Odds makers pick Billy Joe Tolliver to win American Century Championship

Four-time American Century Golf champion Billy Joe Tolliver, former quarterback for five NFL teams, is now the top choice of Harrah’s and Harveys Race & Sports Book to win the 26th annual celebrity golf tournament this week in South Lake Tahoe.

He is listed at 7-2 to win the event over defending champion Mark Rypien and perennial contenders John Smoltz and John Elway.

Rypien, the original favorite, is 5-1 with Smoltz at 6-1 and eight-time champion Rick Rhoden at 7-1 for the 54-hole, modified-Stableford competition at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

American Century releases list of celebrity golfers to participate in Lake Tahoe

Once again, the most popular celebrity golf tournament in the county will be held on the southern shores of Lake Tahoe. The 26th Annual American Century Championship will be held in South Lake Tahoe from July 14-19, 2015 at Edgewood Tahoe.

The list of the 95 participants released resemble the 'A List' of who's who in sports and entertainment, as well as the military. They will all be going after a prize purse of $625,000.

Over 300 participate in the South Lake Tahoe Polio Walk

Community members joined Rotarians on Saturday as they walked the streets of South Lake Tahoe to show support and raise awareness of Rotary International’s effort to eradicate polio in the world. Over 300 people joined in the 3k walk which proceeded along Highway 50 in Stateline, past Edgewood Tahoe, by Lakeside Beach and back to the beginning at the corner of Stateline Avenue and Highway 50 at McP's Taphouse.

Warrior Golf Champion invited to play in American Century Championship

South Lake Tahoe's major summer event, the American Century Championship, will once again add another U.S. Army veteran and hero to the 2015 event this July.

Retired United States Army Sergeant Major Rodney Gorman will join the field by virtue of his victory in the 2014 George W. Bush Presidential Center’s Warrior Open. He will join Corporal Chad Pfeifer at Edgewood this summer. Pfeifer was the three-time defending Warrior Open champion and the 2014 tournament's fifth place finisher.

28th Annual Booster Club Golf Tournament at Edgewood this weekend

A few spots are still available for rounds of golf on Sunday at Edgewood Tahoe during the 28th Annual Booster Club Golf Tournament. The joint event presented by the Whittell High School and South Tahoe High School booster clubs raises funds for sports at both South Shore schools.

The fun-filled event includes chances to win trophies and $100 for closest-to-the-pin. Each day is an individual tournament with a scramble format. Couples, individuals and foursomes are invited to play. There will be trophies awarded to the top three teams each day.

Tahoe Basin prescribed fire operations to continue next week

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service are expected to conduct prescribed fire operations around the Tahoe Basin next week, beginning Monday, March 16, 2015, weather permitting.

Operations are scheduled southwest of Meeks Bay, on Gardner Mountain near South Tahoe High School and off Gardner Street, Luther Pass near Grass Lake, Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly, Edgewood Canyon on lower Kingsbury Grade and near Logan Creek Drive on the East Shore. Operations may last through the next several weeks, as long as conditions allow.

Two South Lake Tahoe financial advisors form new partnership

STAR donates to South Lake Tahoe non-profits this winter

The South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts (STAR) gave a total of $15,000 to three area non-profits this holiday season to feed families as well as secure essential upgrades to community centers/programs.

STAR gifted $5,000 to Christmas Cheer All Year’s Food for Families, which resulted in $11,400 worth of fresh food from Raleys supermarket. Through this initiative Raleys was able to purchase items at wholesale while selecting various items that were in more demand. For every $1 donated to Christmas Cheer results in more than $2 worth of food.

The Story Behind South Lake Tahoe's Freaker's Ball

At the end of the month, costumed revelers will descend upon the MontBleu nightclubs for the 36th Annual Freaker's Ball in South Lake Tahoe. Partiers will be attired in everything from wild, provocative and risque to funny, crazy and creative costumes.

Changes on the South Shore: Edgewood's new lodge, new look

Editor's note: This is part of a series on all of the change going on in South Lake Tahoe. We'll be updating you with photos and news.

Ground won't break until May on the new Edgewood Tahoe Resort but the golf course is already undergoing major changes to prepare for the big project. Trees have been cleared, the 9th hole has been reconfigured and made into a par 3, and a 10 foot tall fence is being erected around the construction site.

The new pier has already been constructed and will allow guests to boat to the resort.

Agencies and public work together to keep Lake Tahoe beaches clean

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority would like to thank all of our community members, visitors, businesses and agencies who have helped keep our Lake Tahoe beaches clean throughout a busy summer season. Debris on Lake Tahoe’s beaches affects everyone’s enjoyment of the lake, and trash and debris on the beaches and streets can easily find its way to the lake and adversely impact lake clarity, water quality and wildlife.

Full day of South Lake Tahoe activities on tap for Sunday

Visitors and locals alike will find a variety of activities to enjoy in South Lake Tahoe on Sunday, August 31.

