There’s nothing like having a hearty and tasty meat loaf dinner to make you feel like you’re eating at home. Thanks to the “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” sponsor MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa and our hardworking Bread & Broth volunteer cooks, that is exactly what B&B’s dinner guests enjoyed at the December 28 Monday evening dinner. The meat loaf was a big hit and despite big “first servings” portions, when “second serving” was announced, many diners returned for a second helping.

"Made with Altitude" Restaurant Week in South Lake Tahoe

Foodies can rejoice in South Lake Tahoe next week as the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority (LTVA) celebrates local restaurants with Tahoe South Restaurant Week.

From January 8 through 15, diners can enjoy a special "Made With Altitude" menu at 22 restaurants.

Gourmet burgers, handmade pastas, mouthwatering steaks, fresh seafood, inventive small plates, and decadent desserts are all on the epicurean delightful menus.

Woman found on roof at Edgewood Tahoe

4:30 p.m. update 12/31/15:

The woman who was a focus of a search in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday was found by Douglas County Sheriff's Search and Rescue.

At 3:30 p.m., April Torres was located on the roof top of Edgewood Tahoe Golf Resort. She has been transported to Barton Hospital. Her medical condition is unknown.

MontBleu surveillance employees spent the day searching through their films and the last time she was seen on film was when she left the casino on foot and went to the corner of the Loop Road and Highway 50.

The investigation continues.

South Shore casinos have a good month in November; Win figure up 17%

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released their gaming revenue figures Wednesday, and revenue for casinos on the South Shore experienced the biggest gain they've seen in months.

Net revenue for local casinos is up 17.26% when compared to figures from November, 2014, leaving their fiscal year total still down. Local casinos figures are 11.38% lower than the same period last year.

In the state of Nevada, casinos as a whole experienced a net gain of 7.76%, leaving the fiscal year totals almost even with the the prior year.

South Lake Tahoe community takes care of each other during holidays

The Christmas spirit has been evident all through the South Shore over the past few weeks as many people and non-profit agencies have been blessed with donations of money, food and gifts to help make the holidays a bit brighter.

The South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge and Women of the Moose filled up 40 boxes with hams and food for families at Tahoe Valley Elementary school. The students decorated the boxes.

Kudos: Restaurants thanked for Second Serving donations

Every Friday for the last 6 years, Bread & Broth has been partnering with Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church (LTCPC) to feed the hungry through the “Second Serving” program. “Second Serving” meals consist of soup and a simple entrée such as pasta dishes, Sloppy Joes and chili cheese dogs which are served from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Family room of the LTCPC. These meals complement the Bread & Broth Monday evening full-course dinners served at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall.

Lake Tahoe's Festival of the Trees begins Wednesday

Help shape the details of South Lake Tahoe Highway 50 project

The Loop Road project in South Lake Tahoe has undergone changes, from being a federally funded project to realign Highway 50 to evolving into a community development project that promises to beautify, provide new gateways and gathering places. Without this plan being a federal project allows local control and development.

Tahoe Chamber announces nominees for Blue Ribbon Awards

The Tahoe Chamber announced the nominations Tuesday for the 2015 Blue Ribbon Awards. There were 150 nominations received from the community for their annual awards program that recognizes exceptional South Shore businesses for excellence in service, entrepreneurship and experience among other areas.

Hundreds evacuated from Montbleu due to fire Friday night

A fire in the air handling unit at Montbleu Resort in South Lake Tahoe forced the evacuation of all casino and convention center patrons on Friday evening.

According to Eric Guevin, Fire Marshal for the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, the motor of the air handling unit caught on fire, forcing smoke into the hallway between the convention center and the casino floor.

One ambulance and fire engine from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded along with four engines from Tahoe Douglas.

Riva Grill cocktail wins Barton Hospital's "Best Cocktail" contest

More than 250 people packed the Riva Grill Thursday night for Barton Foundation's 6th Annual Signature Cocktail Contest.

The winner of the event, Riva Grill's Erick Martinez, is no stranger to the podium. Attendees voted his Blue Linen “Best Cocktail.” The drink combined Tahoe Blue Vodka with lavender, mint, cucumber, and St. Germain. Martinez, who also received the most tips and was voted “Most Congenial Bartender.” Erick received “Most Congenial Bartender” in 2014 and “Best Cocktail” in 2013.

South Lake Tahoe News Briefs

MontBleu Resort on the South Shore is undergoing extensive exterior remodeling at the same time they are cleaning house.

Their ten-year-old sign came down on Tuesday and will be replaced. The driveway and hotel entrance area all being revamped.

Last week, the resort let go four directors including the Food & Beverage Director. A call was made to the property's new General Manager Tim Tretton to confirm, but his office said "no comment." Tretton has been on the job since August 4.

