"Coffee With a Cop" celebrated all week in South Lake Tahoe; First Responder Friday too

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - National Coffee With a Cop day may be on October 2, but the Starbucks at the "Y" in South Lake Tahoe is going to celebrate the day all week long....and it won't be just for cops.

From open to close, the Starbucks located at 1064 Emerald Bay Road will offer free coffee and pastries to law enforcement and fire fighting personnel, with free coffee for those stopping by to chat. On Monday, some of the officers even stepped behind the counter to make some coffees for patrons.

Community Toy Drive at South Lake Tahoe American Legion

Washoe County Sheriff's Office hosts National Coffee with a Cop Day in Incline Village

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office added a third location for this year’s Coffee with a Cop Day in order to provide the public a greater opportunity for a one-on-one conversation with Sheriff’s Office executive staff and supervisors.

The new location is I.V. Coffee Lab, 907 Tahoe Boulevard in Incline Village. Chief Deputy Greg Herrera and Patrol Captain Don Gil will be available to answer questions, address concerns, or just casual conversation from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2019.

Soroptimists of South Lake Tahoe hold annual "An Evening of Food, Beer and Wine Tasting"

Spots still available for Suicide Awareness Walk in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Signs highlighting suicide awareness have been placed around the campus of Lake Tahoe Community College, all in preparation for the third annual Awareness Walk: Emily's Walk for Hope on Saturday.

Walk organizer Lisa Utzig Schafer of the Suicide Prevention Network got the signs up in time for the college's new student celebration. The group is inviting the community to participate in the walk that focuses on remembering those lost to suicide and to help end the stigma surrounding suicide.

Community raises over $1,000 for SOS Outreach at Tahoe Chamber event

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – A recent Tahoe Chamber Connect for a Cause raised funds for SOS Outreach, a youth development non-profit that uses year-round, outdoor sports to engage underserved students in long-term mentor based relationships.

They gathered with community members at Revive Coffee & Wine and enjoyed appetizers, local beer and wine, raffle prizes, and live music from Bond Collins while raising $1,050 for SOS Outreach.

70th Anniversary of the Wagon Train through South Lake Tahoe Sunday

South Lake Tahoe Farmers' Market starts June 4

Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School 1st grader "Principal for a Day"

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It isn't every day that 7-year-old Rocco DeFranco begins his day with a ride to Freel Perk for a cup of hot chocolate with Principal Joe Dameral before heading to Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School (LTESM) to begin his day.

And that was just the beginning of a day that wasn't a normal one for the first grader.

During the school's recent Spring Fling Pasta Dinner fundraiser, Rocco bid on an interesting silent auction item to be Principal for a Day. He spent his savings of $180 on that special day and Rocco was able to collect his prize on May 3.

Lake Valley Fire Protection District hosting annual Easter Egg Hunt

37th annual Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe Crab Feed & Prime Rib

The Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe is hosting their 37th annual Crab Feed and Prime Rib Dinner on Friday, March 8, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. at Harrah's Tahoe.

Tickets purchased by February 25 are $60 and includes the Harrah's self-parking fee. Tickets purchased after that date are $65 and kids 12 and under are $25.

Column: Simple Ways to Live Happily

I was recently watching the movie Castaway. This time, as I watched, I thought about how it was filmed. As the movie begins, Tom Hanks’ character has a bit of a belly. As the story progresses he becomes thinner and more muscular. I assume the effect was created by filming in reverse; he began as thin and muscular and gained the weight afterward. I began thinking about how easily we can change when we put our minds to it.

The Warm Room is the overnight emergency shelter we operate each winter to give our homeless neighbors respite from the worst of the winter weather. This year the Warm Room is located at 1201 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe, next door to Ernie’s Coffee Shop.

South Lake Tahoe man jailed after three alleged burglaries of hotel supplies

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe man is behind bars after being charged with three different burglaries of the Deerfield Lodge and possession of methamphetamines.

