The Seventh Annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show is coming back to the South Tahoe Middle School Multi Purpose Room on April 27 and 28, 2018. Produced by Golden Bear Events, the show will run from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, and from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Dozens of vendors will be on hand with skin care, yard care, hot tubs, crafts, soaps and everything else you need in your home and garden!

This family friendly show offers free admission for attendees, free door prize opportunities, and drawing prizes.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) awarded $25,003 towards programs in the local community that benefit youth during a luncheon on Wednesday, March 14.

The following presenters gave a brief description of the program on how the funds that were awarded would be used.

Learn how to grow vegetables in your Lake Tahoe garden this summer through a series of free workshops presented by the UCCE Master Gardeners. The classes are offered at both ends of the lake on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during May. This year's classes are potatoes, onions, raspberries, lettuce & kale, and tomatoes.

Each week will be a new theme. The workshops are all family friendly and attendees get to go home with plants for your home garden!

Classes will run from May 14 - June 14th, 2018 in the evenings.

Golden Bear Events is offering all South Tahoe Chamber members a dicount on their booth space to their 7th annual Home & Garden Show held at the South Tahoe Middle School multi-purpose room Friday, April 27 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This is a great opportunity to showcase goods or services to all attendees.

Admission is free for all attendees. There will be several door prizes and other drawings throughout the show. Also, the Chamber will hold their April Business Mixer during the show on Friday evening.

Have you missed your dose of doughnuts and frozen yogurt? No longer do you have to wait as Rainbow Sprinkles is reopening at the Y in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, January 16 at 6:00 a.m.

After their first year in business the owners closed for a couple of weeks to make some changes and are now excited to see the customers they've missed.

"We love our customers and can't wait to see them again!" said co-owner Salli Ross-Filgo. "We wanted to say how grateful we are to this community for their support. We have had the honor of serving so many wonderful people."

The community is warmly invited to a trio of free artist receptions and exhibit openings at Lake Tahoe Community College on Thursday, Jan. 18 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.. Come and enjoy the art along with free refreshments with your fellow art lovers.

As weather permits, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has scheduled projects at Lake Tahoe and in El Dorado County. The following are the projects for the week:

LONG-TERM PROJECTS

A bird found on the west slope of El Dorado County has tested positive for West Nile virus, the second for 2017. The bird found near Garden Valley, an Acorn Woodpecker, was tested on September 29 and county health officials just received confirmation this week it had the virus.

To date there have been 463 dead birds to test positive in 38 counties in California. Nearby Sacramento has had 86 birds and Placer County, three birds.

Lots to do in South Lake Tahoe this weekend. Now that South Tahoe and Whittell High Schools had their homecoming games Friday night, the rest of the weekend can be filled with everything from helping feed local youth, buying mattresses or playing golf for the high school, honoring one of the City's first leaders and enjoying the annual Fire Fest.

The Battle Born Harley Davidson Street Vibrations Fall Rally will be held in Carson City from Wednesday, September 27 through Sunday, October 1 from 9:00 a.m. until "the last bike leaves."

The event is free and will include over 70 vendors, the area’s largest beer garden, live music, West Coast Connection stunt shows, burnouts and all of your favorite food trucks. All of this makes this annual party one not to miss.

The Harley-Davidson Demo Truck will also be there with 18 brand new models that can be taken for a test ride on Friday and Saturday.

Join Lake Tahoe Master Gardeners and UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) on September 25 as they delve into the tricks of the trade in growing garlic and onions in high altitude.

These varieties are specifically chosen to survive tough Tahoe winters and provide a hearty spring harvest. Topics include proper varietal selection, location in the garden or container, planting options, and methods for protecting the young plants.

The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Public Health Nursing, will begin conducting low-cost community flu shot clinics on September 27, 2017, with additional clinics offered through November.

