SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A new Forestry Education and Job Placement program is heading to Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) in South Lake Tahoe.

To get things started, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board awarded the college a $351,000 grant and $480,000 was received from CAL Fire’s Forest Health Grant Program. LTCC has hired Kim Carr as their contracted consultant on the project and she helped write the grants and secure funding for the new avenue of education in South Lake Tahoe. She is bringing 30 years of forestry and environmental experience to the college.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Johnson Meadow was once used as a post-Gold Rush dairy farm, became a place for summer cattle grazing, and is now being restored as part of the Upper Truckee River watershed. The Tahoe Resource Conservation District (TRCD) purchased the Johnson Meadow in 2018, a critical step in restoring the river's watershed that contains significant wildlife habitat, including river, riparian, meadow, and upland habitat areas.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The public is invited to an open house hosted by the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) on Thurdsay, February 20 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. They will be providing information and seeking public input on their annual California Department of Parks and Recreation Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Division grant applications.

The OHMVR applications request funding for trail maintenance and operation of facilities for off-highway vehicle access in the Tahoe Basin.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - If weather and conditions permit, North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, along with California State Parks are scheduled to continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks in the Tahoe Basin.

The City of South Lake Tahoe is looking for summer staff and their Parks and Recreation Department is holding a job fair on Wednesday, April 3 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Last year's job fair was very successful and many positions were filled and they plan again to fill many positions at the fair.

The job fair is held at the Recreation Center located at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is seeking public comments for the annual California Department of Parks and Recreation, Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Division grant application. The OHMVR application requests funding for trail maintenance, and operation of facilities for off-highway vehicle (OHV) access in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The 60-day grant application comment period ends Monday, May 6.

SOUTH LAKE THAOE, Caif. - What does the future Bijou Community Park look like? Will it expand, offer different recreational opportunities or does it remain the same?

The City of South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Commissioners and City staff will host a public workshop at Bijou Community Park on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to obtain feedback from community members on opportunities to expand and create access to outdoor recreation.

The workshop is going to be "fun and interactive," according to organizers and will also include refreshments.

There are just two days left for the public to comment on a proposed restoration project of the Upper Truckee River that runs adjacent to the Lake Tahoe Golf Course and Washoe Meadows State Park.

We are a diverse group of local South Lake Tahoe residents who are organizing to eliminate or relocate SnowGlobe. This event has unfairly displaced local residents, invaded our homes with noise, closed access to whole neighborhoods, exposed our forests to unnecessary and dangerous potential for fire and attracted visitors who do not reflect the family friendly Lake Tahoe we want to be. We want to bring the experiences of our local community into the light.

The Foundation for Carson City Parks & Recreation (FCCPR), is hosting an Open House at the historic Wungnema House located in Mills Park, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 27, 2017. Admission to the open house is free. This will be an opportunity to learn about this historic building and about the Foundation.

LAKE TAHOE - The California Tahoe Conservancy Board today authorized $414,074 to the California Department of Parks and Recreation for projects that improve forest health and reduce the risk of wildfire at Tahoe State Recreation Area and Ed Z’Berg Sugar Pine Point State Park. The funding is the first allocation of more than $6.8 million in Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act funds awarded to the Conservancy at last year’s Presidential Summit.

Forests, beaches and trails may first come to mind when picturing California’s State Parks – but California State Department of Parks and Recreation (State Parks) is also the steward of hundreds of historic buildings and bridges. Truckee-based Linchpin Structural Engineering, Inc. (Linchpin) is now assisting to preserve them.

It’s been great seeing all of my friends and acquaintances who have lived here for less than 10 years posting photos and sharing how Snowmageddon 2017 has blown them away. I did the same when I first moved to Tahoe back in the 70’s and storms like this were not uncommon. Back then playing was more important than clearing the snow. I had a big Dodge Ram 4x4 pickup and I j drove over the snow in my driveway and packed it down. I did not own a snowblower and can’t remember shoveling much. One year the packed snow was so high I could not get the truck under the carport.

The Incredible Kids Program in Douglas County provides youth with gym membership scholarships, and thanks to a donation by Intero Real Estate Services of Gardnerville, Nev., many more will be able to use the service.

The real estate group presented a check in the amount of $8,200 to the fund representatives, Renea Louie, Scott Morgan and Drew Aguilar of Douglas County Community Services Foundation, along with Douglas County Community Services/Parks and Recreation staff accepted the donation.

With a record number of local residents recently vying for two open City Council positions, many are hoping there is a renewed interest in filling vacancies on four city commission and board spots as well.

The City of South Lake Tahoe is looking for residents to fill 19 city commission and board positions on the Planning Commission, Recreation Commission, Airport Land Use Commission and the Building/ADA Board of Appeals. Applications are being accepted until the deadline of December 2, 2016.

PLANNING COMMISSION:

On November 8, voters in South Lake Tahoe are tasked with selecting not only local and national leadership, but they are also faced with raising taxes. Measure P is on the ballot, but it is very different than other taxes, and let me explain why.

The Bijou Bike Park Association was recognized during Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting with a proclamation honoring their successful creation of the bike park on Al Tahoe Blvd.

"I didn't know this was going to be so successful so quickly," said Amy Fish, an active member of the association. "Our kids can now ride side by side with world class GoPro cyclists at the park."

Amy accepted the award for her husband Ben who was out of town on business. He is the President of both Bijou Bike Park and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Associations

Lake Tahoe Community College was one of two colleges in the state to win national recognition from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for the team’s exemplary 2015/16 budget.

All boys and girls ages 5 to 13 are invited to participate in the Junior Giants program in South Lake Tahoe this summer.

The City of South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department has partnered with the Junior Giants Organization to bring this free program to South Lake Tahoe youth.

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department installed Automated External Defibrillators (AED) in all city staffed buildings this week including the airport, Parks and Recreation Swim Complex, Motor Pool, Senior Center, Transit Center, Services Center and at the Police Department.

Regan Beach in South Lake Tahoe has run down restrooms, failing retaining walls and is not ADA compliant in many spots. Improvements at the park and beach are part of the recently completed Parks and Recreation Master Plan, and the City wants to know what the community would like to see here.
