Countdown to American Century Championship:"The fans are great!"

In just over a week, the eyes of sports fans will be on Lake Tahoe as the 27th annual American Century Golf Championship opens at Edgewood Tahoe. The field of 86 celebrities from sports, television, music, stage, screen, politics, Nascar, and the US Marine Corps are all headed to the South Shore July 19-24 to play.

"The golfers anticipate getting the invitation letter to play," said Former NFL Head Coach and ESPN Analyst Herm Edwards. "We get excited at that moment."

Pyrotechnic crews finish up preparations for Lake Tahoe fireworks show

Tens of thousands of people will be enjoying the Lights on the Lake fireworks show over Lake Tahoe Monday, most of them unaware of the hundreds of hours of work put into their enjoyment.

"We love out job," said Zambelli Fireworks Western Region Project Manager John Hagan. "We can use explosives to make people happy."

Zambelli is the company hired to produce the 25 minute pyrotechnic show over Lake Tahoe on July 4, starting at 9:45 p.m.

Dedication of latest phase of Lake Tahoe Bikeway

Another section of what is becoming the premier bikeway circling Lake Tahoe was dedicated in a ceremony behind Lakeside Inn on Wednesday. This new shared-use trail connects to Rabe Meadow with access to Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines Resort.

"The TTD (Tahoe Transportation District) is pleased to have been part of this project," said Carl Hasty, District Manager of TTD. "Bike trails are thought of as a 'nice to do' project in many areas, but in Lake Tahoe they are important."

Whittell and South Tahoe golfers headed to State Golf Tournament

The 2016 NIAA Divisions I-A & III State Boys Golf Championships will be in Pahrump, Nevada starting May 17, and there will be seven golfers from the South Shore on the course.

Whittell's golf team qualified to be one of three teams from the Northern Division to head to State. Golf Coach Steve Maltase will be taking Colin Buchholz, Palmer Chaplin, Alex Byer, Jonathan Duffy, Matt Davis, and Nic Buchholz to Pahrump after their qualifying at Edgewood Wednesday. They will be playing at the Mountain Falls Golf Club both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Historic estate near Edgewood sells for $8.5 million

A home designed by Julia Morgan on the shores of South Lake Tahoe near Stateline has sold for $8.5 million, making it the largest residential home sales in the city in nearly a decade.

Morgan, best known as being the architect behind Hearst Castle in San Simeon, designed two homes in Lake Tahoe. The one on the South Shore, named Twin Pines, was built in 1928 and includes a 2,750-square-foot main house with an 864-square-foot guesthouse. The home sits on 1.65 acres with more than 180 feet of sandy beach, a pier, and buoy.

90 players committed to playing in Celebrity Golf Championship

Charles Barkley, Justin Timberlake, and Steve Kerr and Andre Iguodala of the Golden State Warriors lead a group of 90 sports and entertainment stars coming to South Lake Tahoe for the 27th annual American Century Championship, July 19 – 24, 2016. Many were hoping to see Steph Curry on the list, but with the Olympic Games in Rio just after the tournament, speculation is that he had to skip the stop in Tahoe.

Prescribed burns to continue in Lake Tahoe basin

Weather permitting, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service have scheduled prescribed fire operations again this week, starting April 25.

East Shore: Near Spooner Summit, Camp Galilee and on Kingsbury Grade near Edgewood Drive.

South Shore: Near Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sawmill Road, Panther Lane near South Tahoe High School, off Highway 89 near Spring Creek, and off Santa Claus Drive and West River Parkway near Christmas Valley.

Prescribed burns on south and east shores of Lake Tahoe this week

Spirit of Spring fundraiser to support Boys & Girls Club Lake Tahoe

29th Annual Booster Club Golf Tournament

Timothy Roger Stoll June 16,1938- February 12, 2016

Dr. Timothy Stoll died suddenly of galloping pneumonia on February 12, 2016 at the age of 77.

Dr. Stoll, an icon of the Tahoe area, practiced dentistry for over 50 years in both South Lake Tahoe and Minden.

Sting and Peter Gabriel making stop at Harvey's Outdoor Arena

Sting and Peter Gabriel just announced their 2016 tour, Rock Paper Scissors, and one of those stops will be in South Lake Tahoe as part of the popular Summer Music Series at Harvey's Outdoor Arena.

The two iconic artists will bring their once in a lifetime concert to the south shore on Friday, July 15, 2015, a week before the American Century Golf Championship at Edgewood Tahoe.

Tickets will go on sale on Ticketmaster Monday, January 25.