Local bartenders to mix up specialties for Barton fundraiser

Sample Tahoe’s newest cocktail creations at the sixth annual Signature Cocktail Contest. Hosted by the Barton Foundation, the community event will take place Wednesday, September 23 at the Riva Grill at 5:30 p.m.

Contest attendees can sample an assortment of cocktails created by Tahoe mixologists who are comprised of bartenders from local establishments, each showcase a unique concoction with Tahoe Blue Vodka and have been known to add less traditional ingredients like cotton candy or potato chips.

Tahoe Transportation District appoints Russell Nygaard as Transportation Capital Program Manager

The Tahoe Transportation District recently appointed Russ Nygaard as transportation capital program manager to oversee the planning, design and execution of the agency's capital projects.

With 26 years engineering experience in transportation and bridge projects, Nygaard will perform project management duties and assist with funding procurement and budget maintenance while ensuring all federal requirements are met and executed on schedule.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary gives out community awards

Each year the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club holds their signature fundraiser, the St. Patrick's Day Celebration, and because of this they are able to give away tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships, grants and gifts to members of the community.

On Friday, local non-profits were handed the fruits of the Rotarian's labor at their annual community donation day.

Tens of thousands headed to South Lake Tahoe

With the three-day weekend starting for many on Friday, visitors started arriving in South Lake Tahoe early Thursday. If the amount of congestion on local roads and the crowds in the grocery stores are any indication, this is going to be a very busy holiday!

An estimated 50,000 to 55,000 people will be using South Lake Tahoe hotels, motels, campgrounds, timeshares and vacation home rentals. Another 50,000-70,000 will be enjoying the fireworks from the South Shore. This includes full time residents, part time residents and drive in day visitors.

South Shore casinos have net 'win' of $16,150,457 in May

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released their May casino win/loss figures today, and casinos on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe had a net 'win' of $16,150,457 in May, down 6.76% from 2014.

The local casinos experienced a "win" of $16,150,457. This amount is down 6.76% from May of 2014.

For the fiscal year, the South Shore is up $6,184,822 over last year (the fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30).

When reviewing the whole state of Nevada, the downtown Las Vegas did the best with a 15.45% increase in gaming win. The South Lake Tahoe casinos had the biggest percentage of loss.

History Sunday: The Pony Express Rides Again

Even though it lasted just 19 months, the Pony Express played an important role in the western expansion of the United States. The Pony Express was the most direct and practical means of east-west communications prior to the telegraph.

With the threat of the Civil War there was a need for faster communication with the growing number of people living in the West. Three men understood this need (William H. Russell, William B. Waddell, and Alexander Majors) and created the Pony Express.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary awards $14,000 in scholarships

Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club recently awarded $14,000 in scholarships to students at Whittell and South Tahoe High Schools.

The Whittell High School students granted a scholarship this year for academic achievements were Subrina Trachsel, Mikayla Warner, and Bryce Bronken. The vocational scholarship went to Stephanie Martin.

At South Tahoe High School. Michael Herring and Corey McCarthy were each awarded vocational scholarship of $2,000 each.

South Lake Tahoe's Blue Ribbon Choir to join Foreigner on stage

South Lake Tahoe's Blue Ribbon Choir will be joining British-American rock icons, Foreigner, on the MontBleu stage Saturday evening.

Several month ago the band, famous for such hits as "I Want to Know What Love Is,""Feels Like the First Time," "Cold as Ice," and "Hot Blooded," contacted Dave Davis of MontBleu about their desire to have a local choir join them on stage during their South Shore show.

Davis contacted Paul Kushner, the Blue Ribbon Choir director, to see if his group would be interested.

He said "yes!"

South Shore casinos post big win in April

South Shore casinos are faring better than last year, so far.

Figures released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board today show they had a big month in April, 2015 with a gain of 56% over last year. Harrah's, Harvey's, MontBleu, Hard Rock and Lakeside had a net win of $14,520,821.

This boost brings the casinos' year-to-date figures up to a 4.21% gain over last year. So far, the casinos in Stateline have a net win $182,247,183.

Overall, the state of Nevada fared well with a gain of 5.39&.

How Leadership Lake Tahoe changed my life

Since 2003 there has been Leadership Lake Tahoe and a few hundred people can now say they've graduated from this worthwhile program. What started as an annual joint venture between the two Chambers of Commerce that served the South Shore is now a biennial leadership experience.

I was a member of Leadership Lake Tahoe in 2006 and I can say that it changed my life.

Fire at MontBleu quickly suppressed, sends two to the hospital

A large oven fire at MontBleu Resort Wednesday afternoon caused the evacuation of 200 people from the casino and sent two people to the hospital with smoke related complaints.

