SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Fall arrives officially on Tuesday, September 22. A general haze should linger for most locations with worse smoke and degraded air quality expected for portions of northeast California and the eastern Sierra today. Some degree of smoke and haze should affect the region through the week, but it will be dependent on fire activity. High temperatures return to slightly above average with dry conditions and breezy afternoon winds expected for this week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has changed their previous Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning for Tuesday, September 8 from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

They have also issued a Special Weather Statement and a Lake Wind Advisory for Tuesday from 3:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Red Flag Warning

This warning is in place due to gusty winds and low humidity for the Lake Tahoe Basin, Western Lassen, Eastern Plumas, Eastern Sierrs, and Eastern Nevada Counites. Fire Zone 271 and Fire Zone 272.

SUNDAY UPDATE 11:00 a.m.: Eight hundred personnel are currently fighting the Creek Fire which has grown to 45,500 acres.

The Creek Fire a fast-moving fire burning on both Districts of the Forest. The fire which started near the communities of Big Creek and Huntington Lake, moved very quickly prompting several evacuations. Early Saturday afternoon the fire crossed the San Joaquin River and made a run into the Mammoth Pool area. Prompting some members of the public to shelter in place near Wagner’s Store and Campground.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lighter winds return Monday and persist through much of the week as high pressure settles into northeast California and western Nevada. Dry conditions continue this week with high temperatures remaining above average. Low pressure may impact the region next weekend with gusty winds along with rain and snow showers.

Any rain or snowfall amounts will not be heavy but could cause travel impacts and will be welcome after a dry February, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Reno.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A warmer and drier trend will be in store through early next week. Dry conditions with light winds are expected through the weekend. Light winds ill prevail on Wednesday with increased winds Thursday. Wind gusts could reach around 25 mph Thursday afternoon across valley locations across the Sierra and western Nevada with 40-50 mph possible along Sierra ridgetops.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you are waiting for more seasonal temperatures you'll have to wait until next week's forecast. There is a glimmer of what will look like on Monday when the sun should shine before the next storm. A Winter Weather Advisory returns to the Lake Tahoe Basin, this one starts May 20 at 8:00 p.m. until May 21 at 10:00 a.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been a while since the forecast had nothing but sunshine in it, but that is what is ahead for the Lake Tahoe Basin next week! Due to the warming temperatures, watch for increased flow in area streams and rivers due to the snowmelt.

For Monday and Tuesday, the northerly flow that started over the weekend will persist but gradually weaken as high-pressure noses into the region. The northerly flow will still be rather gusty Tuesday morning across area ridges but should diminish through the day.

When looking back at the month of July, each day's high temperatures in South Lake Tahoe were above average except for one, which was equal to the high. Even though July was a warm month, no record highs were set.

After such a warm month, August is starting out much the same.

Hot weather continues into next week as high pressure keeps us in a dry air mass with high temperatures remaining above season averages according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. High temperatures will remain 5-10 degrees above average through the weekend with peak heating expected early next week.

Winter will finally make an appearance to Lake Tahoe, the Sierra Nevada and Northern Nevada by the end of the week and even into next week as well. A much welcomed Sierra snow will be on tap, as a colder, stronger storm is set to move into the region according to the National Weather Service in Reno. This will bring the first significant snowfall to the Sierra that we`ve seen in a while.

The latest weather models continue to show a weak to moderate Atmospheric River (AR) moving into the Sierra, combining with much colder temperatures behind the cold front.

Very mild conditions will prevail through Saturday with a few record high temperatures possible. Things will start changing Saturday ahead of a strong cold front which will bring snow to the Sierra and northeast California Sunday and Sunday night.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch for Lake Tahoe on Saturday, November 25, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. as a potent Pacific storm moves inland, bringing rain and mountain snow along with those gusty winds.

With higher than average temperatures in the Sierra this week it is important to know the warning signs of too much exposure to the heat. It is important to stay hydrated and limit times outdoors in the direct sun.

Heat Exhaustion: According to WebMD, heat exhaustion is a heat-related illness that can occur after you've been exposed to high temperatures, and it often is accompanied by dehydration.

There are two types of heat exhaustion:
Water depletion. Signs include excessive thirst, weakness, headache, and loss of consciousness.

While the Sacramento valley sees record temperatures well above 100, South Lake Tahoe may also break a record high temp on Friday, June 26.

The forecast from the National Weather Service (NWS) is calling for 88 degrees, just above the record high of 87 the South Shore had in 1981.

Saturday should tie the record of 87.

Accuweather.com's extended forecast shows South Lake Tahoe has a chance to break all records over the July 4th weekend. They are calling for 95 degrees on July 3 and 4.

7/29/14 11:30 p.m. update: The El Portal Fire burning near Yosemite is now 34% contained. Firefighters gained good ground on all sides of the fire except for the northern portion which has caused concern for fire officials. Steep, rugged terrain continues to challenge the efforts of firefighters but progress is being made. The weather forecast calls for continued high temperatures reaching as high as 100 degrees near El Portal.

At this point in time 3,545 acres have burned. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Gusty winds will arrive ahead of the storm Tuesday into Tuesday night and Wednesday, bringing light to moderate rain and snow to the Sierra, mainly near the crest, along with stronger ridge top winds.

A pattern change will take place this upcoming week bringing cooler temperatures, chances for rain and high elevation snow showers above Lake Tahoe as well as lowering snow levels, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

A strong ridge of high pressure will push temperatures high temperatures 10 to 15 degrees above normal on Tuesday, with records possible in several locations in Eastern California and Western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

A large area of high pressure will expand westward bringing high temperatures 8 to 12 degrees above normal this week, with mid 70s to low 90s over the Lake Tahoe Basin and Sierra, with mid 90s to 108 degrees in Western Nevada valleys below 5,000 feet.
While hardly the broiling heat wave experienced last week in the northeast, the change will be noticeable, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

After a weekend of sunny blue skies and warm weather a cold front will move into the area late Monday giving way to cooler temperatures and a chance of snow in the Sierra on Tuesday. Later in the week, a colder and wetter system will move through the Lake Tahoe region, with possible periods of heavy snow, according to the weather service.
