Cool Weather Crops Presented by UCCE Master Gardeners of Amador County, Saturday, August 15th at 9:00 a.m.

Get prepared for the upcoming gardening season by participating in upcoming virtual Grow Your Own High Elevation Gardening workshops hosted by UC Davis TERC, UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe, and Slow Food Lake Tahoe.

The five free workshops will get you excited and ready to prepare for growing. They are all held from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on the dates below:

The University of California invites Tahoe-based adults interested in teaching others sustainable gardening to become a Master Gardener volunteer. You will learn University-based scientific information and then share that knowledge with others. UC Master Gardener volunteers are people of all ages and from all walks of life with a common desire to help others learn about gardening.

It’s summertime! What a great time to be out enjoying your garden. And while you are out there, have you have been considering a few changes? Maybe it could better suit your needs, or you would like to reduce maintenance. Perhaps you want a pollinator garden or to better manage pests? This gardening workshop is for you! Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe will provide you with tools and guidance to help you take that step from dreaming to doing. Free and open to all.

Join the Friends of the Library as we welcome the UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe for an informational program on preparing a garden for the winter. After an inside "how to" session, we'll all head out to the Library's new BB's Garden to have a hands on demonstration. The Friends are looking for volunteers who would like to help maintain the library's garden, so in addition to be a workshop for all who want to learn gardening techniques for our unique Tahoe environment, this afternoon is also a training session for volunteers.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It takes more than soil and seeds to make a garden, it takes nutrients and care, and in the case of the memorial garden at the South Lake Tahoe Library, it takes a love of books and the color purple.

Barbara Berezin-Kearney, affectionately known as BB, was a Literacy Specialist at South Lake Tahoe Library who spent endless hours teaching people to read at the library and jail so they could have a better future. After her passing in 2002, a memorial garden was built to remember her warm, loving and caring personality.

UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe will be holding an evening of not only culinary fun, but one with free food as they bring together the community, local produce, food and gardening.

On Thursday, April 19, the Soup Night will be held at South Lake Brewing from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Soup will be prepared by South Tahoe High School Culinary Arts Program and the bread will be prepared by Lake Tahoe Community College Culinary Arts Program.

Tahoe Friendly Garden Workshops will be hld this spring in South Lake Tahoe through a partnership of the UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe and South Tahoe Public Utility District.

They are hosting three free garden/landscape design workshops at the South Lake Tahoe Library located at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd.

Join Lake Tahoe Master Gardeners and UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) on September 25 as they delve into the tricks of the trade in growing garlic and onions in high altitude.

These varieties are specifically chosen to survive tough Tahoe winters and provide a hearty spring harvest. Topics include proper varietal selection, location in the garden or container, planting options, and methods for protecting the young plants.

The UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe are holding their Fall plant sale at Sierra House Elementary on Saturday, Sept. 9 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. They are selling over 800 native and perennial plants.

Since the sale is taking place at Sierra House, what better time than to take tours of the school's grow domes?

The students will be selling their garden art as well.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue along with multiple local agencies are coming together and hosting the 4th annual Wildfire Safety Expo on Saturday, June 17 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the TJ Maxx parking lot located at the “Y” where
Highways 50 and 89 intersect.

Everyone one is invited to the free event with lots of information about being prepared in case of a wildfire.

On May 20 at 2:00 p.m., third-generation farmer and author of “July & Winter: Growing Food in the Sierra” Gary Romano will take your questions about gardening and mountain farming at the South Lake Tahoe Library. Romano will share tips and techniques for growing food in the Sierra Nevada, including the foothills and the east slope. The talk is sponsored by the Friends of the Library in partnership with the UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe. The event is free and open to the public, and “July & Winter” will be available for purchase.

The UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe are holding a free workshop on how to plant and grow fall alliums with a focus on garlics and onions September 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Community College Demonstration Garden.

The 3rd annual Wildfire Safety Expo will be held in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, June 11 from noon to 3:00 p.m. at the TJ Maxx parking lot at the "Y" where Highways 50 and 89 meet.

The public will have a chance to learn about sustainable landscaping in Lake Tahoe at the 8th Annual Conservation Landscape Tour on August 19. The tour will begin at the Lake Tahoe Community College Demonstration Garden and continue down Pioneer Trail towards Meyers Station.

Not only are the Lake Tahoe wildflowers giving viewers a colorful experience, so are the gardens of local green thumbs.

The Lake Tahoe Master Gardeners are holding the Annual Tahoe in Bloom Garden Tour on Saturday, July 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Six beautiful gardens will be on display in the Mid-Kingsbury neighborhood.

During the tour there will also be three Tahoe-specific educational gardening talks, and Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer any questions.

The Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe, a group of volunteers trained through the UC of California, will be holding their annual June Day Jamboree and Plant Sale on June 13 at the Lake Tahoe Community College Demonstration Garden from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m.

A free, and self guided tour of various vegetable gardens in Meyers will be held on Thursday, August 21 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Staff from the Tahoe Resource Conservation District, University of California Cooperative Extension- Lake Tahoe Master Gardeners and residents will be on hand at each location to share tips, success stories and information on how you too can successfully grow vegetables in our mountain environment.

We will help make your garden maintenance much easier when you consider your specific soil type, land slope, existing vegetation, sun and wind exposure, microclimates, mulching and a lot more!
