Two-vehicle injury crash closes Highway 50 at Echo Summit

5:15 p.m. update 10/3/16: A Carson City resident was transported to Barton Hospital after her Ford Bronco drifted into the oncoming traffic and crashed into a Jeep Wrangler.

Stephanie Peterson of Carson City was heading west on US50 near milepost marker 67 with her infant son in the car. According to the California Highway Patrol's preliminary investigation, she was also operating her cellular phone as she headed up Echo Summit in snowy conditions. She made an unsafe turning movement and allowed her Bronco to drift.

Heading east at the time was Jonathan Chacon of Mammoth Lakes.

City of SLT: Offering lifeguard training as well as hiring swim instructors and lifeguards

The South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department is offering two American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard Training courses. The courses are being taught by City employee, Liz Terzian and will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants will be trained and certified to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illness until EMS (emergency services) take over.

Squirrel hunter accidentally shoots and kills wife in El Dorado County

A Sacramento man out squirrel hunting with his wife on Monday accidentally shot and killed her.

Lee Lao called 911 about 5:15 p.m. to report that he shot his wife, Mee Vang, while squirrel hunting in the 10500 block of Wentworth Springs Road in Stumpy Meadows, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies and emergency personnel arrived and Lao led them to Vang’s location where it was confirmed she had succumbed to her injuries.

Lao was detained and has been cooperating in the investigation. He was released without criminal charges, at this time.

Driver's name released in fatal Kingsbury Grade crash

The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) has released the name of the driver killed in Friday's head on collision on Kingsbury Grade that also injured South Lake Tahoe residents.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care releases Golden Eagle over Red Lake

There were tears, smiles and applause as a Golden Eagle was released Sunday over Red Lake after being rehabilitated by Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care for the past month.

"Loyalton" was found by a Fish and Wildlife warden near the town of Loyalton with no real injuries, but was emaciated. LTWC volunteers call Loyalton a "he" but they don't really know as they don't test the sex on their eagles.

Jason Collin, City Council candidate, on the mend after Kingsbury Grade crash

A number of runners and staff with Epic Tahoe Adventures were involved in Friday's collision between one of their rented motor homes and a SUV on Kingsbury Grade.

The South Lake Tahoe company was involved in the beta testing of a new running event which sent runners in teams of 12, running three legs each, in a 81 mile race from South Lake Tahoe to Mammoth Mountain.

South Lake Tahoe man injured, Wellington woman killed in Kingsbury Grade collision

Kingsbury Grade was closed for several hours Friday after a collision between a motorhome and a Nissan Pathfinder sent several victims to area hospitals and resulted in the death of one of the drivers.

At 1:30 p.m., the two vehicles collided about 1.5 miles down from the summit on the valley side of the road. One person from each vehicle had to be extricated according to Fire Marshall Eric Guevin of Tahoe Douglas Fire Department.

Care Flight landed at the bottom of Kingsbury Grade to transport the victims.

Three rescued by Coast Guard on south end of Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE - Three people were rescued after a distress call led the Coast Guard to the 25-foot vessel, JUST ENOUGH, as it was taking on water near the California/Nevada border of the South Shore of Lake Tahoe Tuesday afternoon.

The initial call came in at 3:00 p.m. and crews from Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County Sheriffs Department responded to the scene.

Man hit by car while he tried to cross Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe

A man attempting to cross Highway 50 east of Lakeview Avenue sustained non-life threatening injuries after he was hit by a car at 6:53 p.m. Monday.

According to witness statements, the 52-year-old transient tried to cross the road from the lake side of the road, paused in the center lane, then ran across the eastbound lanes. He was struck in the fast lane by a car driven by a 32-year-old man from Stateline. Those witnesses said the pedestrian was possibly under the influence of alcohol when he was hit. He was transported to the hospital.

Fundraiser for seriously injured South Lake Tahoe man

Tim Anderson, a South Lake Tahoe flooring contractor, was run over by a car near his home on August 24. He was air-lifted to a trauma center where he remains in critical condition with a tracheotomy, internal injuries, a broken pelvis, broken ribs, scapulas, and other serious injuries. He is breathing on a ventilator and cannot yet talk.

Tim's three sons, Christian, Corey (& fiancé April) and Cameron, and his best friends, Andy, Jody and Joe have been by his side, as well as the Reilly family, Mickey, Mark, and his grandchildren.

Two cyclists hit by drunk driver in South Lake Tahoe

Two bicyclists riding westbound on Highway 50 near Lodi Avenue in South Lake Tahoe sustained minor injuries after they hit by a suspected drunk driver just before 11:00 a.m. Saturday.

The driver, 27-year-old Charles English of South Lake Tahoe, fled the scene and was later located by law enforcement, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Travis Cabral.

Man arrested after leading officers on high speed chase from Tahoe to West Slope

A high speed pursuit that started near Sierra-at-Tahoe on Wednesday ended with the suspect crashing his 2006 BMW and being airflighted off the highway due to his injuries.

On September 7, a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer spotted 27-year-old Allen Elseth from Lodi, Calif., driving at high rates of speed and crossing over the double-yellow lines on Highway 50 near the ski resort exit.

