Liberty Utilities wants customers prepared as blizzard heads to Lake Tahoe

Liberty Utilities is reminding customers to be prepared for possible extended power outages due to incoming winter storms.

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning and avalanche watch starting Thursday morning for the Sierra and Lake Tahoe areas citing that this weather pattern could be the biggest snowstorm of the season.

”Although we prepare for extreme weather impacts to our electric system, we remind customers that power outages may occur and we encourage them to be prepared,” said Travis Johnson, Liberty Utilities’ VP of Electric Operations.

Customers weigh in on Liberty Utilities in survey

The cumulative results of Liberty Utilities’ quarterly Customer Satisfaction Surveys in 2017 show improvements in corporate citizenship and communications. The survey also showed overall customer satisfaction increased by six points compared to first quarter results.

The online survey is independently conducted by JD Power, and Liberty Utilities’ results are compared with comparable electric utilities in the west. Some highlights of the 2017 survey results show:

Lake wind advisory as next storm moves into Lake Tahoe Basin

The Sierra is at average precipitation for this date, below last year's epic winter at this time, but its still early. Will a storm system heading to Lake Tahoe be enough to put those totals higher?

January storm water flows through STPUD double 4th of July, but not record breaking

Rain and snow flows during the atmospheric river storm that hit South Lake Tahoe in January created more than double the normal flow through the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD).

On a normal 4th of July, when most beds are filled in local homes and motels, STPUD sees about five million gallons go through the sewer plant, but with the large amounts of snow and rain on roads and in yards, 12.57 million gallons flowed through the plant on January 8, 2017.

With high winds and two to four feet of snow due at lake level by Monday morning, Liberty Utilities is alerting Lake Tahoe area residents to expect possible extended power outages. They are asking people to be prepared and not be caught off guard like many were during last week's storm caused outages.

Are you ready for the next Lake Tahoe snowstorm?

Long time South Lake Tahoe locals have been heard in town saying, "This is just like winter used to be." Without many serious snowstorms in the past several years, forecasts of 2-3' feet are catching many by surprise as they find themselves unprepared.

The City of South Lake Tahoe is reaching out to residents with advice to stay safe, how to be prepared, how to handle berms, and updates on the City's preparations.

Power is back on to the 136 customers in the River Road area off of SR-89 after last week's storm severely damaged power lines.

"We also want to sincerely thank those hardy customers for their patience and understanding during this multi-day outage until we could reach and repair the severe damage caused by the winter storms. At this time, most if not, all customers should have power restored," said Liberty Utilities spokesperson Kathy Carter.

Helicopters used to survey power line situation in Lake Tahoe

Liberty Utilities is continuing their restoration efforts throughout the north, west and south shores of Lake Tahoe. On Friday, helicopters helped Liberty Utilities take a look at previously inaccessible areas to survey damage to downed power poles and lines.

A helicopter is coming in from Southern California on Saturday and will drop crews and equipment into remote areas to begin restoration that is expected to take several days. Snow cats and snowmobiles will be used to get crews and equipment into Tahoe Pines tomorrow, and this is also expected to take several days.

North Shore agencies coordinate efforts to check on residents' safety

6,500 still without power after Lake Tahoe storm; Power restored to 16,300

Power is back on for 16,300 Liberty Utilities customers tonight after crews have been working nonstop to restore electricity after lines were knocked down during this week's epic blizzard.

As of 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, 6,500 locations are still being tended to.

LTCC closed for third day due to storm

Lake Tahoe Community College will be closed Wednesday January 11 due to power outages, severe weather, and continuing road condition issues.

The college wants to assure students that they will work with them to make up lost days of school, but their safety comes first.

"While we are very concerned about the loss of student learning this week, we have to be more concerned about the safety of our students, faculty, and staff," said LTCC President Kindred Murillo. "The decision maker was the City of South Lake Tahoe issuing a request for community members to stay off the roads."
