High Elevation Garden Workshop - Grow your own garlic

Join UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe, Slow Food Lake Tahoe, and UC Davis TERC for their next virtual workshop on Tuesday, September 15 from 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. In this next Grow Your Own/High Elevation Garden Workshop, participants will learn how to grow garlic.

Those participating will receive a garlic starter plant on September 19 between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. There is a suggested donation of $5-$10 for plants. There are pick up locations in South Lake Tahoe, Truckee and Tahoe City.

Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra's virtual Elegant Evening a success

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many nonprofits have had to cancel their fundraisers due to the coronavirus, but the ladies of the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club in South Lake Tahoe weren't going to let the virus stop them.

Their 31t annual Elegant Evening was slated to be held at Harrah's Tahoe on April 18 with a sit-down dinner, live music, and dancing, raffle, and auction. The venue closed and restrictions on meeting in groups of over 10 people were created, so what do you do with an event that brings together 500 community members?

Move it online, of course.

The University of California invites Tahoe-based adults interested in teaching others sustainable gardening to become a Master Gardener volunteer. You will learn University-based scientific information and then share that knowledge with others. Master Gardeners 2019 Plant Sale

Open house and garden sale at South Lake Tahoe Library Garden

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It takes more than soil and seeds to make a garden, it takes nutrients and care, and in the case of the memorial garden at the South Lake Tahoe Library, it takes a love of books and the color purple.

Barbara Berezin-Kearney, affectionately known as BB, was a Literacy Specialist at South Lake Tahoe Library who spent endless hours teaching people to read at the library and jail so they could have a better future. After her passing in 2002, a memorial garden was built to remember her warm, loving and caring personality.

Free Soup Night to highlight local produce use at schools and restaurants

Master Gardener's workshops on growing food in Lake Tahoe

Learn how to grow vegetables in your Lake Tahoe garden this summer through a series of free workshops presented by the UCCE Master Gardeners. The classes are offered at both ends of the lake on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during May. This year's classes are potatoes, onions, raspberries, lettuce & kale, and tomatoes.

Each week will be a new theme. The workshops are all family friendly and attendees get to go home with plants for your home garden!

Big turn out for UCCE Plant Sale and Sierra House Grow Dome tours

Hundreds of plants grown under the green thumbs of UCCE Master Gardners of Lake Tahoe were sold Saturday morning during their annual plant sale.

Normally held in the spring, this year's event was moved to the fall due to a delayed start to the growing season due to the long winter we saw in the Sierra. The community apparently was ready for the sale as a long line of gardeners were already waiting when the doors opened at Sierra House Elementary.

A bonus this year were tours of the Sierra House Grow Domes as well as a Yard Art sale of the student's crafts.

The students will be selling their garden art as well.

The Lake Tahoe Master Gardeners are holding the Annual Tahoe in Bloom Garden Tour on Saturday, July 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Six beautiful gardens will be on display in the Mid-Kingsbury neighborhood.

The South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library and Lake Tahoe Master Gardeners partner up to present third-generation farmer Gary Romano, author of Why I Farm: Risking it All for Life on the Land, in a talk and book signing. Romano will speak from experience about today’s most vital issues: how to live with purpose and how to protect our food supply. He will also be taking questions about farming and gardening in the Sierra.
