Douglas County to hold public meetings to discuss stormwater issues

Douglas County is hosting a series of public outreach meetings to discuss stormwater issues specific to geographic areas in Douglas County and to explain how a stormwater management program and utility fee might work. A presentation will be given at each meeting and will include recommendations from the Citizen’s Flood Task Force, examples of how a stormwater management program could work, and staff will be collecting public input.

Christine Cosbey Smith March 10, 1949 - July 23, 2016

Christy Smith was a loving Mother, Grandmother, Wife, Sister and Daughter who dedicated her life to the service of others, especially children. She passed away on July 23rd after a courageous battle with cancer.

Christy was born March 10, 1949 in Altadena, California to Jack and Marjorie Cosbey. She spent her childhood in Southern California, graduating in 1967 from Long Beach Polytechnic High School. She studied Nursing at Long Beach State College and worked as a nurse in Cardiology and Family Practice.

Water main breaks near Genoa, residents on precautionary boil water alert

3:30 p.m. update from Douglas County Officials: The water line has been located, but it is 15 feet deep with a gas line in the excavation hole and unmarked fiber optic lines running parallel to the edge of pavement along the old road bed. Therefore, efforts are currently limited to the use of a vactor truck for excavation.

The road crew is working with utilities on the excavation. It is anticipated that the crews will be working into the night to make the leak repair. Crockett Construction is onsite and they will be performing the excavation once fiber optics are located.

Did you feel it? Magnitude 2.5 earthquake recorded south of Lake Tahoe

A 2.5 magnitude earthquake was registered Saturday afternoon 15.8 miles south of South Lake Tahoe, according to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory.

The small quake was reported at 12:47 p.m. Elsewhere around the region Saturday, a 1.4 magnitude quake was registered 2.6 miles south, southwest of Genoa. It was recorded at 5:01 a.m. To the north, very small earthquakes have been reported over the past 24 hours, including a magnitude 1.1 located around 4.4 miles west of Mt. Rose.

Genoa Cowboy Festival embodies Western Spirit

The Town of Genoa, Nevada, announced today that the seventh annual Genoa Cowboy Festival will take place in their town from April 28 through May 1. Man arrested in South Lake Tahoe indicted on kidnapping charge

A federal grand jury returned an indictment today against Matthew D. Muller, a 38-year-old disbarred lawyer from Orangevale, charging him with one count of kidnapping.

Muller is charged with kidnapping physical therapist Denise Hoskins at the Vallejo home she shared with her boyfriend on March 23 and keeping her captive for two days before dropping her off near her mother's house in Huntington Beach. He allegedly demanded a $15,000 ransom.

'Dangerous' black bear killed at Tahoe

A problem-causing black bear that wildlife officials said was becoming increasingly dangerous was killed Tuesday in Incline Village.

The bear, a 9-year-old, 450-pound male, was captured Monday night or early Tuesday morning, tranquilized and subsequently euthanized with drugs, said Chris Healy, spokesman for the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

The bear was determined to be the same one that had been raiding trash, breaking into cars and knocking over fences in the area and was killed as a threat to public safety, Healy said.

Douglas County Commissioners fund Genoa Main Street Wi-Fi Project

If you've been to the Town of Genoa you know how challenging it can be to access the internet and check your email due to spotty, at best, reception. This will be a thing of the past as the town just received $20,000 from the Douglas County Commissions on August 6 to fund their Main Street Wi-Fi Project.

History Hunt: Nine original street lights remain in Genoa

While many may not know the name of Lillian Virgin Finnegan, they probably know the Genoa Candy Dance.

Lillian is the woman who started the Genoa Candy Dance in 1919 to raise money to purchase street lights for the town. The dance was held at the Raycraft Hotel, and Lillian and other Genoa women made candy to serve at the dance. In the years that followed, the annual dance continued as a way to raise money to pay the town's electric bill for the street lights. It was considered the "Big Event of the Season" by the people in the Carson Valley, Reno and surrounding communities.

Man arrested in South Lake Tahoe linked to Vallejo kidnapping

A disbarred attorney arrested in South Lake Tahoe has been accused of kidnapping 29-year old Denise Huskins of Vallejo, CA on March 23, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed today.

