LTCC Needs Community Input to Develop New Vision

Changes in state regulations are forcing LTCC to change what we do and who we serve. These changes have created challenges that must be overcome if LTCC is to continue serving the communities of Lake Tahoe.

The Live at Lakeview Summer Music Series will return to Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe every Thursday this summer, June 20 through August 29 (excluding July 4).

The City of South Lake Tahoe has recognized the Live at Lakeview Summer Music Series as a Signature Summer Event and awarded a contract to On Course Events for the production of this event series at Lakeview Commons for the next two summers through 2014.

Nevada Posts 26th Consecutive Taxable Sales Increase In August

CARSON CITY – Nevada recorded its 26th consecutive month of taxable sales increases in August, when consumers spent $3.7 billion on goods and services for a 7.6 percent jump over August 2011, the state Department of Taxation reported today.
The last decrease in statewide taxable sales came in June 2010, when a 0.3 percent decline was reported over June 2009.
Taxable sales grew by 8.1 percent in Clark County and jumped double-digits in Washoe County to 10.5 percent.

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department and Police Department responded to a fire at Pioneer Trail and April Drive on the evening of September 18th. Upon arrival, they saw that two homes were fully engulfed with nearby trees also on fire.

'Survivorman' Les Stroud returns to Discovery Channel August 19

After nearly a four-year absence, 50-year-old survival expert Les Stroud will return as Survivorman on Sunday August 19, at 8 p.m. Eastern. Earlier this year, Stroud traveled to the mountains of Norway and the desert island of Tiburon in Mexico to record four new hour-long shows for Discovery. He left as he always does, without food and water while hauling 65 pounds of camera gear to record his every move. Everything was the same, except this time Stroud decided to up the ante by spending 10 days alone in the wilderness instead of the usual week.

Placer County Robbers fire grows to 1,952 acres, 170 homes are threatened

Cal Fire says the Robbers Fire has grown to 1,950 acres and is still 20 percent contained. The latest incident update states that three outbuildings have been lost in the fire, and 170 residences are threatened.
The number of injuries has grown by one, to nine. There are 1,952 people working on the fire.
Evacuations remain in effect for homes off Yankee Jims Canyon & Shirttail Canyon area, as well as parts of Iowa Hill.

Bonanza Park at South Lake Tahoe celebrates grand opening

UPDATE MONDAY: Saturday's grand opening of Bonanza Park brought community members of all ages to hear the dedication from Chuck Scharer, President and CEO of Edgewood Companies and South Lake Tahoe Mayor Claire Fortier.
Youth immediately began playing on the park equipment and the basketball court was ready to host its first game while hot dogs and hamburgers were grilled for the crowd of families and dignitaries to enjoy.

Garden paradise grows in Sierra City

Volunteers from Scottsdale Assist Tahoe RCD with Evans Family Garden

Twenty-three teen and four chaperones from the Bureau of Jewish Education of Greater Phoenix volunteered Thursday at the Evans Family Garden and pitched-in with the Tahoe Resource Conservation District's (TRCD) efforts at the garden. As the five-year-anniversary of the Angora Fire just passed, it was a fitting volunteer effort from this out-of-town group.

I am a big believer in balance. Balancing work and play, exercise and relaxation, the to do’s and the to don’ts. Unfortunately, it seems that many times our virtual see-saw gets pretty lopsided and we’re left stranded in the air with toes dangling, or completely weighed down without any way to get on our feet.

Squaw Valley Hosts an Extraordinary Evening of Poetry

The 43rd annual Squaw Valley Community of Writers will convene again this summer with acclaimed workshops in Poetry, Fiction, Nonfiction and Screenwriting. As part of the workshop, the Squaw Valley Community of Writers will be hosting an extraordinary evening of poetry readings on Thursday, June 28, at 8 p.m. in The Olympic Village Lodge at Squaw Valley.

As part of the evening of poetry, Kazim Ali, Robert Hass, Sharon Olds, Claudia Rankine and C.D. Wright will read from their published and unpublished work, including poems written in Squaw Valley just days before.

Rural Economic Activity Boosts Nevada Taxable Sales By 7.2 Percent In March

CARSON CITY — Nevada’s taxable sales jumped 7.2 percent in March over March 2011, but the state’s two largest urban counties showed more sluggish growth, the state Department of Taxation reported Tuesday.
Taxable sales totaled $3.9 billion in March, driven by Nevada’s rural counties where large energy and mining projects helped boost the numbers overall. For the fiscal year to date, statewide taxable sales are up 7.5 percent.
