Hard Rock Lake Tahoe announces BaseJam Summer Concert Series

Summer in South Lake Tahoe means being outdoors and enjoying life, and the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino announced today one more thing to enjoy: more outdoor concerts.

A temporary 7,500 seat outdoor area is being created on the back parking lot of Hard Rocky Hotel & Casino in Lake Tahoe in order to host the “BaseJam Summer 2015 Outdoor Concert Series.”

A summer full of concerts at the new casino on the South Shore will start with the 3rd Annual Lake Tahoe Reggae Festival on June 27. Also booked is the Lake Tahoe Bluegrass Festival which is slated for July 11.

Sierra-at-Tahoe latest resort to close due to drought

Sierra-at-Tahoe is the latest Lake Tahoe area ski resort to announce that it will suspend operations, beginning Monday, because of the lack of snow brought on by the ongoing drought in the west.

Soroptimist Writing Festival winners

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra recently honored 12 South Tahoe Middle School (STMS) students for their winning Writing Festival essays. Each year the members of the club collaborate with the Language Arts teachers at STMS to provide an opportunity for students to express themselves.

Winning essays are selected from each grade level. First place and first place honors winners each won a $75 cash award, second place $50 and third place $25.

Crowds flock to South Lake Tahoe; Heavenly opens Stagecoach

If you have driven anywhere in South Lake Tahoe this week, you'll know that droves of visitors have decided to come to town for the holidays. With both Christmas and New Years Day on a Thursday many have made their visit a four or five-day long weekend.

Highway 50 from Meyers to Camino has seen heavy traffic in both directions. According to travelers, Sno-Parks at Strawberry and near Echo Summit caused traffic to come to a halt as far away as Kyburz as dozens of cars lining both sides of the highway.

Himmel Haus to start Haus Party Winter Music Series in the new year

Starting Friday, January 9, 2015, the Haus Party Winter Music Series will offer live music from all over California, Nevada and the Pacific Northwest every other Friday night.

This 21 and over music series will be held every other Friday night, January 9 – April 17, 2015 at Himmel Haus in South Lake Tahoe, CA. Doors will open at 9:00 pm with live music starting at 9:30 pm. There will be a $10 admission (FREE admission on your birthday) with affordable drink options to suit a ski bum budget including $4 Red Bull and Shochu and $4 premium ½ liter beers.

Local School Trees

Designer Christmas Trees are the star of Barton event this week

We all have our own traditional touches we put on our Christmas Trees, from Grandma's special ornament to strung popcorn and cranberries. There is nothing ordinary or traditional about the trees on display at Harrah's Tahoe this week during Barton's Festival of Trees.

Tree designer Tara Dobyns, a 37-year South Lake Tahoe local, was selected to design two trees this year. When asked if she was an artist or decorator, Dobyns answered "no, I'm a landlord!"

Teddy Bear Hospital a big hit at Barton's Festival of the Trees

The anticipation from youngsters was contagious on Friday night during Barton's Festival of the Trees. Not only did they have hot chocolate and popcorn, but kids were making ornaments, writing letters to santa, watching the performers from Marcia Sarosik Dance and South Tahoe high, but the jolly guy himself was there, listening to all of the wish lists.

Teddy bears of all shapes, sizes and conditions were taken to the Teddy Bear Hospital where doctors and nurses from Barton Health examined, x-rayed and bandaged the bears who weren't feeling too well.

As we at the Nevada Department of Transportation and Q&D Construction substantially complete the Kingsbury Grade Pavement Reconstruction Project this week, we want to thank local community members and businesses for their understanding and support.

Originally scheduled to continue through next summer, the project has substantially completed this week; one season ahead of the original schedule. Completing this important project ahead of schedule could not have been accomplished without the understanding of the entire community.

SnowGlobe advanced purchase tickets almost sold out

The third SnowGlobe music festival is slated for December 29-30, 2014 in South Lake Tahoe and tickets are moving quickly. Festival organizers announced today that their advanced purchase three day passes are almost gone.

Concert goers can purchase a three day pass with one payment, or have the payments broken up over a period of time.

Blue Ribbon Award Nominees Announced by TahoeChamber

The nomination period for the 2014 Blue Ribbon Awards ended on Friday, October 10 at noon. TahoeChamber’s prestigious awards program that recognizes exceptional South Shore businesses received over 175 nominations for eight separate award categories. The finalists and winners will be announced at the 7th Annual Blue Ribbon Awards dinner and ceremony on November 13 at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. Annual Festival in honor of the Kokanee Salmon this weekend

Last year, a government shut down caused the annual South Lake Tahoe festival that honors the Kokanee Salmon to be canceled, though nobody told the fish. Highway 89 was lined with cars since people had to walk in to view the fish spawning as well as enjoying fall foliage.

SnowGlobe 2014 lineup announced

The SnowGlobe Music Festival will be in South Lake Tahoe December 29-31, 2014. Tahoe Arts Project looking for vendors for annual holiday faire

Tahoe Arts Project has announced the return of their Holiday Festival! The 3rd annual event will be held for two days this year, November 15 and 16.

They are looking for crafters and artists, from beginner to professionals. All items must be handmade and no imports will be allowed.

Booth prices are $100 for a 10 x 10 booth space with no additional commission fees charged. There are also have 6 x 7 booth spaces available for $75. Booth Fee's are for BOTH days, making it affordable when compared to other events.