Carson Valley residents upset about proposed 260 acre solar panel project

A proposed solar panel project on 260 acres of Park Cattle Company land won approval by the Douglas County Planning Commission in May, but residents opposing the solar farm with its 148,277 panels are fighting back. They are taking their complaints to the July 2 meeting of the Douglas County Commissioners led by local residents Steve and Mary Walker who filed an appeal right after approval of the planning commission.

Multiple Fires sparked In Carson Valley; 7,000 without power

9:00 p.m. update:

This just in from the Douglas County Sheriff's Department: On June 27, 2015, at approximately 6:17 p.m., the East Fork Fire District in Douglas County responded to a report of several wildland fires along the east side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

There have been reports of six fires along the west side of the Carson Valley.

East Fork Fire, along with the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) have responded to the multiple fires and are working to access each of the fires.

Tahoe Douglas Fire evacuating Reggae Festival at Hard Rock due to lightning

The 6,000 people attending the Reggae Festival at the Hard Rock Lake Tahoe are being evacuated because of lightning in the area.

Several strikes of lightning in the South Lake Tahoe area Saturday evening prompted the necessity to get the people out according to Tahoe Douglas Fire Marshal Eric Guevin. He was expecting the open the venue back up as soon as safe. As of 6:45 p.m. Saturday, the lightening was in the ridge about Glenbrook.

Small fires in region after storm cell passes through

A very strong storm cell is moving across the east side of Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley this evening, causing some small fires.

The National Weather Service in Reno issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for western Carson City, Minden, Gardnerville, the Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe. The warning is through at least 6:15 p.m. and extends through the Carson Range.

It is expected to impact the east side of Lake Tahoe and into Carson City and Carson Valley. Wind gusts to 60 mph, penny sized hail and heavy rain are possible with this storm, according to the weather service.

Pony Express Re-Ride through South Lake Tahoe

The romantic drama surrounding the Pony Express has made it a part of the legend of the American West. It lives on in an annual re-enactment that is taking place June 15 - 25, 2015.

On Monday, June 15, a rider left St. Joseph, headed for the same destination, and long the same trail, as riders were 155 years ago. They expect to be in Sacramento on June 25 at 11:30 a.m. As of Sunday, June 21 at 9 a.m., the rider was in Sandy, Utah.

Even though it lasted just 19 months, the Pony Express played an important role in the western expansion of the United States. The Pony Express was the most direct and practical means of east-west communications prior to the telegraph.

With the threat of the Civil War there was a need for faster communication with the growing number of people living in the West. Three men understood this need (William H. Russell, William B. Waddell, and Alexander Majors) and created the Pony Express.

Man arrested in South Lake Tahoe on Bay Area home invasion and assault charges

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office helped investigators from the Dublin (CA) Police and Alameda County Sheriff's office arrest a 38-year-old man in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, June 9. Dublin Police had a warrant for the arrest of Matthew Daniel Muller, a suspect in an attempted home invasion robbery that resulted in the assault of the homeowner.

Muller, a resident of Orangevale, CA, was found in his family vacation home on Genoa Avenue in the county portion of the South Shore.

South Lake Tahoe sent to prison for Genoa golf course scheme

A South Lake Tahoe man who bilked 11 people out of $3.6 million will be spending the next 19.5 years in prisons.

Scott H. Summerhays, 56, made false statements and used phony documents to solicit the money from victims who thought they were helping him purchase the Genoa Lakes Golf Course.

On Monday, May 18, Senior U.S. District Judge Larry R. Hicks ordered Summerhays to prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $1.4 million in restitution.

Liberty Utilities to develop two solar projects in Nevada

There may soon be two new solar projects in Nevada, one nearby in Minden and the other near Luning in Mineral County.

Liberty Utilities announced Friday that they filed an application with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) proposing to build two separate solar projects that would be built in Nevada and provide renewable energy to Liberty’s customers via NV Energy’s transmission lines.

USFS asks for public input on Kingsbury Stinger Trail

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is asking for public input on a proposal to reconstruct the Kingsbury Stinger Trail near Kingsbury Grade. The Stinger Trail runs approximately 2.75 miles from Genoa Peak Road (Forest Road 14N32) to Terrace View Drive on lower Kingsbury Grade and is open to all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles and mountain bikes. The trail is very steep in places, is prone to erosion, crosses private land for approximately 280 feet on the lower segment and no longer meets current Forest Service standards for safety and sustainability.

