Wine Walk at Heavenly Village a fundraiser for Christmas Cheer

On Thursday, May 24, Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe will be the seen of a charity wine walk from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

For $20, participants will go to participating stores and get a sample of wine from Carson Road Wineries of El Dorado County. Proceeds go to benefit Christmas Cheer, the year round charity that supplies food and other supplies to those in need.

There will also be food specials at the Village, along with a chance to win great prizes.

Stop by the booth in the middle of Heavenly Village to pay the fee and get your pass to a fun evening.

Katie Hall is Queen of the Mountain, winning Amgen South Lake Tahoe stage for third time

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a great day of cycling for the women racing in the Amgen Tour of California, light winds, mild temperatures and clear skies. They left the Heavenly California Lodge at 11:00 a.m. and the first racer crossed the finish line three hours and six minutes later after a trip through Christmas Valley, Hope Valley, Alpine County and the big climb on Kingsbury Grade.

Katie Hall, 31, of Saratoga, California won the day, but it was a close one as she crossed the finish line 29 seconds ahead of Tayler Wiles.

Historic Tahoe Trout Farm opens for season

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The historic Tahoe Trout Farm in South Lake Tahoe will open for the 2018 season on May 1.

For over 70 years the trout farm has been providing families with the experience of fishing in their ponds and catching their dinner, or lots of dinners, as there is no limit to the number of fish caught.

Author Gage McKinney will share with us the incredibly interesting tale of the hard-rock miners from Cornwall who came to America early in the 1800s to tap the continent’s rich mineral wealth. They were crucial to the California Gold Rush and settled in the mining camps of the Sierra Nevada. Along with their mining skills, they brought their folk music and especially their Christmas carols. Gage will describe the origins of this music, which was composed, performed and enjoyed by mining families, and is preserved today by their descendants.

Schools open, chain controls up around Lake Tahoe

A quick moving storm is leaving behind a few inches of snow around South Lake Tahoe, but not enough to cancel school around the lake. The Winter Weather Advisory is ending at 8:00 a.m. Monday with another 1-3" of snow possible during the day and overnight.

US 50 over Echo Summit - Cedar Grove to Meyers - Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. (Four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas).

Christening ceremony for Ms Lisa, the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue boat

In South Lake Tahoe, the name Lisa Maloff is synonymous with philanthropy. She has earned the name "Angel of Tahoe" through her large donations, including $10 million to Barton Memorial Hospital for their new Robert Maloff Center of Excellence (Wellness and Sports Performance Center) and $5.8 million to Lake Tahoe Community College for the Lisa Maloff University Center. To date, Mrs. Maloff has donated $35 million in the past four years.

Memorial "Face Rat" party for Ronson Sakioka

There will be a memorial day on the slopes in memory of Ronson Sakioka on Friday, April 6 on the face of Heavenly, followed by an after-party in the California Lodge.

The 64-year-old Sakioka was a long time South Lake Tahoe area local. He was killed by a car as he attempted to cross Highway 49 at night during the Victorian Christmas in Nevada City on December 20, 2017.

Heavenly Village Wine Walk to raise funds for Christmas Cheer

The next Shops at the Heavenly Village Wine Walk on Thursday, March 22, will be raising funds for Christmas Cheer All Year. It takes place at shops throughout the village from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Sample wine crafted from Amador County, food specials, and chances to win great prizes at every location.

Check in at the tent in the center of the Village. Cost is $20 per person.

South Lake Tahoe Warm Room to close on Easter Sunday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) Warm Room in South Lake Tahoe will be closing for the season on Sunday, April 1, 2018. They opened on Christmas Eve inside the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church as they had trouble securing a place for the winter.

The trip to Lake Tahoe on Highway 50 and Interstate 80 Friday was not a pleasant experience for most drivers. Multiple accidents, road closures and heavy snow greeted them throughout the day and night. A winter storm warning is in effect for South Lake Tahoe until 10:00 a.m. Saturday.

