South Lake Tahoe nonprofits benefit from STAR; $15,000 given away

The South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts (STAR) donated $15,000 this holiday season to three community organizations, with Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, Christmas Cheer, and Live Violence Free each receiving $5,000.

STAR is comprised of Edgewood Companies, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe, Harrah’s/Harveys Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel, Lakeside Inn and Casino, MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa, and Vail Resorts. The companies work collaboratively on community economic and sustainability issues, including a charity component.

Snowboarder identified in Thursday's accident at a Lake Tahoe resort

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) has identified David Karlin of Orangevale, California as the man who died after a snowboarding accident at Sierra-at-Tahoe Thursday.

The 23-year-old man fell at approximately 1:15 p.m. December 7 as he was snowboarding and slid at a high rate of speed down the Lower Snowshoe run and into a fence near its intersection with the Sugar N' Spice run. Sierra-at-Tahoe ski patrol called for paramedics and air support.

Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel wins guest relations award

Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel won top honors at the California Hotel & Lodging Association “Stars of the Industry” awards for their "My Tahoe" guest relations program.

The annual awards recognize lodging employees and properties that best symbolize the quality service of the industry.

The “My Tahoe” program was born back in 2013 when the property went independent as a Premier Hotel Collection member, and hotel leadership had the opportunity to reimagine guest experience.

Man severely burned after falling asleep at a Lake Tahoe resort

A man who was visiting Lake Tahoe is now in the U.C. Davis Burn Center after falling asleep in front of a fireplace and catching on fire.

Just after midnight on December 5, Tahoe Douglas Fire crews responded to the Ridge Tahoe on a call of a man burned in a fire in one of their rooms. The unidentified man fell asleep in front of a gas fireplace. He awoke to find himself on fire and called for help. Firemen extinguished the fire and the man was transported via Cal Star to the burn center. He was reported to have severe burns to just under 50 percent of his body.

Blue Ribbon Award winners announced

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE – The winners of the 10th annual Blue Ribbon Awards were announced Thursday night at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. Over 300 community members attended to celebrate the winners of seven awards that honor outstanding South Shore businesses, organizations and individuals for civic contributions, tourism experiences, customer service and entrepreneurial achievements.

Active military families treated to weekend in Lake Tahoe

The families of two active duty soldiers were treated to an outdoor adventure weekend in Lake Tahoe thanks to PatriotList.org of Carson City and Move Mountains of Incline Village.

The mission of the program was to weave family activities that blend adventure and communication workshops into the retreat weekend. The families were nurtured and challenged physically, emotionally and mentally while they worked together and thrived through fun and engaging challenges on the SEA, AIR, and LAND.

Lake Tahoe Marathon events around the lake; Some road closures

The kickoff events are now in the record books, and racers are now preparing for the rest of Lake Tahoe Marathon week to get started. Please note, State Route 89 will be closed to vehicle traffic in each direction around Emerald Bay from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 15 during the Lake Tahoe Marathon. Motorists should be aware of runners along the highway from Homewood to South Lake Tahoe.

Public workshop on US 50 / South Shore Revitalization Project

The public has another opportunity to give feedback on the design of the U.S. 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Formerly known as the Loop Road Project, this one seeks to divert Highway 50 from its current location near the intersection with Pioneer Trail and move traffic behind Raleys and the casinos, then reuniting with the current location of Highway 50 in Stateline, Nevada with a roundabout.

The Tahoe Women's Community Fund (TWCF) would like to thank all the community members who came out last Wednesday for the Modern Family Premiere in support of local families! With a fun filled evening of raffle prizes, popcorn, and good company, 150 locals raised almost $6,000 for local families. These funds will go into the 2018 grant cycle of the TWCF and will be open for any eligible non-profit to apply for.

North Lake Tahoe Resort Association gets $1.78M from Placer County

Over the next six months the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association (NLTRA) will get $1,779,495 from Placer County after the Board of Supervisors approved the contract Tuesday.

Of the contract, $1,728,262 will fund NLTRA marketing and visitor services, with $16,104 earmarked for NLTRA’s participation in regional transportation planning efforts and $33,129 for their support in developing a capital projects partnership to complete goals in the Tourism Master Plan.

New details about US 50 Revitalization Project to be unveiled Monday

Several hundred new affordable housing options will be created if the US 50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project goes in at South Lake Tahoe. Where they may be, and the release of environmental analysis documents will be announced during the next Tahoe Transportation District's (TTD) meeting on the plan Monday, April 24 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel.

Tahoe Prosperity Center CEO receives Citizen of the Year Award

South Lake Tahoe resident, and Tahoe Prosperity Center DEO Heidi Hill Drum was awarded Citizen of the Year by the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association, Chamber, Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Hill was given the honor during the 63rd annual Community Awards Banquet on April 6.

“I was very surprised and I am grateful to be recognized, but I am just the messenger," Heidi noted at the ceremony accepting the award. "Our dedicated Board of Directors and staff are just as deserving of the honor recognizing the importance of our work in the region.”

Lake Tahoe license plate program trying new ideas to spur sales

The Lake Tahoe license plate has been around for 25 years in California, one of 12 special interest plates people can choose from when registering their vehicles.