Meet legendary Snowshoe Thompson during Lake Tahoe snowshoe trek

Enjoy a fun snowshoe trek which can be enjoyed by history buffs and family alike. This special snowshoe event, put on by the Tahoe Rim Trail Association, will take participants over historic parts of the famous trail used between Genoa, Nevada and Hangtown (Placerville), California.

Thomson famously carried the mail for two decades in the mid-1800s. Along the route, trekkers will meet and follow “Snowshoe” himself in the person of costumed Chautauqua performer Steve Hale of Comstock Characters. Bring your imagination and be prepared to be transported back to the winter of 1865.

Numerous power outages around the Lake Tahoe region

A strong storm advancing through the Lake Tahoe area is causing isolated outages for some of Nevada Energy and Liberty Utilities’ customers. With winds at 35-50 mph and much stronger gusts over the ridges, utility officials would like to remind customers of the following safety measures.

- Always treat low hanging and downed power lines as if they were energized.
- Call 911 or notify Liberty Utilities’ toll-free emergency number at 1-844-245-6868 if you see downed power lines or damaged electrical equipment.

Carson Valley Storyteller Horserider video series released

For the past year, Terri Arnold of South Lake Tahoe has been creating promotional videos for the Carson Valley Story Teller series. Each of the nine completed videos (three are still in post production), show Arnold as she shows viewers all they can do in the area. She doesn't show you in the normal way either, everything is done while on a horse named Meha. They can all be seen on the Carson Valley Visitor Authority's You Tube page.

Letter: NDOT thanks community for patience during Kingsbury Grade project

As we at the Nevada Department of Transportation and Q&D Construction substantially complete the Kingsbury Grade Pavement Reconstruction Project this week, we want to thank local community members and businesses for their understanding and support.

Originally scheduled to continue through next summer, the project has substantially completed this week; one season ahead of the original schedule. Completing this important project ahead of schedule could not have been accomplished without the understanding of the entire community.

Fire operations begin Saturday at several South Shore locations

A multi-agency prescribed fire operation begins on Saturday, October 18 as the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team has crews from Tahoe Douglas Fire and the U.S. Forest Service at several locations around the lake.

Fall and winter bring cooler temperatures and precipitation, which favor prescribed burning. Each operation follows a prescribed fire burn plan, which considers temperature, humidity, wind, moisture of the vegetation, and conditions for the dispersal of smoke. This information is used to decide when and where to burn.

Motorists preparing for month long Kingsbury Grade Closure

As soon as the holiday visitors head home after the Labor Day weekend, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will close State Route 207 to through traffic starting Tuesday, September 2.

Kingsbury Grade will be closed at the top near Tramway Drive. The lake side of the Grade will be open but the valley side will not. NDOT will temporarily re-open SR207 for the Genoa Candy Dance September 27 and 28.

"Best Tasting Water in Nevada" awarded to Douglas County Utilities

In case you weren't aware, there is a contest in Nevada to determine the best tasting water in the state by judging bouquet, clarity and taste.

This year, after blind tastings and examinations, Douglas County Utilities was the coveted water award during the 2014 Nevada Rural Water Association Training and Technical Conference at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno.

Lightning sparks wildfire in hills south of Spooner Summit

A brush fire started just after 6:45 p.m. Wednesday night in the hills above Carson City between Jacks Valley Road and Clear Creek Road. Fire officials are calling it the Clear Creek Fire and it had burned 150 acres as of 9:45 p.m. The area is not easily accessible. Hot Shots were dropped onto the hills nearby to fight the fire as well as drops from three air tankers and two helicopters. Hand crews will stay on the fire during the night.

The fire was started by lightning and the region saw dozens more lightning strikes into the evening.

In 1851, Genoa became the first settlement in the Nevada Territory and was full of cowboys and settlers. cowboys and ranchers have shared work, words and music here. The first "thirst parlor," the Genoa Bar, came along two years later to serve drinks to those traveling the California Trail as well as others finding themselves in the West.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A Lake Tahoe-area man accused of bilking 11 investors out of $3.6 million in a fraudulent scheme to buy a Douglas County golf course has pleaded guilty to 24 federal charges, including wire fraud and money laundering.

U.S. Attorney Dan Bogden says 55-year-old Scott Summerhays of South Lake Tahoe, pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court in Reno.

From 2008-10, prosecutors say Summerhays told potential investors he was purchasing Genoa Lakes Golf Club near Gardnerville for $17 million.