It is a cold start to the morning Saturday with 13 degrees at 8:00 a.m. The forecast high for the day is 27. Expect snow showers after 5:00 p.m. with scattered snow showers during the day with an additional 1-3" possible, and another 1-3" possible overnight. Winds 5-10 mph.

Chain controls and road closures around Lake Tahoe

If you don't need to go out on the roads around Lake Tahoe today you may want to consider staying home and keeping dry.

With over a foot of new snow Friday morning, crews are working to clear the roadways and area highways have been closed a few times due to collisions, heavy snow and avalanche controls.

First of two storms this week has arrived in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - The first of two storms due to hit Lake Tahoe this week has arrived. This current storm will head out Monday night with the next one due Wednesday through Friday.

Chain controls are up on most mountain roads as of 8:20 a.m. on Feb. 26:

R1 controls: Chains are required - snow tread tires allowed
R2 controls: Chains are required on all vehicles except four wheel drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels

Chain controls remain up and snow continues to come down

The snow has been falling all down in the Sierra, giving residents and visitors a glimpse into a winter that hasn't been even a slight resemblance into the big winter of 2017.

At this point, every seems to be happy with what fell Thursday. Snow totals aren't in from the ski resorts yet since they release them in the morning, but they most likely will be several inches and hovering near the one foot level.

Soroptimists sew dresses for girls around the world

Joining the efforts to give every girl in the world a dress, local members of Soroptimists International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) have been sewing away. 100 dresses were made in South Lake Tahoe during two sewing sessions to send to Cuba, Mexico and other points around the globe.

SITS President Diane Imbach has "Dress a Girl Around the World" as her focus this year, and the members have been participating with sewing parties to fulfill her goals.

Open house for South Lake Tahoe Warm Room

TCH will host the Open House at on February 15, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Warm Room located at 1195 Rufus Allen Boulevard.

Ninety-two different nonprofits recently received cash or product donations from Vail Resorts through their EpicPromise grant program. The beneficiaries all serve communities around Northstar, Kirkwood Mountain and Heavenly Mountain resorts.

South Lake Tahoe Warm Room report card - A+; Volunteer training next week

The Tahoe Coalition for Homeless (TCH) made a presentation to the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) board members Tuesday, updating them on the Warm Room, and how things have gone since opening in their new home January 1, 2018.

Elderly man battered by unknown suspects at Gardnerville Walgreens

Two suspects are being sought for battering an 89-year-old man at Walgreen's in Gardnerville on Christmas Eve at approximately 7:30 p.m.

The suspects were driving a black Dodge pickup truck with unknown license plates. One of the suspects is described as a Causasian male 20-30 years old with a beard.

The elderly victim initially declined to report the incident but recently came forward and is working with Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) to find the pair.

DCSO has information that a female filmed the incident on a cell phone.

SnowGlobe wrap up: Global attention, donations, the environment and fields

As the tents are taken down, the stage removed and all other components of SnowGlobe disappear for another year, an evaluation of the Community Play Field and other aspects of the seventh annual event in South Lake Tahoe are being made. There may be negatives to the popular event that draws in 20,000 people a day, there are also many positives to be celebrated.

There is more to the three-day festival, SnowGlobe, than music and crowds, a side of the event many aren't aware of.

South Lake Tahoe nonprofits benefit from STAR; $15,000 given away

The South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts (STAR) donated $15,000 this holiday season to three community organizations, with Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, Christmas Cheer, and Live Violence Free each receiving $5,000.

STAR is comprised of Edgewood Companies, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe, Harrah’s/Harveys Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel, Lakeside Inn and Casino, MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa, and Vail Resorts. The companies work collaboratively on community economic and sustainability issues, including a charity component.

Free recycling of Christmas trees in South Lake Tahoe

Weekly residential customers of South Tahoe Refuse and Recycling in Nevada and California can now get rid of their Christmas trees through their free curbside recycling program.

From December 26, 2017 through January 8, 2018, place the tree out on normal trash pick-up days for pick up.