31-year-old Johnathan Adam Towne was arrested on December 16 after allegedly stealing $100 worth of towels and coffee pods on November 28 and $300 in sheets, towels, robes and toilet paper on December 8. On December 15 he was caught inside a room by hotel guests where he allegedly was stealing more coffee pods and hotel candy.

Annual Christmas Bird Count in Lake Tahoe Sunday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is widely regarded as the largest and oldest citizen science project in the world. Each year, from December 14 through January 5, tens of thousands of volunteers across the county head out into the winter to count birds for a day. This tradition goes back to 1900, and in the intervening years, these birders have built a database on bird populations that is unmatched by any other wildlife census.

Sierra-at-Tahoe opening sooner than expected

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With snowfall forecast at the higher elevations of Lake Tahoe in the feet and not inches and a good base from recent storms, Sierra-at-Tahoe has announced they will be opening for the 2018/19 season this Friday.

Sierra will have three lifts and one surface lift scheduled to operate, conditions permitting. They are scheduled to spin Grandview Express, Nob Hill and Easy Rider Express, as well as Magic Carpet. Sierra Snowsports School will be offering adult and children’s lessons, and snowplay at Blizzard Mountain will be open for everyone to enjoy.

Heavenly and Northstar celebrate opening day in Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly Mountain kicked off it’s opening day Friday with the Gondola and Tamarack Express spinning at 9:00 a.m. Skiers and riders enjoyed their first taste of the slopes on California Trail and Tamarack Return.

There was a pre-opening celebration at the base of the Gondola in South Lake Tahoe at 8:00 a.m. Those early risers enjoy music by a DJ, fresh coffee, hot chocolate, and donuts to stay toasty. The rest of the day had live music, ski and snowboard gear giveaways, group photos and food.

Election season can be an exciting time of year with anticipation of the possibilities, but this year in South Lake Tahoe election season is full of negativity that has pitted neighbor against neighbor. One year ago I wrote an editorial "Use the election to create a community of collaboration and teamwork," and today I urge continuance of community, collaboration and teamwork.

Customers going crazy over new bakery in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's a dream come true for Christine Smith.

Christine and her husband Williams have opened Crazy Good Bakery and Cafe inside the old Grass Roots Natural Foods store and the community response has been, well, crazy.

The life-long visitor to Lake Tahoe moved from Pacifica, California to South Lake Tahoe seven years ago with her husband and took the leap to open a bakery six months ago when they signed the lease at the building at the "Y" at 2040 Dunlap Drive.

Two upcoming movie premiers to raise funds for Sierra Avalanche Center

Reef's Run for Hydrocephalus Awareness in Lake Tahoe Sunday

A 2.5-mile fun run (and stroll) will be held on the South Shore Sunday, September 9 to raise awareness of Hydrocephalus, a condition most have never heard of yet it affects over one million people in the United States.

Runners (and walkers) will start at Shoreline of Tahoe on Kahle Drive in Stateline and end at Round Hill Pines Beach Resort. The cost is $40 for those 15 and older, $20 for kids 14 and under. Those running the course will start at 8:30 a.m., and walkers/strollers start at 8:45 a.m.

Costumes and tutus are encouraged, as well as the wearing of "Hydrocephalus Blue."

Emily’s Walk for Hope was founded last year by longtime local, Susan Alessi who lost her daughter Emily Ann Alessi to suicide in 2014. The purpose of this walk is to honor her life, to remember those around us lost to suicide and to help end the stigma surrounding suicide.

Holiday shopping fair to raise funds for Juvenile Services Council

Get a jump on holiday shopping at the Juvenile Service Council (JSC) Holiday Shopping Fair on Saturday, November 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Lake Tahoe Paint and Sip.

There will be a variety of items from crafters and artisans, as well as refreshments. The Knights of Columbus will be providing free coffee and munchies, and beer, wine and soft drinks will be available for purchase.

The JSC would like to thank Dawnda Smith for donating the business for the event.

Lake Tahoe Paint and Sip is located in the Ski Run Marina, 900 Ski Run Blvd., near the Riva Grill.
