Zephyr Cove Elementary and Whittell High schools seek donations for reopening

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - The Zephyr Cove Elementary Parents Club and Whittell Boosters are reaching out to the community for support in the safe reopening of the two Douglas County Lake Schools on August 31.

Both of the schools will begin the 2020/2021 school year on Aug 31 with in person, daily instruction utilizing social distancing and other safety protocols.

South Lake Tahoe schools to reopen August 31 with distance learning

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Trustees voted unanimously to start the school year August 31 in the first of a four phases - Distance Learning.

WNC and Douglas County schools on delayed opening Monday

All Douglas County schools will be on a delayed start on Monday, December 2. Schools at both the lake and in the valley will start 90 minutes later than normally scheduled.

Western Nevada College in Carson City, including the Child Development Center. The campus will open at 11:00 a.m. All classes before that time are canceled. Jump Start students taking classes at a high school should refer to the high school for closure/delay information. The Fallon campus will open at 8 a.m.

At this time no other schools have announced delays.

Douglas County Commissioners to discuss end to monthly meeting in Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - Currently, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners meet once a month at Lake Tahoe, but if Commissioner John Engels gets his way, this week's meeting will be their last at the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority (LTVA) building.

They have been meeting at the lake on the third Thursday of the month, but Engel's presentation will suggest this meeting take place in Minden just as their other three monthly meetings do.

Tahoe Douglas Fire raises funds to award scholarship to Douglas High student

ROUND HILL, Nev. - Every Labor Day, the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) holds a pancake breakfast to support local students in their quest for higher education, and in particular in the field of public service.

They serve Douglas County at Lake Tahoe from the top of Kingsbury Grade to the top of Spooner Summit. This year they chose to invest in the Douglas High School graduating class of 2019 and awarded Alexa Moss with their annual scholarship.

Many of their employees and retirees reside in the valley and have raised their families there.

Facebook video leads to arrest of two juveniles in Douglas County on battery charges

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Video footage found on Facebook of a fight at a Gardnerville Ranchos home has led to the arrest two juveniles on charges of battery, affray (an instance of fighting in a public place that disturbs the peace), and destruction of property.

On September 3, 2019, at 3:15 p.m., deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) were dispatched to the area of Wagon Drive in the Gardnerville Ranchos area of Douglas County for a fight in progress. Upon arrival, the deputies discovered one of the involved subjects had what they called "obvious injuries."

Whittell HIgh School and Zephyr Cove Elementary get new principal

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - Both Douglas County schools at Lake Tahoe are going to start off the new school year with a new principal, Shawn Lear.

During Tuesday's school board meeting, Lear's hiring appeared on their consent agenda. It was approved, making him the principal of both Zephyr Cove Elementary School and George Whittell High School in Zephyr Cove.

Schools open for Lake Tahoe Unified students, Tahoe Truckee closed, Douglas on delay

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It is NOT a snow day for students of Lake Tahoe Unified School District in South Lake Tahoe, but other students are off on Wednesday, February 27.

Tahoe Truckee Unified School District on the North Shore is closed.

For Douglas County schools at the lake, start time is a 90-minute delay. School buses will stop at main bus stops only for all lake schools (ZCES, GWHS) 90 minutes later than regularly scheduled.

Incline Village schools are on a two-hour delay and will not be the normal early release.

It's a Snow Day for many area schools

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During the winter that keeps on giving. local students have already had more than an average number of days off of school due to snow.

For Lake Tahoe Unified on the South Shore, students will not be going to school Tuesday, their sixth so far this year. The closed schools due to the "blizzard and Extremely low visibility."

Tahoe Truckee Unified School District on the North Shore is also closed Tuesday.

Incline Village schools will hold a Digital School Day.

Douglas County Schools at the Lake (Zephyr Cove Elementary and Whittell High) are closed.

South Lake Tahoe schools, including college, are closed Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District get to start their winter break a day early as they will have a Snow Day on Friday, February 15.

In an announcement Thursday, Christy Blach, the LTUSD transportation supervisor said the extreme weather this afternoon and in the forecast for tomorrow led them to the decision for the safety of our students and staff.

All LTUSD schools will be closed next week for Presidents Holiday Break. Schools will resume a regular schedule on Monday, February 25th.

Snow Day Monday for South Lake Tahoe students

Due to heavy snowfall this weekend, all schools in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District will be closed on Monday, February 11 to allow the district, city, county, and state snow removal crews time to make roadways safe for students and staff to get to and from school.