The highlight of the day will be the Annual Labor Day Fireworks show. The show features a simultaneous music broadcast that can be heard on local stations KRLT-FM 93.9 and KOWL - AM 1490. Show begins at 8:30 p.m. The fireworks are visible from all over town.

Live Violence Free honors patrons of 15th Annual Sunset Gala

Live Violence Free welcomed distinguished patrons of the upcoming 15th Annual Sunset Gala to the beautiful Glenbrook, NV home of Lynn Brantley and Doug Tuttle on Saturday, August 23. The Sunset Gala Committee extended appreciation for the patrons’ commitment to the expansion of Live Violence Free’s community services and support. The Sunset Gala Committee and Board of Directors proudly recognized the Honorary Chairwomen of the Sunset Gala, Cathy DiCamillo and Ginger Mitchell, for their combined long-standing dedication and service to Live Violence Free that spans almost 60 years.

Two new board members for Tahoe Prosperity Center

Not only has the Tahoe Prosperity Center has been working on issues to create healthier communities around the lake, they have also been welcoming new members to their Board of Directors.

New to the board are locals John McLaughlin, Chief Financial Officer of Edgewood Companies and Ken Riley, Senior Vice President, Kiewit Infrastructure Group, Inc. They join 24 other community members on the board whose goal is to also promote regional sustainability through economic vitality and by being environmental stewards.

Kudos: Bijou Community School's NEW PLAYGROUND

The Bijou Community Playground represents a community effort and shows what we can do when we all come together and each do a little. "Many hands make for light work" is a true phenomenon here at Bijou School. Since 2007, with the inception of the Two Way Immersion program, and our forced volunteering program, the parents, staff and community members have consistently been spending time, funds, and those blood, sweat and tears we always talk about at this school. The new playground, as well as the field and park behind it, is a tangible representation of the volunteer force here at Bijou.

Ever wonder what the beach or roads look like before you head out for the day? Traveling to South Lake Tahoe and want to see a live shot of what the beautiful area looks like? That is now possible by simply logging on the the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority website and opening your own portal to Tahoe.

"Six live high definition cameras called were installed at various Tahoe South locations with the intent to inspire and engage ,fans to share breathtaking images with the world," according to the LTVA.

Bijou Community School playground ribbon cutting ceremony

Bijou Community School PTA is hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new playground that was built thanks to the generous donations of a multitude of community members, businesses, and foundations. This project has been the epitome of a community effort with over 40 donors helping the school's PTA raise over $100,000.

Even with wet weather, Celebrity Golf sets one day attendance record

Take a list of top celebrity athletes plus a retired LPGA champion and add the fact that the tournament is celebrating it's 25th anniversary, one would except large and excited galleries at the American Century Golf Championship.

Crowds didn't disappoint on Saturday when a record 13,000 attended the tournament at Edgewood Tahoe.

2014 Gene Upshaw Scholarship awarded to Whittell High student Melissa Petty

George Whittell High School student Melissa Petty of Stateline, NV. was announced as the recipient for the sixth annual Gene Upshaw Scholarship Award at this year’s American Century Championship. Petty’s essay about her hard work in the classroom, her sports, her faith and goodwill helped secure the scholarship valued at $5,000. Petty plans to attend the University of Nevada, Reno and pursue a bachelor’s degree in science.

Mark Rypien wins American Century Championship: Winner of 1st and 25th celebrity tournament

The end of the 25th American Century Golf Championship in South Lake Tahoe wasn't seen by the thousands of spectators that normally line the 18th hole in the final round.

Lightning caused the tournament to be placed on delay for a couple of hours, and by the time play resumed thousands of people had headed back to their cars, hotels and homes.

In true Celebrity Golf fashion, the end was an exciting one. At the time of the delay there was a tie between Mark Rypien and Jeremy Roenick, with Annika Sorenstam in third with just a few holes left to play.

Celebrities bestow gifts on young fan at Celebrity Golf

In a matter of moments, Madden Casto of South Lake Tahoe found herself in possession of two autographed golf balls and a $20 bill.

The third grade student at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School, decked out in a tutu and flowers in her hair, was picked out of the crowd by comedian Ray Romano at the 17th hole at Edgewood Tahoe. He said he'd give someone $20 if he made it onto the green with his tee shot and Madden became that "someone."

Lightening causes Tahoe Celebrity Golf play to be suspended

Lightening has caused a delay at Edgewood Tahoe for the 25th American Century Golf Championship. Television coverage on NBC will be switched over to NBCSN if play resumes.

The leaders at the time the storm horns sounded were Jeremy Roenick and Mark Rypien tied at 64, with Hall-of-Famer Annika Sorenstam currently in third place with 62 points. If the tournament is able to conclude, play will resume with the leaders playing the 16th hole.

Mark Rypien wins closest to the hole contest; Winnings go to Tahoe Fund

On July 18th 15 of some of the world’s most legendary athletes and entertainers competed in Lake Tahoe for the Korbel Closest-to-the-Pin Challenge as part of the American Century Championship, currently being played at the Edgewood Golf Course. NFL Former Pro Bowl Quarterback Mark Rypien who was the inaugural tournament champion took home the title after teeing off from Hole 17 and placing his ball just seven feet away from the pin winning a $5,000 donation for The Tahoe Fund from the Korbel Toast Life® Foundation.