Woman hit by car while crossing Hwy 89 in South Lake Tahoe

12:00 p.m. update Sept. 6: A 27-year-old woman from San Francisco was hit by a car Monday as she attempted to run across Highway 89 in South Lake Tahoe. The driver, a 55-year-old man from Chatsworth, Calif., was driving northbound and did not see the woman as she ran across the five lanes from the 7-11 store to Sonney's BBQ Shack just before 6:00 p.m.

Neither identities have been released. The driver stopped immediately and was cooperative with investigators. Alcohol or other driver/pedestrian impairment is not a factor in the crash.

Small plane crashes at airport in South Lake Tahoe

A Cesna 182 airplane with two people on board crashed as it was landing at the airport in South Lake Tahoe Monday afternoon at 1:22 p.m.

Numerous agencies, including South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Police Departments and the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, all responded.

One person was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries according to the SLTFR. The names, ages and hometown of those on board are not known at this time. People inside the Flight Deck restaurant were waiting for the people on board to arrive and immediately rushed to the scene according to bystanders.

SLTPD to step up pedestrian safety enforcement

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) will step up their pedestrian safety enforcement operations during the month of September as part of “California Pedestrian Safety Month.”

With a rapidly increasing number of pedestrians being killed and injured on roadways in the state of California, the Senate passed a resolution to bring attention to the 813 pedestrians killed on California roadways in 2015 alone. This was nearly 25 percent of all roadways deaths in the state, up from 17 percent just ten years earlier.

Man attemps swim across Lake Tahoe for charity

It had been months of planning and training for former South Lake Tahoe resident Ric Llewellyn as he prepared to swim across the Lake Tahoe in an effort to raise money for a charity close to his heart.

On Wednesday, August 24, all of the preparation was put to test for the endurance athlete as he entered the 68 degree water at Emerald Bay for the 8.5 mile swim across the lake.

Tahoe Rim Trail worker injured after serious fall

A worker on the Tahoe Rim Trail sustained serious injuries Thursday when he fell down a steep slope and landed on rocks near Heavenly Mountain Resort.

"The unidentified man was taken to the hospital with multiple traumatic injuries," Tahoe Douglas Fire Marshall Eric Guevin told South Tahoe Now. "He was with a snagged tree and thrown 40 feet down a 40 percent slope."

Wrong way driver hits woman and children in Carson City head on collision

A Dayton, Nevada man driving the wrong way on a stretch of Highway 50 near the V & T train track overpass in Carson City caused a major injury accident on Saturday night just before midnight.

Steven Stults, 52, was in his Mazda pick-up, traveling west in the eastbound lanes of the highway when he struck a Saturn driven by Victoria Dwyer, 25, also of Dayton. In the backseat of Dwyer's car were her two small children.

"Shooting Fire" in Carson City burns 252 acres, now 80% contained

UPDATE 11AM 8/15: The Shooting Fire is now 80 percent contained and remains non-threatening to structures with a total of 252 acres burned, SFIDC spokeswoman Shannon Brophy said.

UPDATE 8PM: The Shooting Fire is 40 percent contained with eyes on all fire lines from multiple fire agencies, said Carson City Fire Department spokeswoman Stacey Belt. Mapping has the fire size to be between 200 to 300 acres, she said. Several fire crews will remain on scene to close the containment gap.

Oregon man seriously injured when he collides with deer near Pickett's Junction

An Oregon man riding a 1978 BMW motorcycle was seriously injured Wednesday when he collided with a deer on State Route 89 near the intersection with State Route 88 in Alpine County.

Portland resident Rudolf Jung, 32, was riding with a group in the southbound lane just after noon when the deer ran directly in front of him. He was forced onto the dirt shoulder where he overtuned and was ejected.

Man seriously injured when he crashes into light pole in SLT

The man responsible for over 2,300 homes being without power on Tuesday morning in South Lake Tahoe was flown to Reno after receiving major injuries in a single car crash.

According to Lt. Brian Williams of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, the unidentified man was traveling west on Pioneer Trail just before 3:30 a.m. when, for unknown reasons, he left the roadway and hit a power pole.

The condition of the 21-year-old South Lake Tahoe man is unknown at this time. He had to be extricated from his Ford Explorer by SLT Fire Rescue.

Local man facing several charges after hit and run in South Lake Tahoe

A South Lake Tahoe man is in the El Dorado County Jail, facing several charges after an alleged hit and run accident at the corner of Sierra Blvd. and Lake Tahoe Blvd. on Saturday.

An unidentified man was crossing the street in the crosswalk at the intersection of Lake Tahoe Blvd. and Sierra Blvd. when he was struck by 66-year-old Gary J. Stanton.

Accident closes Hwy 50 at Echo Summit

A three-car accident on Highway 50 near Frog Lake on lower Echo Summit caused both lanes of the road to be closed for almost two hours Tuesday afternoon.

At 3:37 p.m., the California Highway Patrol responded to the accident which resulted in extensive damage to all three cars involved in the head-on collision. They then issued an alert to cell phones in the area, warning of the road's closure.