They are the second group to confirm a stop at Harvey's. Country music star Keith Urban will be performing Friday, July 29.

LTVA uses interactive tools to help visitors plan their Lake Tahoe vacations

With an estimated three million visitors to the Lake Tahoe Basin annually, there is a lot of vacation planning occurring, and the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority has made it easier for those traveling to the South Shore.

Six months ago they launched "Explore Your Trip," a itinerary planning tool on their website that helps travelers plan their trip based on what they like to do, what their budget, what they like to each and many other categories.

Remaining residents asked to move; Tahoe Beach Club ready to break ground

The remaining tenants at the Tahoe Shore Mobile Home Park at Stateline, Nev., have been given 90 days to find new housing now that owners of the Tahoe Beach Club will be breaking ground on a 20-acre luxury lakefront condominium project.

This announcement should come as no surprise to the people who own or rent the mobile homes since they were originally told in 2003 that they would have to move so the project could be built.

The Tahoe Beach Club has been 14 years in the making and now it looks like the first shovels will be moving dirt at the new lakeside development by June, 2016.

Loop Road project the topic at South Lake Tahoe Chamber

The public has been on a long journey with the Tahoe Transportation District over the US50/South Shore Community Revitalization project, one that has followed twisted roads and endured roadblocks and detours.

Now it appears the project, also known as the Loop Road, is on the back straightaway, approaching the final turn and homestretch.

"Made with Altitude" Restaurant Week in South Lake Tahoe

Foodies can rejoice in South Lake Tahoe next week as the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority (LTVA) celebrates local restaurants with Tahoe South Restaurant Week.

From January 8 through 15, diners can enjoy a special "Made With Altitude" menu at 22 restaurants.

Gourmet burgers, handmade pastas, mouthwatering steaks, fresh seafood, inventive small plates, and decadent desserts are all on the epicurean delightful menus.

Woman found on roof at Edgewood Tahoe

4:30 p.m. update 12/31/15:

The woman who was a focus of a search in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday was found by Douglas County Sheriff's Search and Rescue.

At 3:30 p.m., April Torres was located on the roof top of Edgewood Tahoe Golf Resort. She has been transported to Barton Hospital. Her medical condition is unknown.

MontBleu surveillance employees spent the day searching through their films and the last time she was seen on film was when she left the casino on foot and went to the corner of the Loop Road and Highway 50.

The investigation continues.

South Lake Tahoe community takes care of each other during holidays

The Christmas spirit has been evident all through the South Shore over the past few weeks as many people and non-profit agencies have been blessed with donations of money, food and gifts to help make the holidays a bit brighter.

Here are some of the many Santas who've been busy at work:

The South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge and Women of the Moose filled up 40 boxes with hams and food for families at Tahoe Valley Elementary school. The students decorated the boxes.

The South Tahoe Police Activities League (STPAL) would like to extend a thank you to the many community members, organizations and volunteers that made it possible to offer positive alternative activities to the youth of South Lake Tahoe this past summer.

STPAL reached over 60 local middle school-aged kids with the opportunity to learn lifelong skills in mountain biking, skateboarding, and golf alongside positive adult role models.

Jan Garcia has been hired as the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe’s director of human resources.

Prior to joining the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe, Garcia served as human resources manager for Edgewood Companies. She has fourteen years of experience in the gaming industry, having served as regional director of human resources for Herbst Gaming, Inc., and director of human resources for both Caesars Lake Tahoe and the Reno Hilton.

Prescribed burns continue in Lake Tahoe basin again this week

North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts will continue prescribed fire operations around Incline Village, Kingsbury Grade and Van Sickle Bi-State Park through next week as weather and conditions allow.

On the west side on Incline Village, crews will be burning 77 acres of hand piles starting Monday, November 23.

35 acres on Park Cattle property near Van Sickle Bi-State Park were ignited Wednesday and will continue as conditions allow.

Prescribed burns to continue around Lake Tahoe

North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service will continue widespread prescribed fire operations around the Lake Tahoe Basin over the next several weeks as conditions allow.

Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe breaks ground on South Shore

A ground breaking ceremony at Edgewood Tahoe brought out community and political leaders, all wanting the celebrate their new project, the Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe.

Rain brought the ceremony indoors, but spirits weren't dampened as people speaking at the ceremony highlighted the major impacts the new project on the state line will make on South Shore's economic and community revitalization, as well as important environmental and recreational enhancements in the area.

Crane topples over at Edgewood Tahoe construction site

Nobody was injured when a crane being operated at the new Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe toppled over on Wednesday afternoon.