Lake Tahoe storm closes college and schools

The blizzard warnings in the Lake Tahoe basin have prompted school officials to close schools, or in the case of Douglas County, put them on late start.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District is on a Snow Day. All Schools Will be CLOSED today due to the Blizzard Warning issued by the National Weather Service.

DCSO Deputy Duffy selected as Grand Marshall for Carson Valley Days parade

Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy Teresa Duffy will lead the 107th annual Carson Valley Days parade as the Grand Marshall. The theme of the parade and festival is "A Salute to First Responders."

The Carson Valley Active 20-30 Club is organizing the event which runs from June 9 to June 11. The club wanted to raise awareness, celebrate, honor and, most importantly, say thank you to the first responders of Douglas County, those who protect the community on a daily basis.

Last day of school announced for Douglas County Schools; LTUSD waiting on State

Douglas County School District (DCSD) now knows when the last day of school will be for their schools both at the lake and in the valley, but Lake Tahoe Unified District (LTUSD) is waiting on word from California if their seven day waiver was accepted.

The State of Nevada let DCSD know that most of their students wouldn't have to make up any of the days of school missed during this winter's snow storms. The lone exception was George Whittell High School in Zephyr Cove. Their students had to attend school on Friday, March 24 to make up an extra snow day.

Douglas County schools at the lake are open but starting 90 minutes late and students will be picked up at main stops only.

More schools will be having a snow day on Monday. Zephyr Cove Elementary and Whittell High School just announced their closure. The other Douglas County Schools in the valley will be on a two-hour delayed start.

Up at Tahoe Truckee School District, they are watching snow and road conditions and will make their decision at 4:00 a.m. Monday morning.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District on the South Shore already announced their snow day for January 23.

Incline Village schools will also be closed and all other Washoe County schools are on a two-hour delays.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District has canceled school on Tuesday, January 10 due to blizzard conditions, extending the two-week break another day.

Lake Tahoe Community College is closed. Sierra Nevada College is closed.

Both Douglas County Schools at the lake, Zephyr Cove Elementary and George Whittell High School are closed. Jacks Valley Elementary School in the valley is closed due to flooding but all other County schools are open.

South Lake Tahoe schools closed Monday due to flooding

6:53 p.m. Sunday update - Lake Tahoe Community College will also be closed Monday, January 9. Douglas County Schools have changed their original plan and all schools will be closed.

Truckee Tahoe Schools will be evaluated at 4:00 a.m. Monday, then a message will be sent out by 4:30 a.m. if closed.

All Washoe County Schools, including Incline Village, will also be closed on Monday.

Plans for Lisa & Robert Maloff Athletic Facility at Whittell High School to be unveiled

The public is invited to see the proposed plans for the new athletic facility for Whittell High School at the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Center on Tuesday, December 12 at 3:30 p.m. during a meeting of the Douglas County School Board.

Lisa Maloff donated $3 million to put in a new football field, six-lane track and new concession building at the high school on Warrior Way in Zephyr Cove, Nev.

Plans created by RO Anderson Engineering will be unveiled during a presentation at the board meeting.

LTUSD School Board: Immunizations, pay raises, improvements and Nevada student plan

The agenda for the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Education on Tuesday, March 8 is a full one. Board members will be addressing the new state law concerning immunizations, new lights for the soccer field at South Tahoe Middle School, a conditioning room and new flooring at South Tahoe High, student privacy, finances, a 4.5% raise for employees, and discuss a tuition agreement with Douglas County Schools. The meeting begins at the District Office at 5:00 p.m. with closed session, with the public portion beginning about 6:00 p.m.

Carson City schools were already set to be closed today due to a staff development day. Teachers will be reporting to class, but not students.

The first wave of the storm coming to Lake Tahoe had warm temperatures, rain and wind, but because of what is forecast later in the day Thursday, Douglas County schools at the lake are closed.

Lake Tahoe Unified Schools, which cover the south end of the lake, are open. There is a chance that after-school programs will be closed but that decision will be made later in the day.

Whittell High School Parents Upset With Planned Cuts

Coming on the heels of the announcement by U.S. News & World Report that their school was nationally ranked and placed as the 2nd best high school in Nevada, planned cuts at Whittell High School were unveiled at the May 9th Douglas County School Board Meeting.

Several concerned parents attended the last meeting and many more are planning on making the drive to Minden for this week's meeting. The parents have taken their mission to social media with starting the Facebook page: Concerned citizens and parents for Whittell High School.
