Turkey Trot and Gobble Wobble raise almost $4K for Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - This year's Turkey Trot and Gobble Wobble were once again successful, this time raising almost $4,000 for the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH).
The City of South Lake Tahoe and TCH were cosponsors of the event and are thanking the community for their support.
“This event just keeps getting better and better and that is thanks in large part to the community support,” said Recreation Superintendent Lauren Thomaselli. “This year's Turkey Trot was one of the best we’ve had and all raised money and donations for some very worthy causes.”

Winners announced at Barton Health's Festival of Trees & Lights

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The designer holiday-themed trees have filled the room all weekend at the Barton Health Festival and Trees & Lights. There is still one day left for the public to view them as the annual event wraps up on Sunday, December 8.
All of the trees are beautiful and it was a tough decision by a group of community judges to come up with winners of five distinguished categories.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe History Museum has transformed into a scene of Christmases past, and they are opening up to the whole community on Saturday, December 14 for the free annual Holidays in History Open House.
The museum opens its doors at 11:00 a.m. Enjoy book store specials, a decorated historic cabin, docent tours, and their special spiced cider, all until 7:00 p.m.
Then, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., join in all the reindeer fun! The party moves over to the SLT Recreation Center gym for an evening of free family enjoyment.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Long lines at the US Forest Service office in South Lake Tahoe on Monday put a dent in the supply of Christmas tree permits, but there are still many left.
Last year the supply was depleted in two weeks but the change in policy to only one permit per family instead of two may have had an effect on the numbers still available.
The USFS-Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit in South Lake Tahoe is open Friday until 4:30 p.m.

5:00 p.m. Update: Expect a snowy night and slow-moving over roads in the Sierra. Chains controls on US50 are now up starting in Cedar Grove, west of Pollock Pines, at Pioneer on SR88, and above Gold Run on I80.
At this hour, traffic is at a standstill on I80 after multiple spinouts and crashes all the way to the California-Nevada state line.
CHP is also reporting some issues on US50 west of Echo Summit with two spots were cars are off the roadway, as well as SR88 near Christmas Valley.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Not wanting to end up without a Christmas tree permit this year, a long line of people surrounded the USFS-Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit building in South Lake Tahoe Monday morning. When the doors opened at 8:00 a.m., the lobby immediately filled and the line continued to grow.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will begin the sale of Christmas tree permits on Monday, Nov. 25, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. Permits cost $10 each payable by cash, check or credit card (though they prefer the quicker transaction of cash).
There is a change to the policy this year - only one permit will be allowed per family or per address, instead of the previous two. They said by limiting permits to one per family, more will enjoy cutting down a tree this year.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It started with a chat a few weeks ago between Tom Davis of the Christmas Cheer Board and Dreu Murin of the Heavenly Village. Tom had told Dreu there was a need for turkeys this holiday season in the South Lake Tahoe community.
Dreu then spoke with Gary Casteel Jr., owner of the Heavenly Village, and a plan for a Village Turkey Drive formed.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - People have been asking for weeks when the popular Christmas Tree permits will be going on sale in Lake Tahoe. Though exact details on all of the locations where the permits will be sold, the will go on sale November 25, 2019.
Last year the permits were sold out in two weeks.
The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will sell the permits on a first-come, first-served basis. Permit holders may choose from a variety of pine, fir or cedar trees up to six inches in diameter (at the base) in designated cutting areas.

Opinion: Walking a tightrope between affordable and unsafe housing

Last week, a local motel owner told guests there would be no housekeeping because they didn’t have enough staff due to the local housing shortage. However, the issue is fast becoming not only one of supply, but also one of quality. Many homes that fit the "local's" price range are older buildings - built in the 1970s or earlier. Just like our roads, some of these older buildings are in a state of disrepair and as we know with our roads, patchwork repairs only last so long.

Recycled water spills into Grass Lake Creek

5.10.19 Update: On Thursday, May 9, 2019, recycled water from a South Tahoe Public Utility District Luther Pass storage tank leaked into Grass Lake Creek. Water samples collected from Grass Lake Creek immediately following the spill showed no change in coliform bacteria, meaning the spill caused no significant impact to water quality. A leak from the overflow pipe inside the tank was the cause of the spill. The tank has been drained and taken off-line until repairs can be made.

The following is the second in a series of stories on being a community that is prepared for wildfire.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Vegetation fires are natural and were normal before policies were created to suppress them for fear of uncontrollable and destructive wildfires as seen in the late 1800s. When some of the first residents arrived in Lake Tahoe between the Gold Rush and Silver Strike, it was common to see just six-seven Jeffrey Pines per acre. Trees in the Tahoe Basin were clear cut to provide the lumber for building mines under Virginia City.