The crane, owned by Connolly Crane out of Gardnerville, NV, was getting ready to move when the operator released the brake instead of the house lock according to Kelly Connolly, the owner of Connolly Crane.

22nd Annual Boys and Girls Club Golf Tournament at Edgewood

Edgewood Tahoe is the home of the 22nd annual Boys & Girls Club Golf Tournament on Monday, October 12. The event raises over $40,000 each year to support the work of the club, which assists more than 600 local kids throughout the year.

This popular day of golf, food and fun normally sells out so early registration is recommended.

Justin Timberlake makes the most of his inaugural ACC appearance

While his score may not have won the American Century Golf Championship, Justin Timberlake won the hearts of many fans at Edgewood Tahoe this week. The large gallery following him during the practice rounds and tournament was full of girls, teens and moms trying to catch a glimpse of the recording artist.

During Sunday's final round, Timberlake was partnered with NFL great Jerry Rice and Alfonso Ribeiro who is best known for winning Dancing With the Stars and for his role on Fresh Prince on Bel-Air.

Whittell senior wins Gene Upshaw Memorial Scholarhip

Whittell High School senior Daria Sharon was announced as the recipient for the seventh annual Gene Upshaw Scholarship Award at this year’s American Century Championship.

Her academic achievements and dedication to sports and community service made her the premier candidate to earn this scholarship, valued at $5,000.

Mark Mulder wins American Century Golf Championship

Mark Mulder had a premonition on Thursday after playing his practice rounds at Edgewood Tahoe. "I'm going to win this," he said. "I was in kind of the groove and knew I had an absolute chance," he said of the American Century Golf Championship.

Too bad his parents didn't take advantage of their son's 8-1 odds to win at the Harvey's Sportsbook. The former Oakland Athletic's pitcher, and current ESPN Baseball Tonight analyst, made the premonition a reality by winning the 26th Annual American Century Golf Championship today with a score of 82.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care wins at the Korbel Hole-In-One Contest

The 17th hole at Edgewood Tahoe was the scene of the Korbel Hole-in-One contest on Friday, bringing together some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment to help raise money for Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC).

Josh Scobee has lead at American Century Golf Championship

Veteran NFL placekicker Josh Scobee has the lead in the American Century Golf Championship in South Lake Tahoe. Scobee, of the Jacksonville Jaguars, has 57 points with the tournament's Modified Stableford scoring.

Round 1 leader Mark Mulder, former Oakland Athletics pitcher, is five points behind with a 52.

American Century Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe until 2022

What the celebrities call the Super Bowl of Golf, the American Century Golf Championship has extended their contract in Lake Tahoe another seven years, until 2022.

The 2015 tournament was the 26th event to be held at Edgewood Tahoe and was the last year of the current contract.

Justin Timberlake enjoys the fan camaraderie in Lake Tahoe

The first glimpse the fans at the 7th hole at Edgewood Tahoe had of Justin Timberlake on Thursday was as he crept up the small hill from the 6th hole, hiding behind the signs lining the tee box.

Why you ask?

A fun and rowdy group of friends from Sacramento had taken control of the hole, their antics heard from all ends of the course. (Follow SouthTahoeNow for that story later today)

"I've heard about you guys, you're world famous," said Timberlake.

It will be a long day of golf on Thursday for the celebrities in South Lake Tahoe for the American Century Golf Championship. Not all celebrities golfing in the championship will be taking part in the Celebrity-Am, but 55 of them are.

Justin Timberlake already a crowd-pleaser at American Century

Fans of the American Century Golf Tournament in South Lake Tahoe have grown accustomed to superstars, but the addition of actor, singer, golfer Justin Timberlake may bring a whole new meaning to "celebrity" for many in the galleries.

This is Timberlake's first time playing in the tournament at Edgewood Tahoe. The six handicap avid golfer is getting the attention of many who don't usually follow golf.

The 34-year-old Timberlake will tee off at 9 a.m. on Wednesday with actor Alfonso Ribeiro. The two will be paired with amateur players selected to join them.

A.J. Hawk to fan on 7th hole: I have no problem doing it again

"I have no problem doing it again," said NFL linebacker A.J. Hawk. "I need to find a way to make it better."

Pairings list released for Tuesday's Tahoe South Celebrity-Am

The American Century Golf Championship in South Lake Tahoe gets underway Tuesday with the Tahoe South Celebrity-Am tournament at 9 a.m. It will be a shotgun start with 18 celebrities paired up with amateur groups.

Private jets started to bring in the celebrities to the Tahoe Valley Airport with many more arrivals expected Tuesday. There will be practice rounds for celebrities held throughout the day.
