The Tahoe Resource Conservation District (Tahoe RCD) has hired a new District Manager, John Skeel, who officially takes over duties on July 19 at Tahoe RCD’s offices in South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
Skeel has 24 years of experience working with government organizations and not-for-profit agencies, focused primarily on community services, parks and recreation.

Douglas Boyle is Nevada's new state climatologist. He will oversee operations of the Nevada State Climate Office, a public-service department in the College of Science at the University of Nevada, Reno.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval said Monday's U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the Arizona immigration law case points out the need for Congress and the president to come together and reform the country’s immigration laws.

The Tahoe Resource Conservation District (Tahoe RCD) will hold conservation events that highlight environmental projects and stewardship opportunities in the Lake Tahoe Basin communities. These gatherings are part of the 2012 Community Watershed Partnership (CWP), a holistic program which provides a place for education, participation, and involvement in your local watershed.

Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe has named James Grant as its director of Mountain Operations. Grant was promoted from his role as director of Lift Operations. Meanwhile, Heavenly’s director of Snow Surfaces, Jim Larmore, has been named the new director of Mountain Operations at Northstar California Resort.

A coalition of local and visiting Lake Tahoe paddlers, business owners and basin environmental groups are helping to stop the spread of aquatic invasive species. Tahoe Keepers are paddlers who inspect and decontaminate their boats and gear every time they haul out and move between new waterbodies.

The upcoming Lake Tahoe Science Conference in Incline Village, Nev. will feature presentations from the Tahoe Resource Conservation District (Tahoe RCD) and its partners. Will Anderson of Tahoe RCD’s Watershed Resources Program will present on modeling of storm events, and Jim Brockett will display photographs highlighting aquatic invasive species control projects underway in Lake Tahoe by Tahoe RCD and its partners.

Bill Boosman and Paul Sciuto, both Lake Tahoe residents with backgrounds in conservation issues, were sworn in as Tahoe Resource Conservation District (Tahoe RCD) Board members at a public meeting on Tuesday in South Lake Tahoe. They join 3 existing members to complete a five-person Board of Directors.

Leadership Lake Tahoe produced a new kind of fundraiser on Ski Run Boulevard April 28 called the Unforgettable Supper Stroll and Storytellers’ Night. CARSON CITY – Two top state law enforcement positions have been filled by the Nevada Department of Public Safety (DPS).
Troy Abney was named as chief of the Nevada Highway Patrol after a national search. Abney has 28 years of law enforcement experience, including serving as the assistant chief of the California Highway Patrol where he led 786 sworn and non-sworn members.

Fifty-two years after the Olympic flame was first ignited in the Tahoe region, California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom and Nevada Lieutenant Governor Brian Krolicki announced the formation of the Lake Tahoe Winter Games Exploratory Committee (LTWGEC) today, a new joint California Nevada initiative, building on the existing efforts, dedicated to developing an Olympic Bid for the 2022 Winter Games.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval said today he will propose to extend a package of taxes now set to expire in June 2013 into the next budget to avoid further cuts to education, which he said cannot withstand further reductions.
To maintain a basically flat spending plan for the two-year budget that will begin on July 1, 2013, Sandoval said the modified business tax that was maintained at a higher rate for large businesses in the 2011 legislative session, along with a small increase in the sales tax, must be continued.

Jaycee Dugard made her first appearance at a public event since her 1991 kidnapping on Friday night, receiving an award at the United Nations in New York and praise from fellow honoree Oprah Winfrey.
Dugard, 31, was presented the Inspiration Award from fashion designer and philanthropist Diane von Furstenberg at the DVF Awards, which honor women who display leadership, strength and courage. But first she was lauded by Oprah.

South Shore native Darcie Goodman-Collins has been named the new executive director of the League to Save Lake Tahoe, officials announced today. She replaces Rochelle Nason who resigned last September.

“I’m very excited to move back to Lake Tahoe. I grew up skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and waterskiing on our beautiful lake. I am passionate about science, education, and the Lake. I will lead the League’s efforts to restore the Lake and work hand in hand with the local community to do so,” said Goodman-Collins in a news release.

The Tahoe Resource Conservation District has released a series of educational posters which identify some of the biggest threats to Lake Tahoe Basin, as well as what visitors, residents and even kids can do to help. Titled “Tahoe’s Most un-Wanted,” the first three posters feature aquatic invasive species, fine sediments from runoff and invasive weeds, and are free to pick up or request for local schools, businesses and other organizations who would like to display them publicly.
