SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Little did Nikki and Justin Foskett know that their planned grand opening of Bare Roots Artisan Coffee Roasting Company would come on the day the pandemic shut everything down.

They didn't despair though, and spent the down time roasting beans, expanding their menu and putting everything they sell online for all to enjoy. Opening a new business is always tough, exciting and stressful, but COVID-19 added a whole lot of unknowns to the picture.

Gaming revenues down across Nevada, South Shore revenues down almost 40% in July

STATELINE, Nev. - Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $756,793,269 for the month of July 2020, the second month of casinos reopening in the state after being closed due to the coronavirus. This amounts to a 26.16 percent decrease compared to July 2019, when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,024,925,615 according to the monthly report released today by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

One man dies in Lake Tahoe boating accident

UPDATE 8/11/20: A 28-year-old man from Napa, California has been identified as the person who died in a tragic boat incident off shore from South Lake Tahoe on Monday. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) Marine unit responded along with South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the U.S. Coast Guard.

When the call came in around 3:40 p.m., two men were in the water and a third was inside a rental boat. One of the men, David Castorena, had a major injury to his leg and he as not wearing a personal floatation device, or PFD.

Gaming revenues down in state as casinos start back up after closures

STATELINE, Nev. - Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $566,806,791 for the month of June 2020, the first month casinos started to reopen in the state after being closed due to the coronavirus. This amounts to a 45.55 percent decrease compared to June 2019, when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,040,978,076 according to the monthly report released today by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

NDOT adding six "no parking" signs along SR28 near Incline Village

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Roadside parking along SR28 south of Incline Village has been problematic for years. Several "no parking" areas have been created over several miles to keep cars off the road to improve safety.

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) announced Monday they will add "no parking" signs to enhance traffic safety on a section of State Route 28 in southeastern Incline Village.

Beginning July 13, NDOT will add six new “no parking” signs on the west, lakeside of State Route 28, extending from southern Lakeshore Boulevard to approximately 300 feet south.

Bike racks still available through Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition and Tahoe Fund

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - There has been a successful partnership between the Tahoe Fund and Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition in bringing bike racks to businesses and public agencies around Lake Tahoe for the past two years. They have now announced an opportunity for more low or no-cost bike racks in their "Bike Racks for Tahoe" program for centrally-located town center locations in the Tahoe Basin.

The program is designed to encourage locals and visitors to ride their bikes around lakeside communities instead of drive.

Whittell High School graduation procession along Highway 50 Friday

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - The Class of 2020 at George Whittell High School will hold its graduation on Friday, June 19. Since only immediate family members can attend the socially distancing graduation ceremony there will be a parade starting at Kahle Park on Kingsbury Grade at 10:00 a.m. The procession of cars will go along Highway 50 and end up at the Warrior Way high school in Zephyr Cove. Those wanting to cheer the graduates on may do so from along the four-mile route.

Lake Tahoe boat ramps to start opening up for boats not needing inspection

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Boat ramps around Lake Tahoe will start opening this week, but at this time only vessels with an intact Lake Tahoe inspection seal can launch and no uninspected vessels from outside the Tahoe Region will be able to get on the water.

Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra's virtual Elegant Evening a success

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many nonprofits have had to cancel their fundraisers due to the coronavirus, but the ladies of the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club in South Lake Tahoe weren't going to let the virus stop them.

Their 31t annual Elegant Evening was slated to be held at Harrah's Tahoe on April 18 with a sit-down dinner, live music, and dancing, raffle, and auction. The venue closed and restrictions on meeting in groups of over 10 people were created, so what do you do with an event that brings together 500 community members?

Move it online, of course.

End of an era: Lakeside Inn to close permanently

STATELINE, Nev. - Lakeside Inn and Casino on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe will not be reopening its doors after the coronavirus concerns are over. They were the first Lake Tahoe gaming property to close, even before Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak ordered all casinos to close in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Governor orders all Nevada casinos and non-essential businesses to close

During a Tuesday evening press conference, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak ordered a statewide closure of all nonessential businesses in the state, including casinos.

The Stateline, Nevada casinos not already closed will close March 17 at midnight. The nonessential businesses in the state must close by noon on Wednesday, March 18.

Lakeside Inn first Lake Tahoe casino to close

STATELINE, Nev. - Lakeside Inn in Stateline, Nevada became the first South Shore casino to close due to coronavirus COVID-19 concerns.

"This decision was based on concern for the health of our community and of our staff members," said Lakeside Inn President Stacy Noyes. "We decided to take the lead and help our family. It's the responsible thing to do."