Volunteers are needed for the 18th annual Markleeville Creek Day on Saturday, September 9. The Alpine Watershed Group is hosting the event which will focus on completing projects throughout the East and West Carson Watersheds in the following areas:

- Hope Valley Willow Planting and Bank Stabilization
- Grover State Park - Native Garden and Weed Pull
- Bear Valley Trout Spawning Protection
- Markleeville Creek Heritage Park Enhancement
- Storm Drain Stenciling in Markleeville

With the cancellation of the 19-year long tradition of fireworks over Labor Day in South Lake Tahoe due to budget constraints, the Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority and other local businesses have pulled together to present a full menu of things to do on the South Shore from a laser light show to concerts and a carnival.

The 5th Annual Tahoe Mountain Bike and Brew Festival will be held on August 26-27 in Meyers and celebrates the "perfect pairing" of mountain biking and beer, all headquartered at the The Divided Sky, Meyers.

Try out the latest bikes from Ibis, Specialized, Trek, Norco, Pivot, YT Industries, Intense, and Rocky Mtn, and sample craft brews from local breweries including South Lake Brewing Company, Lake Tahoe Aleworx, Coldwater Brewery and 50/50 Brewing.

Truckee has it's own "Secret Garden," a lush valley full of rare carnivorous plants and threatened bird species that has been preserved and kept from the public for more than 100 years.

The Truckee Donner Land Trust and Nature Conservancy partnered together and bought over 1,200 acres in the Lower Carpenter Valley for $10.3 million, 600 acres that is so sensitive that initially the only access with be through guided tours. 637 acres were purchased last year and treat hikers and mountain bikers to Crabtree Canyon. The final 80-acre parcel is under contract for purchase by the partners.

Ryan Galles, the principal of Sierra House Elementary in South Lake Tahoe, has announced that he is leaving Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

Galles has accepted the position of Director of Elementary Education for the Vacaville Union School District (VUSD), a district with 12,000 students and 10 elementary schools.

The UCCE Master Gardeners of South Lake Tahoe are having part one (vegetables only) of their 4th annual Plant Sale this Friday, June 9 at the Ski Run Farmers Market from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., or until they sell out of plants. The sale is being held jointly with the Sierra House Elementary School who will be selling student crafted garden art.

The UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe are having their 4th annual Plant Sale takes on a different format this year. Natives and other perennials need more time to grow out of their overwintering slumber so the sale will be held in two segments. Vegetable plants will be sold at the Ski Run Farmers Market on friday, June 9 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (or until all plants have been sold) and the Natives and Perennials will be sold on Saturday, September 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Sierra House Elementary School.

Boating season in Lake Tahoe is here, and with it comes the return of roadside stations that will inspect and decontaminate motorized boats and watercraft heading to the lake.

All motorized watercraft require inspection for aquatic invasive species (AIS) prior to launching into Lake Tahoe, Fallen Leaf Lake and Echo Lake. Invasive species, such as quagga mussels, New Zealand mudsnails, and hydrilla, are known to multiply quickly and colonize underwater surfaces, including docks and piers, water supply and filtration systems, buoys, moored boats, and even the beautiful rocky shoreline.

The sixth annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show will be held April 28-29, 2017 in the South Tahoe Middle School multipurpose room.

Space is being increased to allow more vendors from the region to participate in the only event of its type on the South Shore. A free children's planting area is also being added to the two day show that runs from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m on Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m on Saturday.

There's only a few more hours to register to volunteer for the 19th Earth Day Restoration and Cleanup Event at California State Parks on on Saturday, April 22. The closest opportunity for those in the Lake Tahoe area is at Grover Hot Springs.

From 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., volunteers will be doing maintenance and development of the Native Plant Demonstration Garden, weed removal and landscaping at the park in Markleville, 30 miles south of South Lake Tahoe.

This hardy perennial vegetable can become part of an edible landscape, and a mainstay in your garden. Ever consider growing fruits and vegetables in your garden here in Tahoe? Join UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe for a workshop to learn how food can be grown at the Lake. Participants receive instruction on cultivation techniques, and history/background on the plants being highlighted. Everyone will leave with free plants for their gardens. These are family friendly workshops, with hands-on opportunities to get acquainted with growing vegetables.