Just after 3 p.m., Tahoe Douglas Fire received a call about a fire at the South Shore casino. The fire department responded with a full structure fire team according to Fire Marshal Eric Guevin.

"When we got there we found significant amount of fire and smoke," Guevin told South Tahoe Now. "Casino staff had tried to extinguish the fire with three extinguishers."

Countdown to Amgen: Parking and driving impacts

Some roadways in South Lake Tahoe will have restricted parking from Thursday, May 7 at 5 p.m. through Sunday, May 10 in order to accommodate the women cyclists racing in Amgen Tour of California events being held locally.

Street parking is not allowed during these time periods in the following areas with-in the city limits:

· Pioneer Trail from the Intersection of Hwy 50 in the Stateline area to the City Limits by Black Bart Avenue
· Keller Road from Pioneer Trail to Saddle Road
· Tamarack Ave from Pioneer Trail to Blackwood Ave

South Lake Tahoe no longer a part of Hot August Nights

For the past several years, South Lake Tahoe has been a part of Hot August Nights with a few days of local show and shines, cruises and concerts prior to the big annual event in Reno.

This is no longer the case.

Without funding or a local venue to take on the "South Lake Tahoe Experience," Hot August Nights is bypassing the lake in 2015.

Top women cyclists coming to Lake Tahoe; Amgen Tour course goes through town

Exciting times for South Lake Tahoe in May as the community shines on the international stage as the location of the first stage of the Amgen Tour of California. Fourteen teams consisting of 84 of the top professional women racers will be in town for the race May 8-9, 2015. The racers consist of Olympic medalists, World Champions, Tour de France competitors and other cyclists from the National and International field.

Many of the teams have already been in the area getting ready for the Lake Tahoe stop on their tour. As we get closer to May 8, more of the participants will be in town.

South Shore casinos keep "win" figures on the positive side in February

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released their February casino win/loss figures today, and the South Shore casinos experienced a "win" of $15,575,141. This amount is up 5.66% from February of 2014.

For the fiscal year, the South Shore is up $2,934,706 over last year.

When reviewing the whole state of Nevada, the Boulder Strip did the best with a 10.59% increase in gaming win. The biggest loss when compared to last year was the Las Vegas Strip which saw a 4.38% decrease with their take of $531,348,04.

Friday's Business Expo to feature 100 local businesses

The most innovative South Shore businesses will exhibit at the 2015 Business EXPO: Innovation in the Basin on Friday, March 27. The largest business and networking event of the year, Tahoe Chamber’s Business EXPO includes 100 local businesses ranging from restaurants and resorts to recreation providers to retailers. The event includes food and drink tastings, giveaways and a new networking lounge sponsored by the City of South Lake Tahoe, Winters Construction Group and Red Carpet Events and Design.

Dancing With the Tahoe Stars ends in a tie; McDaniel wins People's Choice

The 3rd annual Dancing With the Tahoe Stars is quickly becoming a community favorite. A capacity crowd filled MontBleu Casino Resort to watch ten local celebrities paired with professional dancers vie for the mirror ball trophy.

South Lake Tahoe teacher Lisa McDaniel and Lake Tahoe Unified School Board Member Ginger Nicolay-Davis each ended up with the top honors in the first ever tie. The tiebreaker combined judge's scores, ticket donations and crowd noise.

Monthly figures released; Stateline casinos perform better in January

After dismal gaming figures were released in December, the news received on the South Shore today was much better for casino officials.

Local casinos won $15,947,548 in December, up 1.05% from December of the previous year. Year to date figures show that the combination of Harrah's Tahoe, Harvey's, MontBleu and Lakeside Inn are up 2.6^% with a gaming win of $124,107,554.

The gaming win represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

STAR donates to South Lake Tahoe non-profits this winter

The South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts (STAR) gave a total of $15,000 to three area non-profits this holiday season to feed families as well as secure essential upgrades to community centers/programs.

STAR gifted $5,000 to Christmas Cheer All Year’s Food for Families, which resulted in $11,400 worth of fresh food from Raleys supermarket. Through this initiative Raleys was able to purchase items at wholesale while selecting various items that were in more demand. For every $1 donated to Christmas Cheer results in more than $2 worth of food.

Clifford Adams of Kool & the Gang dies; Remaining members to perform at MontBleu

Clifford Adams, the trombonist for R & B band Kool & the Gang died earlier this week from liver cancer. Adams had been ill for over a year and was no longer traveling with the band. He was 62.

The remaining band members will be in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, January 17 for a 9 p.m. show at MontBleu.

Dancing With the Tahoe Stars returns to the MontBleu stage in March
