SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The ringing in of the new year was celebrated several different ways across the South Shore of Lake Tahoe.
At Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe, a season-long celebration concluded with a New Year's Eve celebration attended by an estimated 6,500 people. The festivities included a 9:00 p.m. fireworks show on the gondola, concerts and special activities all day long.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. The second night of the 9th annual SnowGlobe Music Festival in South Lake Tahoe is in the books.
From a law enforcement side, things have been fairly quiet when compared to past years. On Monday night there were 35 citations issued by the Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC), all related to minors in possession or adults furnishing alcohol to minors.
The South Lake Tahoe Police Department arrested two people for public intoxication at the event.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With no arrests made by the South Lake Tahoe Police, CHP or El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, and no medical transports, and a fewer number of phone call/email complaints, the City of South Lake Tahoe is calling the first night of the 9th annual SnowGlobe Music Festival a success.
25 minors were issued citations for alcohol issues by the Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) at SnowGlobe and they issued eight violations to businesses outside the venue.

Opinion: No Globe Alliance appreciates efforts to minimize noise impacts

The annual SnowGlobe Music Festival is fast approaching and local residents should plan accordingly. There are changes in the noise requirements and the sound will be shut off at 10:00 p.m. the first two nights and will be required to meet the averaged noise limits defined in the Bijou/Al Tahoe Community Plan for the hours after 10:00 p.m. on the final night.

The 5th annual Tahoe Film Fest presents an incredible selection of new feature films and documentaries on various topics, as well as important award-winning environmental films. Several filmmakers introduce their works. The event is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy almost thirty films and interact with other film aficionados.
All proceeds from the festival, which runs on the North Shore from December 5-8, go to support educational programs at the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center.

The South Lake Tahoe Library will host a two-night Adulting 101 series in December for those ages 15 to 25-year-old.
Each night of classes will cover the basic skills of growing up and becoming adults. In order to create an environment appropriate for teens and young adults, age limits will be enforced. The classes will be from 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Cannabis businesses not allowed under Meyers Area Plan, for now

MEYERS, Calif. - El Dorado County has opened the online availability of pre-applications and applications for commercial cannabis use permits and annual operating permits, but those wanting to operate in Meyers must wait. The Meyers Area Plan does not meet the permitted zones for the retail sales, cultivation, delivery and manufacturing licenses that will be issued.
There are a few locations in the unincorporated areas of El Dorado County on the East Slope (Lake Tahoe area) that could fit the requirements between Meyers and South Lake Tahoe and Tahoma.
Forest Order closes Taylor Creek and land around it; Rainbow Trail still open

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just as the throngs of visitors head to Taylor Creek to watch the annual salmon run up Taylor Creek, the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has issued a forest closure to last through the spawning season, October 27.
The public, including photographers, cannot enter Taylor Creek or be within 400 feet of the creek from the Fallen Leaf Dam and continuing north to the high-water mark on the shore of Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Signs highlighting suicide awareness have been placed around the campus of Lake Tahoe Community College, all in preparation for the third annual Awareness Walk: Emily's Walk for Hope on Saturday.
Walk organizer Lisa Utzig Schafer of the Suicide Prevention Network got the signs up in time for the college's new student celebration. The group is inviting the community to participate in the walk that focuses on remembering those lost to suicide and to help end the stigma surrounding suicide.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students from Sierra House Elementary have had their school days askew since a November 2018 fire forced them out of their home campus. For the last ten months, the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) site has opened the doors on the space they rent from Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) and shared with students during the school day.
BGCLT are scheduled to break ground next Spring on a new "clubhouse" that will be built next door, but in the meantime they share each room with staff and students from Sierra House.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The third annual Awareness Walk: Emily's Walk for Hope will take place on Saturday, September 21 at Lake Tahoe Community College. The Suicide Prevention Network invites the community to participate in a walk that focuses on remembering those lost to suicide and to help end the stigma surrounding suicide.
Emily’s Walk for Hope was founded in 2017 by longtime local, Susan Alessi. Susan is the mother of Emily Ann Alessi, born and raised in South Lake Tahoe who died by suicide in 2014.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After closing in May 2019 for much-needed repairs, the El Dorado County Employment Resource Center n South Lake Tahoe has reopened to the public.
Repairs completed include carpet replacement, minor mold remediation and painting.
The Employment Resource Center provides free job assistance services to El Dorado County residents who are looking for jobs or want to improve their job readiness skills. There is no income requirement to use the Center.

Review: Love Without Mercy, Sans Merci is another knockout from local Black Ice Theatre Company

There is theater, there is poetry, and then there is Sans Merci. There is sequence about one hour into the play Sans Merci, playing at the Duke Theater at Lake Tahoe Community College, that breathlessly and perfectly encapsulates the beauty of live theater, and it does so in shear silence. It is easy for a play to make you cry with dramatic dialogue. I have never had a play break me down to my core without a single word uttered on stage for several minutes as happens in Sans Merci.
Disaster averted after fires left by careless campers doused in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The outcome could have been much different had
there not been a quick response by the U.S. Forest Service-Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and other firefighting agencies at two different spots on Monday.
Both fires look like they are a result of illegal campfires, one on the northwest end of Lake Tahoe near Watson Lake and the other south of the basin in Meiss Country.

Marlin Joseph "Hersh" Herschman ~ 1943 - 2019

Hersh Herschman was never a certified tennis professional, but many of those who he instructed would say otherwise.
Born Marlin Joseph Herschman on Jan. 12, 1943, in St. Ignatius, Montana, he would always be best known as Hersh or The Hersh Man. He died Aug. 7, 2019, at The Chateau at Gardnerville in Nevada of inoperable brain cancer. His wife, Sheryl, and best friend for more than 40 years Greg Painter were with him. He was 76.
After graduating from St. Ignatius High School in Montana in 1961, Hersh joined the U.S. Army for two years. He spent two summers at West Point.
August 15 deadline for South Lake Tahoe housing survey for employers and residents

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is just over a week left to answer a few questions on the Tahoe Prosperity Center's housing survey. They have teamed up with the South Lake Tahoe Endowment and numerous government jurisdictions, agencies and partners to better understand and plan for resident and employee housing needs now and in the future to support our community and economy.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Sample the Sierra, South Lake Tahoe’s farm-to-fork festival, will celebrate its tenth anniversary of regional foods, wines, beers and spirits at Bijou Community Park in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019 from noon to 5:00 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - What do South Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada; Bend, Oregon; Bozeman, Montana; Steamboat Springs, Colorado; and Flagstaff, Arizona have in common?
They are all mountain towns who have joined together to make it easier for tourists to open their hearts and wallets in support of wild places. They have taken steps to empower travelers to help protect the outdoor places where they recreate.

The following are calls that only pertain to the South and West Shore, including Meyers, South Lake Tahoe, Meeks Bay, Tahoma, and the Echo Summit area. If you have any love for early Rock’n Roll, Rockabilly, 1950’s Country R&B, or just love good music and having fun, get online right now and buy a ticket to Million Dollar Quartet playing at the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival at Sand Harbor from now until August 25th. The Festival, which for the last few years has countered their brilliantly staged Shakespeare performances with well-timed and entertaining musical revues running in reparatory, has found progressive success with the nostalgic performances of supremely talented actor/musicians who transport the audiences back in time.