To have them pick up trees, make sure the following are done:

Cut tree into six-foot lengths.
Remove tinsel, lights, nails and stands from your tree.
Flocked trees are not accepted as they cannot be recycled into compost.

From homeless to housed, EDSO Homeless Outreach Team is making a difference

"Instead of trying to find a way to eliminate the homeless, we now have the ability to change homelessness with a new approach - and it is working," said El Dorado County Sheriff's Deputy Chris Macras.

More terrain opening at Lake Tahoe resorts

With no storms are on the horizon and snow-making operations ramped up, both Heavenly Mountain Resort and Northstar California have unwrapped more terrain for holiday skiers and riders, and they are joined by other area resorts with plenty to do for holiday visitors.

Above average temperatures, and no snow, in Lake Tahoe forecast

Abundant mid and high clouds and periods of gusty winds in the high Sierra are expected through the weekend, leaving Lake Tahoe with party sunny conditions for Christmas. Abundant mid and high clouds and periods of gusty winds in the high Sierra are expected through the weekend.

A very weak system is passing through Northeastern California and Northern Nevada next week, and with it comes a very slight chance of snow coming into the Lake Tahoe Basin, but more precipiation will be staying near the Oregon border.

South Lake Tahoe man hit and killed in Nevada City

A South Lake Tahoe man was killed Wednesday night after being struck by a car in Nevada City.

Ronson Sakioka, 64, was attending that community's Victorian Christmas and was attempting to cross Highway 49 when he was struck by a Honda Pilot driven by a Nevada City resident. The driver did not see Sakioka according to California Highway Patrol Sgt. Brian Waughn.

Sakiok was flown to Roseville where he died.

Waughn said the driver and passenger of the Honda were not injured, and no charges are pending at this time. He says drugs and alcohol were not a factor with the driver.

Warm Room in South Lake Tahoe opens on Christmas Eve

There will be two homes for the Warm Room this winter, and the first one opens on Christmas Eve at 7:00 p.m.

From December 24 - December 31, 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) will open the Warm Room at the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church located at 2733 Lake Tahoe Boulevard. Access to the room will be through the lower parking lot in the back of the church, not through the front door.

"We appreciate the support of the local faith community for rallying behind our common missions of service," said the Coalition.

Animal shelter empties right before Christmas

If you were planning on adopting a pet in South Lake Tahoe for a Christmas gift, you're out of luck this year as the last adoptable pet at the El Dorado County Animal Services Shelter has been adopted.

Felix, a five-year-old purebred Bengal, was the last pet left at the shelter on Tuesday. By Wednesday, he had found a new home.

Emptying out the shelter is not uncommon at Christmas as many find the perfect gift among the animals being housed there.

The shelter is located at 1120 Shakori Drive off of State Route 89 in Meyers. Their phone number is (530) 573-7925.

El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies deliver food to families

Christmas is a little brighter this Christmas for ten South Lake Tahoe area families who received a box full of food from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) and Blue Shield of California.

The El Dorado Hills based insurance company paid for the food for families throughout the county, and the deputies delivered them.

"It felt really good. I was glad we could do something like this, especially this time of year," said Deputy Vince DeLeon who has been with the Sheriff's Office for 17 years and helped do the deliveries.

Thran's Flowers and Lake Valley Fire give 10 families a Christmas tree

Ten local families will have a merrier Christmas after Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD), with the help of Katie Long of Thran's Flowers, made sure they had a decorated tree set up in their homes.

Captain Chuck Malone and Firefighter/Paramedic Dusty LaChapelle delivered the trees and, according to LVFPD, were delighted to help deliver and were overjoyed to see the smiles on the faces of the families that received the trees.

Thran's Flowers donated the trees, stands, lights and ornaments.

"Angel of Tahoe" Lisa Maloff celebrates Christmas with local youth

Christmas was made very special for 100 South Lake Tahoe children on Saturday, December 16, 2017 when philanthropist Lisa Maloff joined Tahoe Youth and Family Services (TYFS) in ringing in the holidays with a special celebration that won’t soon be forgotten.