All employees not working will get two weeks of pay. Noyes said the situation and decisions are evolving daily and the initial plan is to close for two weeks.

Where to watch Superbowl LIV in South Lake Tahoe

Super Bowl LIV, the 54th Super Bowl (the 50th modern-era National Football League championship game) will decide the champion for the NFL's 2019 and 100th season. The National Football Conference champion San Francisco 49ers will play against the American Football Conference champion Kansas City Chiefs.

No matter who you are rooting for, or if you just enjoy watching the game which is known for epic halftime shows and commercials (and championship football), South Lake Tahoe and Stateline are providing parties and fun spaces to do so on Sunday.

Prescribed burns to continue around Lake Tahoe, weather and snow permitting

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Weather permitting, the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT) will continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks in the Tahoe Basin. They may not be able to continue prescribed fire operations at some sites because of increased snow loads, but some units are able to continue burning.

Members of the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team, which includes local, state and federal fire and land management agencies, are scheduled to continue prescribed fire operations in the Lake Tahoe Basin over the next few weeks, weather permitting.

The 13 areas currently on the planned operations:

The old Tahoe Pines Campground near the intersection of US Hwy 50 and South Upper Truckee Rd. by the California Tahoe Conservancy. 8 acres of Machine Piles.

Upper Kinsbury, Valley Side by the Tahoe Douglas Fire District. 40 acres of Hand Piles.

LTVA a drop-off spot for toys, food and cash donations for Christmas Cheer

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority will be a drop-off point this month for the annual Christmas Cheer toy, food, and cash drive.

Until December 17 they will be receiving items at their Stateline, Nevada Visitor Center location across the highway from Lakeside Inn at 169 US50. They are open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Trash scavenger hunt with Olympian Jamie Anderson and Clean Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Clean Tahoe is hosting an event on Thursday afternoon with South Lake Tahoe native and Olympian Jamie Anderson, Don't Talk Trash - Pick It Up Scavenger Hunt.

On October 3 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., join the community at Lakeside Beach and participate in a trash pick up. Be at the beach at 3:30 p.m. to get supplies and scorecards. The fun begins at 3:50 p.m. and all have exactly one hour to clean the beach and neighborhood. Prizes will then be handed out.

No need to RSVP, just show up and have fun while helping the environment.

Five Guys Burgers & Fries opens, Chipotle on the way to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Five Guys Burgers and Fries opened their South Lake Tahoe location last week in the Bijou Marketplace at the corner of Lake Tahoe and Ski Run Boulevards. The restaurant, which now officially serves beer and wine, opened Monday, August 26, at 11:00 a.m.

This is the 57th Five Guys location to be owned and managed by Encore Restaurants, LLC, all of which are located throughout the states of California, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Massachusetts.

Community meeting on vision plan for Kahle Drive and surrounding area

South Lake Tahoe Babe Ruth thanks the community for their support

The South Lake Tahoe Babe Ruth Organization would like to thank the following community members and businesses who so graciously helped our THREE Nevada State Championship Teams (13-year olds, 14-15 year olds, and 16-18 year olds) compete at the Regional Tournament for the Pacific Southwest with their donations! Over 40 local youth benefited from this generosity by getting to play at the “next” level (one step away from the World Series)! Kudos: Community supports growing tennis program

A record 246 people participated in the 36th Tahoe Tennis Classic at Zephyr Cove Park this past weekend. The four-day annual event brought people from throughout the United States to our area for competitive and fun tennis.

The tournament is the biggest fundraiser for the Zephyr Cove Tennis Club Foundation. The nonprofit, all-volunteer organization has a contract with Douglas County to operate the six courts. Responsibilities include resurfacing the courts, managing play, and providing instruction for all ages and abilities.

Winners announced in annual Optimist Day in Paradise Duck Races

The Optimist Club of South Lake Tahoe recently held a fun and successful Day in Paradise at Tahoe Paradise Park. Part of the day's festivities were the duck races with 156 decorated business entries.

The Business Duck Best of Show went to Lukin's Water Company and they chose to donate their $100 prize money to High Sierra Softball. First runner up was Base Camp Pizza, followed by SLT Mini-Storage with both of their entries in the top four, and honorable mentions went to Soroptimists International of Tahoe Sierra and Azul Latin Kitchen.

Lakeside neighborhood road closures start at 6:00 a.m. on July 4

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lower Lakeside Park near Stateline will be closed to non-permitted and non-emergency vehicles on the 4th of July from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. in order to keep people walking in the area safe from high volumes of holiday traffic.