Funds collected from sales are allocated to the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) who is required to support “preservation and restoration projects in the Lake Tahoe area” and for “establishing and improving trails, pathways, and public access for nonmotorized traffic.”

World Cup skiing and Celebrity Pro-Am events at Squaw Valley this weekend

Snowboard from Connecticut dies at Northstar

A 43-year-old man died at Northstar California Resort on Thursday, February 23 after ending up in a tree well as he was snowboarding at the North Lake Tahoe resort. He was on advanced terrain at the resort, but it was not released which run he'd been snowboarding on.

The unidentified man was from New Caanan, Connecticut.

Northstar Ski Patrol initially responded to the incident and were joined by Northstar Fire Department in providing emergency care. They pronounced the man deceased at the ski area.

Northstar Mountain 20-year master plan approved by Placer County Board of Supervisors

Sierra-at-Tahoe hosts Freeride World Tour qualifying event

The Freeride World Tour is a worldwide circuit of freeride skiing and snowboarding events where athletes compete on legendary and challenging terrain at the most renowned resorts around the world. The event will take place in Huckleberry Canyon, 320 acres of backcountry terrain accessed by five gates at the summit of Sierra-at-Tahoe.

Named one of the trendiest restaurants to try by Business Insider, The Baked Bear is opening their third location in the Reno-Tahoe area in March.

Started by two friends in San Diego, The Baked Bear, which provides custom ice cream sandwiches, is quickly moving into cities in Arizona, Oklahoma, Texas, Nevada, Utah, as well as other locations in California including Petco Park, home of the Padres.

Routes revealed for two-day Amgen Women's Race in Lake Tahoe

Once again the top female cyclists will head to Lake Tahoe for the Amgen Breakaway from Heart DiseaseTM Women's Race empowered with SRAM for the start of their four-day race May 11-14, 2017. A new route was revealed today with the women racing over Luther Pass and Kingsbury Grade on the second day of their race.

The annual television meteorologist's conference, Operation Sierra Storm (OSS), couldn't have happened at a better time to bring the national spotlight to early January's storms fondly nicknamed Snowmageddon and Januburied.

Jim Cantore and Paul Goodloe, leading correspondents at The Weather Channel, both broadcast live from Heavenly Mountain Resort and showcased South Lake Tahoe’s powder-filled ski conditions for two days, eight hours each day during the historic snowfall January 10-13, 2017.

Loop Road public meeting poorly attended; Proposed debate at event nixed

In an effort to clear up misinformation about the proposed US50 Community
Revitalization/Loop Road Project, the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce (TahoeChamber) hosted a public meeting Thursday evening at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel. With the amount of negative public comments and voiced skepticism during past meetings, Measure T, and in social media, a larger group was expected than the 35 people who attended (and many of those were Tahoe Transportation and Tahoe Chamber staff).

Community advocate named Tahoe Chamber Interim CEO

Veteran community advocate Steve Teshara has accepted the position of Interim Chief Executive Officer of the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce. Chamber Board Chair Mike McLaughlin announced the Board’s appointment of Teshara in a statement released July 21.

“Our Board is extremely pleased Steve has agreed to step in to support the Chamber’s mission, membership, and community engagement while we seek a new CEO to move the organization into 2017 and beyond,” said McLaughlin. “Steve adds a unique blend of experiences and accomplishments to our dedicated Chamber staff.”

Bill Cottrill promoted to General Manager of Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel

Not quite two years after his last promotion to chief managing officer of Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel, Bill Cottrill needs another business card. Cottrill, who has been with the property for 18 years, was promoted to general manager effective June 1 by the hotel’s ownership group Premier Hotel Collection.

Cottrill’s long tenure is not unusual for the hotel that enjoys a continuously low turnover rate year after year.

Community weighs in on Lake Tahoe transportation issues

There is a balancing act needed to provide quality transportation, protect Lake Tahoe, keep clean air and meet the needs of the communities around the lake, but that is what Tahoe Transportation District is trying to accomplish with a series of pubic outreach efforts.

On Tuesday night in South Lake Tahoe, staff from the TTD, Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization (TMPO) and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) held an open house at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel to get a pulse on the feelings of the public about transportation.

Open houses held to get public input on Tahoe Transportation Plan

Lake Tahoe’s two regional bi-state agencies for transportation, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and Tahoe Transportation District (TTD), are inviting the public to attend interactive open houses this month to learn more about draft proposals to improve Tahoe’s highway corridors and share their ideas and input.

The open houses are Tuesday, May 17 at the North Tahoe Events Center in Kings Beach, and Tuesday, May 24 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel in South Lake Tahoe. Both are from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

South Lake Tahoe needs to be interesting and ready to give a total experience

There was once a time when having a beautiful lake, spectacular scenery and non-stop action and gambling was enough for the tourist to visit South Lake Tahoe and the South Shore.

This is no longer the case and the community needs to become future ready.

While change is always tough Ribaudo said, South Lake Tahoe needs to be prepared as the tourist shifts from making a transaction when coming to Tahoe to wanting an experience.