Earlier this month, Mrs. Maloff made a generous donation of $75,000 to the agency that serves the youth and families South Lake Tahoe, Douglas County and Alpine County. Mrs. Maloff asked TYFS to hold a very special Christmas party so she could spread some holiday cheer and create magical memories for our local children.

Record number of homeless Carson City kids shop during Holiday With a Hero

The 14th annual Holiday With a Hero campaign culminated Wednesday in Carson City at Walmart after months of fundraising. At least 240 homeless children from across the Carson City School District met with Santa Claus before being paired with first responder heroes for a Christmas shopping spree.

South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge donates 50 boxes of food to local families

For seven years the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge 1632 has supplied boxes of food supplies for local families in need, and this year will be no different.

This week, members of the lodge will deliver 50 decorated boxes, each packed full of a ham, vegetables, canned goods, pasta, potatoes, bread, tortillas and everything else needed to feed a family a big holiday meal, and then more for leftovers.

This year's recipients will be selected by the Family Resource Center.

Winter Weather Advisory for Lake Tahoe: 3-5" snow possible at lake level

It most likely won't be a white Christmas in Lake Tahoe, but snow is headed to the Sierras this Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. It is a quick moving storm but has a chance to leave behind the much-needed snow. Christmas Day is expected to be sunny and cold, with a high of 39, low around 12.

Plan on slippery road conditions during the morning commute Wednesday from Lake Tahoe to Reno and the Carson Valley. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are forecast for lake level, with up to 10 inches expected above 7000 feet.

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless one step closer to opening Warm Room

After meeting with the City, Lake Tahoe Unified School District, police, neighbors and other interested parties, the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) is one step closer to opening a warm room for the winter in South Lake Tahoe and could be open by January 1, 2018.

Polar Express Train a holiday treat for all ages

One thing was evident as the special Polar Express Train departed the depot, you don't have to have kids with you to enjoy the annual holiday favorite on the historic V & T Railroad.

For eight years V & T has held the Polar Express during the Christmas season. Tickets normally disappear as quickly as they're posted for sale, but this year organizers are trying something new to give more people a chance to enjoy the experience.

Beach Retreat turns into Winter Wonderland

The Beach Retreat in South Lake Tahoe is not your normal lake front hotel this season. It has been transformed into something from the North Pole. Walk through the grounds and look at their lights and holiday decor that cover every inch of the resort and stay on display until mid-January. All Winter Wonderland events are family friendly, and some are even pet-friendly. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all events.

Letter: LTVA and STR thank community for food and toy donations

For the fifth year, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) and South Tahoe Refuse & Recycling (STR) teamed up to benefit Christmas Cheer All Year with “drive and drop” at LTVA’s California Visitors Center and curbside collection on regular garbage pick-up days.

Once again we were overwhelmed by the generosity of our South Shore community. 160 pounds of food and 85 toys were collected.

Thank you to all the individuals and businesses who participated in making the holidays a little brighter for those in need.

Corvette stuffed with toys for local children goes through South Lake Tahoe

For the second straight year, a stuffed Corvette made its way through South Lake Tahoe to deliver toys and food for kids to Christmas Cheer.

Bill Kirschner, at the wheel of his 2017 Grand Sport, gathered the donated toys and other items from other Lake Tahoe Corvette Club members and community members. Christmas Cheer will now pass them on to local children in need of some extra holiday cheer.

Elves stop by the Children's Memorial Tree

Santa's Elves were at it again this year in South Lake Tahoe! They visited the South Lake Tahoe Children's Memorial tree for the fifth straight year, leaving behind signs of Christmas with stockings and garland.

There is a stocking at the tree for every child who is memorialized there.

The memorial was created 26 years ago when tragedy struct the local community when South Tahoe High students Rory Hrbacek, Sandy Haynes, and Casey Wells died in an vehicle accident on Pioneer Trail.
