were 14 arrests.

South Lake Tahoe Prepares for New Year's Eve

With a projected 30,000 people at SnowGlobe and another 30,000 at Stateline, local police and sheriff's officers will have their hands full.

70 South Lake Tahoe Police officers, El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies and local CHP officers will be on duty Tuesday in order to ensure all goes smoothly.

Sergeant Josh Adler of SLTPD said they are expecting a smooth New Years celebration due to the previously large group at Stateline being split up with SnowGlobe and the family New Year's Eve event at Heavenly Village. Adler said that there were just a handful of arrests last year.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is making preparations for the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebration at Lake Tahoe starting on Tuesday, December 31st, 2013. Each year upwards of 60,000 celebrants ring in the New Year in the casino core area of Stateline, Nevada.

With the holiday season now in full swing, it’s only appropriate that the Reno Jazz Orchestra (RJO) brings Jazz for the Holidays to Northern Nevada for all to enjoy on December 20, 2013 at The Nightingale Hall - University of Nevada. Nevada Celebrates 149th Birthday With Parade

Today was a state holiday in Nevada in honor of the state's admission into the Union on October 31, 1864. The annual gathering to celebrate the heritage of Nevadans has been marked with a carnival, contests, dinners, dances and other events. The big highlight of the birthday celebration will be the 75th Annual Nevada Day Parade in Carson City on Saturday, October 25.

Halloween Fun in South Lake Tahoe Starts This Weekend

Halloween is always a celebration in South Lake Tahoe and this year is no different. Even though the actual holiday is on Thursday, October 31, the parties and celebrations start in town this weekend. Here is an overview on all that is happening:

Halloween Dance with the Tahoe Dance Band - at the Senior Center on Friday, October 25. The 17 piece dance band will perform big band music, food, drink, costume prizes. 7:30 - 10 pm. $10.

Back Roads - Lake Tahoe to Apple Hill via Highway 4

My daughter and I had been planning our annual Apple Hill trek for several days when I decided to change it up a bit. Since my free time is so rare I figured why not include a visit to our favorite little town Sutter Creek? And then, since we're doing that, might as well throw in a drive down beautiful Highway 4! Since the portion of the road we'll be covering is closed after the first big snow we had to do it! The day was plotted on a map in my head with some verification on google maps. The map said our little trip was going to take 5 hours and 10 minutes and cover 225 miles.

LTCC Mourns Unexpected Death of Tahoe Firefighter, Former Instructor

Lake Tahoe Community College joins the Lake Valley Fire Protection District in mourning the unexpected loss of firefighter paramedic Brandon “Mitch” Underhill. The 34-year-old, known as Mitch, died Sunday, September 29th.

Underhill has been an instructor at LTCC as part of the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy since 2009. He joined the Lake Valley Fire District in 2005, and served the community for just over 8 years in that capacity. He is survived by his wife, two young children, his parents, and his brother and sister.

Street Vibrations Bringing Motorcyclists to Area. 1 Killed, 4 Hurt in Tahoe and Carson Collisons

With thousands of motorcyclists expected for Street Vibrations there is extra caution urged on public roadways. As of noon today there have been 3 accidents involving bikers on the road in Lake Tahoe and Carson City, resulting in 1 death and 4 hospitalizations.

Two people were hospitalized after a crash shortly before 10 a.m. at North Carson Street and Medical Parkway. A man was flown by Care Flight to Renown hospital; the other person was taken by ambulance to Renown.

Inaugural Lake Tahoe Color Themed 5k Run a "Blast"

Bursts of color surrounded the over 100 runners as they participated in the inaugural Tahoe Youth and Family Service's Color Blast Run on Saturday, September 14. The 5k course meandered through the Lake Tahoe Community College parking lot, streets and bike paths. The race name comes from colored cornstarch that is doused over the runners and they pass by strategically placed stations along the course. Once the runners came across the finish line there was a celebration of dancing and lots more color being tossed.

South Tahoe Advocate David Kelly Receives State Recognition

David Kelly of South Lake Tahoe has been recognized by the State of California’s Department of Rehabilitation as one of the “50 Notable People in the Disability Community.”

Celio Ranch Transports Visitors to a Bygone Era

It doesn’t take long to immerse yourself into the history of the Celio Ranch as you walk through the fields and old farm buildings. Spread over 100 acres at the base of Echo Summit near South Lake Tahoe, the Celio Ranch shows what it was like in years gone by.

South Lake Tahoe police make seven arrests July 4 and early Friday

As we do each year, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department bolstered our patrol staffing to meet the emergency response needs of our crowded City during the Independence Day celebration.

There were squads of officers patrolling the beaches, assigned to traffic duties and extra officers assigned to work a variety of areas throughout the City. Although the City was quite full with holiday revelers, the number of calls for emergency police responses was fewer this year than during many past years.

Douglas County authorities report few problems with Lake Tahoe July 4 revelers; 24 arrests countywide

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reports the 2013, 4th of July celebration in Douglas County and around Lake Tahoe went well.

The celebratory crowds in the Stateline, Round Hill and Zephyr Cove areas of Lake Tahoe were large and with exception of a few altercations in the downtown Casino Core area, Nevada Beach and Zephyr Cove Beach, the crowd was relatively well behaved. Motorists were cooperative with the road closures and traffic control required for the fireworks display.

The parade will stage in the parking lot of Big 5 at the Y, and begin traveling East at 10:00 am on Thursday, July 4, 2013. The parade will conclude at the American Legion Post #795 by 11:00 am.

LTCC Vision Session postponed until fall; Memorial services Saturday for Kathy Bluethman and Carl Young

Lake Tahoe Community College’s 2020 Vision Session planned for this Saturday, June 8 has been canceled. The college and community are mourning the loss of several members of our college family.

Out of respect for those who passed and their family members and friends, LTCC is postponing the visioning session until Fall 2013. An announcement with a new date and time for this important session will come soon.

LTCC Writers’ Series celebrates The Kokanee publication with reading from students

Barton Memorial Hospital 'Officially' cuts ribbon after 50 years in South Lake Tahoe

Nearly 50 years ago, on Nov. 23 1963, Barton Memorial Hospital opened its doors in South Lake Tahoe and on Thursday, Jan. 24, Barton Memorial Hospital held an “official” ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate 50 years of service to the community. The event included a speech by the great-grandchild of Bill Barton, the namesake of the hospital and current member of Barton Health’s Board of Directors, Kirk Ledbetter.

Fourteen arrests during Stateline Lake Tahoe New Year's festivities

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reports the New Years Eve celebration in the casino core area of Stateline, Lake Tahoe went as planned with 14 arrests made.

The celebratory crowd seemed no larger than in past years. Highway 50 was closed to vehicle traffic at about 11:00 p.m. for public safety reasons. The celebrants were allowed to flow into the roadway as they celebrated the coming of the New Year. The Nevada side of U.S. Highway 50 was cleared of celebrants at 12:20 am and was reopened to vehicle traffic at approximately 1 a.m. after the crowd peacefully moved off the roadway.