The popular private beach near the firework barges is accessible by Lakeside Park Association members and pass holders (may enter at 8:00 a.m.). Passes are available for purchase for $20 for the day (may enter at 9:00 a.m.). These passes do not allow parking and are for beach access only.

Douglas County creates webpage for redevelopment area at Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - The Douglas County Redevelopment Area No. 2 (RDA#2) is gaining increased interest and is the focus of an upcoming commissioner meeting so the County has created a webpage to provide the public with history, materials, information and answers to frequently asked questions.

5th annual Rock Tahoe Half Marathon this weekend; Lane closure announced

Over 1,800 runners will be participating in this weekend's 5th annual Rock Tahoe Half Marathon. The race, presented by Epic Tahoe Adventures (ETA), sends the runners past the spectacular scenery of many of Tahoe’s east and south shore treasures including Glenbrook, Logan Shoals, Cave Rock, Round Hill Pines, Nevada Beach, and Rabe Meadow. They wind down over 1,000 feet from Spooner Summit to the finish line at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe.

Santa arrives at community tree lighting at Edgewood

The inaugural Tree Lighting Celebration at Edgewood Tahoe took place on Saturday night with a packed house welcoming in the season with jolly ole' Santa Claus.

As Santa descended the grand stairs in the Lodge at Edgewood with Mrs. Santa, members of the South Tahoe Choral Association sang Christmas songs to the gathered crowd.

"For Edgewood it's about creating memories," the resort's GM Corinna Osborne said as she flipped the switch to light the tree.

Prescribed burns around Lake Tahoe set to resume

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Weather and conditions permitting, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service will continue the fall prescribed fire program with operations in D.L. Bliss State Park on the West Shore tomorrow, October 23, 2018, and in Baldwin Meadow on the south end of Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, October 24. Smoke will likely be present. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Weather and conditions permitting, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service may conduct prescribed fire operations in Sugar Pine Point State Park on the West Shore and near Twin Peaks on the South Shore beginning today, October 17, 2018. Smoke will likely be present.

A) Along lakeside of Hwy 89, north of General Creek, 17 acres of understory will be burned by California State Parks. Duration of ignition and smoke production is one week with smoke expected to travel northeast.

SLT City Council candidates respond to 100% Renewable Committee questions

On April 18, 2017 the South Lake Tahoe City Council unanimously passed a resolution to do two things: Power the South Lake Tahoe community with electricity provided from 100 percent renewable sources by 2032; and reduce community carbon emissions from baseline by at least 80 percent by 2040. The 100% Renewable Committee was formed to help the City accomplish these tasks.

It's Marathon Week in Lake Tahoe; Expect road closure October 14

Body of man missing in Lake Tahoe recovered

The body of the 33-year-old man who went missing in Lake Tahoe on September 8, 2018 was located by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office underwater remote operated vehicle (ROV) and then recovered on Monday, September 17.

Getting around South Lake Tahoe by water taxi

We've all most likely had an experience hailing or calling for a cab, but how many have tried that doing that on Lake Tahoe? There are no stop signs or stop lights, it's worry free, no traffic, no parking madness, just you and the crystal blue water underneath your water taxi as it glides from marina to marina at a steady 10 knots.

California man drowns in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of a 21-year-old California man was located in Lake Tahoe Sunday afternoon, more than 24 hours after he jumped off a boat near Edgewood Tahoe.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office cadaver dogs alerted others to the body of the man about one-quarter mile off shore between Tahoe Meadows and Lakeside Marina just before 5:00 p.m. Sunday, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Traci Trapani.

The identity of the man is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

Search continues for swimmer missing in Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Beach Bash and Homebrew for Homeless this weekend

This year they are moving the event to South Lake Tahoe and combining it with a family-friendly Tahoe Beach Bash on Saturday, July 28 from noon to 4:00 p.m. at the Tahoe Beach Retreat.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services inaugural 5k Fun Run a success

Tahoe Youth & Family Services held their inaugural Carson Valley Days 5k Walk, Jog Run on Saturday, June 9, and it was a great success with almost 100 participants. All funds raised will go to help the agency' mentoring and support programs.

It was a very windy start to the race, which was held on the Carson Valley Days parade route prior to its start. It wasn't just the weather trying hamper the race, a heavy response from law enforcement and fire fighting personnel
heading to an emergency south of the parade route caused delays for the race.

Homebrew for the Homeless event on the beach in South Lake Tahoe

1,600 runners expected for 4th annual Rock Tahoe Half Marathon in Lake Tahoe