Ken Newbold of MontBleu wins People's Choice at Barton Cocktail Contest

More than 200 people enjoyed the unique cocktail creations served up at the 5th Annual Barton Foundation Signature Cocktail contest held at the Riva Grill on Wednesday evening.

The festive and lively evening featured nine bartenders who were challenged to create a drink that featured Tahoe Blue Vodka. Contestants included Stephen Camp (Heavenly), Gary Gramprie (LewMarNel’s), Ian Sievwright (MacDuff’s ), Alice Schmalenberger (Mc P’s Pub ), Ken Newbold (MontBleu), Josh Thompson (Nepheles ), Erick Martinez (Riva Grill), Mara Milich (Sonney’s BBQ ), and Rob Morse (The Boathouse).

Beachcomber Inn wins South Lake Tahoe Chili Cook-off

The 3rd Annual Fall Festival and Chili Cookoff was held in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday at the Recreation Center.

Jeanne Prestella of the Beachcomber Inn won $100 as the Judge's favorite in the Chili Cookoff with Niki Congero of the Humane Society coming in second. The other entrants were Bryan Schwartz of Bob Dog Pizza in Meyers and John Fontenelli with his "Bachelor's Kitchen" entry.

Oktoberfest Celebration at Camp Richardson

Bassnectar is the brainchild of Lorin Ashton, a San Francisco-based DJ, producer and artist.

Over 1,200 people attend Sample the Sierra in South Lake Tahoe

With blue skies and warm temperatures, many people were out enjoying everything there is to do in South Lake Tahoe this holiday weekend. Many events from a carnival to fireworks were held, giving people plenty to choose from.

One of these events was the 5th Annual Sample the Sierra Farm to Fork Festival. The main event was held at Bijou Community park on Sunday, with over 1,200 people enjoying food and drink from the region. There were 16 booths of local food, wine, beer and spirits as well as an artisan marketplace, live music and a cooking contest with a mystery box of ingredients.

Full day of South Lake Tahoe activities on tap for Sunday

Visitors and locals alike will find a variety of activities to enjoy in South Lake Tahoe on Sunday, August 31.

The highlight of the day will be the Annual Labor Day Fireworks show. The show features a simultaneous music broadcast that can be heard on local stations KRLT-FM 93.9 and KOWL - AM 1490. Show begins at 8:30 p.m. The fireworks are visible from all over town.

Pop-Up Dinner will be held at the Lake Tahoe Community College from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The menu is curated and cooked by Chef Stephen Moise, the Executive Chef of The Ridge Tahoe and former Corporate Chef for Tommy Hilfiger. First Tees & Tastings Golf Tournament at Northstar at Tahoe

50th anniversary of National Preservation Act celebrated

Attendees of the Valhalla Art, Music and Theater Festival learned how to use a cross-cut saw, the primary tool still used today to keep trails open and accessible in the Wilderness. The event celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the 1964 National Wilderness Preservation Act.

U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit staff provided saws, logs and gloves and guided over 50 participants of all ages as they cut through a 10-inch log and received the souvenir slice branded with the 50th Wilderness Anniversary logo.

Water issue expert to speak in Lake Tahoe

The Sierra Business Council is hosting Peak Innovation, a conference for Lake Tahoe locals, small business owners, communities and local governments. During the conference, Dr. Peter Gleick, an expert in water issues especially in the context of economic and environmental justice, will be at the conference which takes place October 8-10 in Tahoe City. In a National Geographic science blog, Gleick recently repeated the common question, “Why, if the California drought is so bad, has the response been so tepid?”

Valhalla Art and Music Festival wraps up season with two free concerts

On Sunday, August 17 Valhalla presents the final in the free Concert on the Lawn series. This is a special free kids concert featuring the acclaimed children’s act the Banana Slug String Band. Their music is original and full of inspiring positive messages about taking care of each other and the environment. Everyone is invited to bring a picnic and join sit on the Grand Lawn at Valhalla from noon to 2:00 p.m.

5th Annual Peaks & Paws to raise money for Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe

'Forever Dreams for Veterans' to raise funds for military brain injuries

Almost once an hour a military veteran commits suicide in the United States according the the Department of Veterans Affairs and among those on active duty the number is still sobering, one a day.

In an effort to bring the plight of American military members suffering from Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) to the forefront, a Broadway like show and wellness festival are coming to South Lake Tahoe.

2nd Annual Meyers Mountain Bike Festival this weekend

The 2nd Annual Meyers Mountain Bike Festival will take place on August 10, 2014 in the Divided Sky parking lot, located at 3200 US Highway 50. Donations are requested and include a chance at a door prize.

Tallac Historic Site transforms into vintage Gatsby this weekend

Each year, during the second weekend of August, the lawns and buildings at the historic Baldwin and Pope Estates turn back the clocks to a time of jazz, prohibition, prosperity and innovation.

The annual Gatsby Festival will be held at Tallac Historic Site August 9-10. Those that attend the free event will find vintage cars, games, music, Maytag clothes washer demonstrations, a speakeasy, tours and vendors with food and vintage clothing. The popular afternoon tea on Sunday is already sold out.

Not too early to start planning for Tahoe Arts Project Holiday Festival

No, it's not Christmas yet, but its not too early for Tahoe Arts Project to start planning their annual Holiday Festival. They are looking for crafters and artists to fill booths for the two day event on November 15 and 16.

TAP had such a successful event last year that they've expanded it to two days and have opened signups for booth space. The festival also includes food, entertainment and a visit from Santa Claus.

They encourage all types of handmade goods and no imported items are permitted.