Sunday's Celebrity Golf tee times

The final round of golf at Edgewood Tahoe is Sunday.

Greg Maddux, Bode Miller and David Wells start the day off on the 1st Tee at 7:50 a.m. and the leaders, Jeremy Roenick, Chad Pfeifer and Mark Rypien wrap up the start times at 10:10 a.m.

Tickets are $25 for the day and available at the gate. Parking is free at casinos in the area and along the street if spaces can be found. The old Horizon parking lot is available for parking at $15 per vehicle.

Jeremy Roenick takes lead into final day of play at American Century Golf Championship

The crowds were out in force for round two of the 25th Annual American Century Golf Championship in South Lake Tahoe Saturday. The beach on 17 was packed as usual with boaters and sunbathers waiting for their chance to play games of toss and catch with the dozens of celebrities that always join in the fun.

Joe Theismann wins Korbel's 8th Annual Celebrity Spray Off at Edgewood Tahoe

Champagne was flowing on the 18th tee Friday as 29 of the celebrity golfers participating in the 25th Annual American Century Championship proved their skill in something other than golf.

As celebrity superstars prepared to tee off on the 18th hole, Korbel challenged them to show off their best champagne celebration skills as part of the Celebrity Spray-Off. Former NFL MVP Joe Theismann took home top honors after he popped the cork on a bottle of Korbel and his cork traveled the furthest distance - 87ft.

Celebrities open up about Manziel, heros, autographs and American Century Celebrity Golf

Three former football players joined the local Rotary clubs for breakfast on Thursday morning, sharing their honest feelings on many subjects from family to Johnny Manziel. Tahoe Douglas Rotary and South Lake Tahoe Rotary Clubs invited Marshall Faulk, Trent Dilfer and Sterling Sharpe to their joint meeting at MontBleu.

Annika Sorenstam: "I think once you're a competitor you're always a competitor"

Golf fans know her from her 89 LGPA golf tournament victories, 10 major championships and total winnings over $22M. Celebrity Golf fans will soon find out how the retired golfer who had to "dust the rust off her clubs" will play at Edgewood in her first American Century Golf Tournament this weekend.

Favored to win the tournament, Sorenstam reminded those at a press conference Thursday that she hasn't played much since retiring, and while she has played under the Stableford method that isn't how she won so many tournaments during her career.

American Century Celeb-Am Tournament Thursday at Edgewood Tahoe

A long day of golf is in store for the celebrities and their amateur partners on Thursday as they participate in the annual American Century Celeb-Am Tournament at Edgewood Tahoe.

53 groups of golfers will hit the course starting at 6:50 a.m. The last group will tee off at 2:10 p.m.

Each group of five golfers will contain one American Century celebrity participant. Former Cincinatti Bengal wide receiver Cris Collinsworth, who is not one of the Celebrity tournament's golfers, will be playing as an amateur in actor Oliver Hudson's group.

Celebrities arriving in town: Celebrity-Am Tournament Wednesday

The private airplanes are starting to line the tarmac at the Lake Tahoe Airport so that can only mean one thing, it's time for the 25th Annual American Century Celebrity Golf Championship.

Practice rounds started Tuesday, and Wednesday will be the 2014 Lake Tahoe Celebrity-Am Tournament, pairing up some of the celebrities golfing this weekend with invited guests.

Annika Sorenstam Warms up at Edgewood Wednesday; Celebrities on Their Way To Tahoe

"The course is in great shape and it's a beautiful day in Lake Tahoe," Annika Sorenstam said as she took time out from her round of golf at Edgewood Tahoe Wednesday to speak to the media. She is preparing for next week's 25th American Century Championship where she'll compete against other professional athletes and entertainers.

Sorenstam, who has a 2nd home in Lake Tahoe and spends three to four months a year there, said she's been a spectator on hole 17th during the past celebrity tournaments and is looking forward to being a competitor this year.

Large Scale Beach and Lake Tahoe Clean Up After Fireworks

Volunteers are scouring Lake Tahoe beaches and waters, looking for fireworks remnants and other trash.

In response to the lawsuit filed after large amounts of fireworks debris was found on the beach at Pinewild last summer, local service clubs, employee groups and other volunteer teams formed by local agencies joined in beach clean up efforts.

Communities across the country are celebrating America's Independence Day and South Lake Tahoe is no different.

Thousands of visitors have come to town to enjoy fireworks, BBQs and family fun. There are many ways to celebrate Friday:

Head out to watch the 3rd Annual Fourth of July Parade at 10 a.m. Cars, trucks and other vehicles will set out from Les Schwab Tires at the Y and head down Highway 50 to the American Legion where there will be a BBQ. Sit along the street (the best views are on the same side of the street as the parade will be moving).
