he El Niño weather pattern that's fueling a snowy start to 2016 for the Lake Tahoe region is among the strongest on record and likely to continue bringing storms to the region.

But the long-term climate prognosis for the Sierra Nevada and the planet as a whole is more troubling with rising global temperatures threatening to make cold, snowy winters less likely in the future.

That was the message two climate scientists delivered Friday to an audience of meteorologists gathered for a conference at Lake Tahoe.

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and South Tahoe Refuse and Recycling are teaming up this holiday season to make giving to Christmas Cheer easier than ever. The LTVA’s Drive and Drop for Christmas Cheer takes place Monday, December 7 through Saturday, December 12, from 9AM-5PM. Drive through the Visitor Center parking lot at 3066 Highway 50, South Lake Tahoe, and drop your donations of food or toys into the bins provided by South Tahoe Refuse and Recycling.

The South Tahoe High Sober Grad Night Task Force would like to thank the following businesses and individuals who helped make our annual event for the graduating seniors such a success! The kids loved the evening and it couldn't have been made possible if you weren't a part of it.

The winners for the 8th annual Blue Ribbon Awards were announced Thursday night to a sold out dinner and ceremony at Montbleu Resort Casino and Spa. 300 community members attended to celebrate the winners of seven awards that honor exceptional South Shore businesses for their excellence in service, entrepreneurship, tourism and experience.

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority will be accepting applications from local nonprofits for distributions of $55,600 until Monday, October 26, 2015.

The money comes from the 26th American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament held in South Lake Tahoe in July.

The Tahoe Chamber announced the nominations Tuesday for the 2015 Blue Ribbon Awards. There were 150 nominations received from the community for their annual awards program that recognizes exceptional South Shore businesses for excellence in service, entrepreneurship and experience among other areas.

A ground breaking ceremony at Edgewood Tahoe brought out community and political leaders, all wanting the celebrate their new project, the Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe.

Rain brought the ceremony indoors, but spirits weren't dampened as people speaking at the ceremony highlighted the major impacts the new project on the state line will make on South Shore's economic and community revitalization, as well as important environmental and recreational enhancements in the area.

Hundreds of volunteers started cleaning the beaches of South Lake Tahoe after the July 4 fireworks celebration that brought an estimated 100,000-125,000 people to the area. The massive amount of trash left on the beaches in the past caused many local people, groups, agencies and businesses to help educate the public about not trashing beautiful South Lake Tahoe.

Biking and walking positively contribute to Lake Tahoe's economy, but by how much? This subject will be discussed during May's Tahoe Talks Brown Bag speaker series on May 20, 2015. This will feature a panel discussion on what is currently known about how biking and walking impact Tahoe's economy, and how we can find out more.

Lake Tahoe’s natural geography of steep climbs and long descents against postcard views will offer plenty of sites to catch race action as the top women cyclists compete in Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the Amgen Tour of California Women’s Race May 8-9.

With the start and finish line at Heavenly’s California Base Lodge, spectators will be updated with live race announcements, and entertained with high-energy music, local and Amgen Tour of California exhibitors, food and beverage.

Exciting times for South Lake Tahoe in May as the community shines on the international stage as the location of the first stage of the Amgen Tour of California. Fourteen teams consisting of 84 of the top professional women racers will be in town for the race May 8-9, 2015. The racers consist of Olympic medalists, World Champions, Tour de France competitors and other cyclists from the National and International field.

Many of the teams have already been in the area getting ready for the Lake Tahoe stop on their tour. As we get closer to May 8, more of the participants will be in town.

BMW Happy Tooth, a UCI Women's Cycling Team, will be in the Lake Tahoe area until April 5, scouting the Amgen Tour of California courses and acclimatizing to the altitude. The team will be in attendance at the annual Tahoe Chamber Business Expo and available to discuss the race, training, expectations, etc. while at the Tahoe South Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority booth.

When the women competing on the Amgen Tour of California make their two-day stop in South Lake Tahoe, hundreds of local volunteers will be there to make sure the even is successful.

The two Lake Tahoe stages cover a total of 124 miles with the first on Friday, May 8, circumnavigating the Lake; the second is two-laps through South Lake Tahoe and Meyers, Calif., the town seven miles west of South Shore on Saturday, May 9.

Television meteorologists will gather on the south shore once again during Operation Sierra Storm.

Dr. James Hansen, former Director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, and Adjunct Professor at Columbia University, will be the keynote speaker at a January 8 session that is open to the public.

The nomination period for the 2014 Blue Ribbon Awards ended on Friday, October 10 at noon. TahoeChamber’s prestigious awards program that recognizes exceptional South Shore businesses received over 175 nominations for eight separate award categories. The finalists and winners will be announced at the 7th Annual Blue Ribbon Awards dinner and ceremony on November 13 at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority would like to thank all of our community members, visitors, businesses and agencies who have helped keep our Lake Tahoe beaches clean throughout a busy summer season. Debris on Lake Tahoe’s beaches affects everyone’s enjoyment of the lake, and trash and debris on the beaches and streets can easily find its way to the lake and adversely impact lake clarity, water quality and wildlife.

Locals and visitors alike enjoy riding bike in Lake Tahoe on a daily basis, and there is now a new tool for cyclists to use: a newly updated bicycle trail map showing all of the trails on the North and South shores.

With the addition of new trails around the basin, the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition (LTBC) found it necessary to update the Lake Tahoe Bikeways Map. The newest stretch of trail from Fallen Leaf Lake to Baldwin Beach didn't make the printing deadline according to Ty Polastri, LTBC Project Director.

Attendees will vote for the booth that has their favorite flavorful creation that includes fresh ingredients that are prepared by a local chef or restaurant and then paired with regional wine, beer or spirits. The booth with the most votes will be awarded the Best Tasting Experience of 2014.
