CHP motorcycle safety campaign launched
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/17/2015 - 9:41amCalifornia continues to experience high numbers of motorcycle-involved collision deaths and injuries, and because of this the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has been awarded a grant to promote motorcycle safety and awareness.
The goal of "Have a Good Ride II" is to reduce the number of motorcycle-involved fatal and injurty traffic collisions statewide.
American Century donates $55,500 to Lake Tahoe non-profits

Second suspected DUI lands El Dorado County schools chief in jail
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/06/2015 - 8:21pmEl Dorado County schools chief Jeremy Meyers was arrested Thursday for the second time in five months for allegedly driving under the influence, this time after he crashed his truck into a utility box at 2 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Meyers, 45, allegedly had a blood alcohol content of 0.15 percent or more, a threshold approaching twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent, according to the CHP. Authorities did not provide his exact blood alcohol level.

The new ETS program offers three areas of concentration: biological resources, physical resources, and sustainability. The dynamic duo team of Holly Greenough and Amy Jackson are beginning Phase Two of what they started last year, a program that takes students from school to career. The students that attend Mt. Tallac are the ones that stay in town, unlike others who take the college path and leave town and start a career and families elsewhere.

Lake Tahoe Dance Connection holds 2nd Annual Summer Dance Experience

The second annual Lake Tahoe Dance Connection will consist of a camp, August 12 – 14, and a Dance Intensive Weekend, August 15-16.
For the full summer dance experience, it is recommended that you enroll in both the Dance Camp and Intensive Weekend; however, registration is available for just one class, one day or either event. LTDC is open to a variety of age groups and levels, although dance experience is necessary.

Watson, a senior at South Tahoe High, participated in the 11th Annual European Global Challenge Volleyball Tournament as the starting libero for the U.S. Westside, California U17 team .
Wag, Waddle and Walk event tonight

The monthly dog walking activity brings together dog owners for a little exercise, optional competition and socializing. The on-leash walk starts at Al Tahoe Post Office parking lot and finishes at Sierra Pizza on Al Tahoe Blvd.
This family friendly event is for non-aggressive canines and people. Dogs must be on-leash and up-to-date on their vaccinations.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care breaks ground on new home

Since then, they've treated over 22,000 animals, released over 14,000 rehabilitated animals back into the wild, have a volunteer crew of 2,000 people, and train 50 to 100 new volunteers annually.

The Lake Tahoe Master Gardeners are holding the Annual Tahoe in Bloom Garden Tour on Saturday, July 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Six beautiful gardens will be on display in the Mid-Kingsbury neighborhood.
During the tour there will also be three Tahoe-specific educational gardening talks, and Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer any questions.
Construction in full swing on Heavenly's Epic Discovery Project

This new experience is designed to appeal to a wide range of visitors. It includes zip line and tree canopy tours, an alpine coaster, a mountain bike park, multi-use trails, ropes courses, and interpretive and educational tours to teach visitors about the Lake Tahoe Region’s cultural and environmental resources.
Proposed Martin Slough Trail in Douglas County receives $100k grant
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/06/2015 - 7:56pmDouglas County was awarded $106,000 for the construction of a trailhead on Buckeye Road to serve the proposed Martin Slough Bike Path. The Douglas County project was one of twelve selected out of twenty two applicants to receive grants from the Nevada State Parks Recreational Trail Program. When complete, the Martin Slough Bike Path will connect Jakes Wetland in Minden to the Gilman Ponds in Gardnerville. The path will be 2.61 miles long and consist of a 10-foot wide paved section. Funding for the path is from the Nevada Department of Transportation’s Local Technical Assistance Program.

Reform called for in funding of wildfire suppression efforts

Due to the threat of catastrophic wildfires in the West, three major players at the government level have called for reforms in the way the federal government funds wildfire suppression efforts.

Native Species Festival at Taylor Creek Visitor Center

The Sixth Annual Native Species Festival will be held at the Taylor Creek visitor Center in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This free family event is hosted by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and is a great way to spend the day outdoors and learn about the native species of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The Visitor's Center is located three miles north of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 89.

How Leadership Lake Tahoe changed my life

What started as an annual joint venture between the two Chambers of Commerce that served the South Shore is now a biennial leadership experience.
I was a member of Leadership Lake Tahoe in 2006 and I can say that it changed my life.
Heavenly's Epic Discovery Project jumps final approval hurdle

After Vail Resorts gained approval from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) on March 27, they needed the blessing of the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Board, which they received today.

The annual Celebration of Education hosted by the Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation will take place on Wednesday, May 13 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at South Tahoe Middle School.
Last year's Foundation grant recipients will be displaying their projects through words, photos, videos and live performances.
This event will be taking place outside the elementary and middle school concert that will be taking place at STMS during the evening.
Families, students and the public are invited to stop by and enjoy the grant recipient's presentations.

Those words may be heard through the South Tahoe High (STHS) campus on Friday as the school is visited by a film crew from the "In View with Larry King" show.
It was announced in February that Lake Tahoe Unified School District was chosen to be one of 12 California schools to be featured on the FOX network business shows.
The show will explore the many educational opportunities that STHS offers that make the school unique.

In fact, community colleges in California make up the largest system of higher education in the United States with 2.1 million students on 112 campuses.
With statistics like this, the recognition given to Lake Tahoe Community College this week show how unique the local school is now that LTCC has made the list of "Top Community Colleges in California."

El Dorado County statistics: Near top in healthiest, alcohol issues and DUI fatalities

For the fifth consecutive year, El Dorado County has ranked among the top ten healthiest counties statewide in an annual report by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The "County Health Rankings" report, released on March 25, 2015, ranked El Dorado County 7th healthiest among the 57 ranked counties in California.
Dr. Gregory Bergner set to retire from Barton Health
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/30/2015 - 11:19pmIn 1981, Dr. Gregory Bergner opened Tahoe Family Physicians along with Dr. Brooks Martin and Dr. Paul Rork. The popular physicians delivered hundreds of South Lake Tahoe babies and kept many in the community healthy in a family friendly atmosphere.
Bergner is set to retire on April 14 after 34 years of helping the South Shore, not only as a doctor but as someone who actively sponsored, volunteered, and participated in many local organizations.

East Fork Fire and Paramedic Districts, Tahoe Douglas Fire and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office have partnered with The Fire Prevention Association of Nevada (FPAN), to present the Sesame Street Fire SafetyWorkshop, Teaching Fire & Life Safety Behaviors.
This training is being offered for the first time in Northern Nevada. This opportunity is valuable to professionals dedicated to day care, pre-school and early childhood development; providing tools and technics to teach fire and life safety behaviors.