CHP says there were mild to moderate injuries to the cars' occupants and at least one person was transported to Barton Hospital.

As of 5:15 p.m., both lanes of traffic reopened.

Woman airlifted to Reno after Lake Tahoe boating accident

Updated Story 7/25/16:

A 22-year-old woman from Oregon is in serious condition at Renown Medical Center in Reno after having her leg caught in the propeller of a boat on Lake Tahoe Sunday afternoon. The boat with twin propellers had been pulling her on an innertube, but upon re-entering the boat the unidentified woman's legs were caught in the props.

A self proclaimed golf junkie, NBA Most Valuable Player and Golden State Warrior Steph Curry, is enjoying his return to Lake Tahoe to golf in the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe. This, his second visit to the tournament is special as he is playing with his dad, retired NBA player Dell Curry.

Three new Battalion Chiefs for South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue recently promoted three men to the position of Battalion Chief, a move that Fire Chief Jeff Meston says will improve safety for both citizens and personnel.

Jim Drennan, Tim Spencer and Karl Koeppen are all now Battalion Chiefs for the City of South Lake Tahoe. Between them, they have over 61 years of firefighting experience.

Procession for fallen firefighters from Zephyr Cove and Reno

Honor guard processions were held Wednesday for two U.S. Bureau of Land Management firefighters who died Sunday in a rollover crash. A procession was held for Will Hawkins, 22 of Reno and Jacob M. O’Malley, 27, of Zephyr Cove which began in Reno and went to Walton's Chapel of the Valley in Carson City.

The firefighters were returning to Winnemucca after looking for lightning-sparked wildfires in Northern Nevada. The vehicle crash happened near the junction of State Highway 140 and U.S. 95. A procession was held Monday for the fallen firefighters, escorted from Winnemucca to Reno.

Firefighter from Zephyr Cove dies in Northern Nevada crash

A single-vehicle crash has claimed the lives of two Bureau of Land Management (BLM) firefighters, one who is from Zephyr Cove. One other BLM firefighter was injured.

On Sunday evening, the firefighters were returning to Winnemucca after looking for lightning-sparked wildfires in Northern Nevada. NHP said tire failure may have caused the crash near the junction of State Highway 140 and U.S. 95 at about 5:00 p.m.

Virginia City fireworks start wildfire, show ends early

A fire started after embers from the Virginia City fireworks show landed in nearby brush at about 10:10 p.m., causing the show to end early.

Originally, the Storey County Sheriff reported the fire to be 4.5 acres, but the reports Tuesday morning say one acre. It is now fully contained.

The start of the fireworks show was delayed 30 minutes because of winds in the area according to the Storey County Manager. After the show had been on for 5-10 minutes, the fire started.

No injuries were reported.

Saturday crash sends one to hospital

One man was transported to Barton Hospital Saturday evening after a collision between his Kia and a van near the intersection of Black Bart Avenue and Martin Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

According to CHP Officer Shannon Samas, the driver, a man about 40-years-old, was reported to be driving in and out of his lane when he and the van collided.

No names have been released, but Samas said the male had mild to moderate injuries and was transported.

No other details are known at the time and the details of the crash are under investigation.

Endurance athlete to swim Lake Tahoe for charity

1882 pounds of illegal fireworks confiscated at Truckee "bug" station

Fire and law enforcement officers across the State are working together to confiscate illegal fireworks and get them off the street. In Placer County, an announced inspection of all vehicles going through the Truckee agricultural station netted 1,882 pounds of illegal fireworks, resulting in 20 misdemeanor citations and seven felony arrests.

In another operation, CAL FIRE joined a multi-agency fireworks seizure operation in San Bernardino County that resulted in the confiscation of 25,406 pounds of illegal fireworks, 51 misdemeanor citations issued, as well as two felony arrests.

Firefighters gain on Trailhead Fire: 50% contained, burns 5,444 acres

8:30 p.m. update 7/4/16: Firefighters working on the Trailhead Fire in El Dorado County gained a lot of ground Monday, getting a containment line around 50 percent of the fire. So far, 5,444 acres have burned.

Central California near Lake Isabella has burned 43,460 acres, destroyed 150 homes, killed two

3:00 p.m. update 6/29: Rain showers in the mountains above Bakersfield have helped fire fighters gain control of the Erskine Fire which has now consumed 46,684 acres near Lake Isabella.

The 1,743 firefighters at the scene have a containment line around 60 percent of the fire.

There are currently no evacuations in place and a re-entry plan has been established. 257 homes were destroyed with another 17 damaged.

The following are incidents the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue department responded to from June 1 to June 15, 2016.

June 1 - 11 calls: 5 EMS, 1 interfacility transfer, 1 vehicle accident no injuries, 1 police matter, 1 sprinkler activation no fire, 1 alarm activation no fire, 1 canceled en route.

June 2 - 11 calls: 7 EMS, 1 police matter, 1 vehicle accident with no injuries, 1 no incident found, 1 smoke detector activation no fire.

June 3 - 12 calls: 7 EMS, 1 unauthorized burning, 2 interfacility transfers, 1 dispatch error, 1 vehicle accident with injuries.
